ESPN: Louis Nix, to take a look at Michigan....

Submitted by GoBlue-ATL on
Hurricanes commit Louis Nix to visit Notre Dame, consider other schools Under Armour All-American defensive tackle Louis Nix (Jacksonville, Fla./Raines) told ESPN affiliate Web site IrishSportsDaily.com that he will be in South Bend, Ind. on Sept. 19th for the Irish's matchup with Michigan State. The 6-foot-3, 318-pound Miami soft verbal will also consider Florida, Florida State and Michigan. The No. 101-rated player in the ESPNU 150 tallied 50 tackles and 10 sacks during his junior campaign. Sounds like he would be a great addition to the class. Snake Oil time for sure. ESPN also pointed out that it is looking good for Christian and Ifill as well.

Bring on the defensive commits! Can't get enough DT's and DB's right now. I feel pretty comfortable with the recruiting of the DB's for the class, it seems like we have a lot of realistic options. DT is looking pretty thin though...

Not sure where espn is pulling this out of but if he comes north it will only be for ND and even with an official visit it isn't be likely

"It's like having only 3 scholarship QBs on your roster." Okay, let's use that as an example. We have Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson on the team and then Devin Gardner committed. Would you say 'We need Cornelius Jones to play as a freshman'? No, because there are three scholarship quarterbacks ahead of him. Let's say Jones decommits and we only have Forcier, Robinson, and Gardner in the fold. Would you say 'We need Braxton Miller to play as a freshman'? A freshman DT - regardless of who he is - is probably not going to play much, if at all, in 2010. He'll be behind a 2-year starter (Mike Martin), a former 5-star behemoth (Will Campbell), and Renaldo Sagesse, who will be a senior and has contributed for the past couple years. Also, we don't run a 3-3-5.

We will also have a fifth year senior Sheridan as #4 QB, and the analogy isn't quite perfect because you typically shuttle your D linemen a lot more than your quarterback, which means that you need more depth. I assume that Sagesse, Martin, and Campbell were already planning on getting significant playing time this year. I presume that all three guys will get into every game. If that's the case, then that means there is essentially no reserve on the roster, unless you count converting a defensive end. If Michigan fails to land a DT this year, then that means we will operate with only three DTs two years in a row. Ideally, a guy taken this year could redshirt next year if everyone is healthy, but if he is a "project" type guy that is forced into service before he is ready, that position will function a lot like our offensive line last year. It's hard to not look at the depth chart for this position and not get a little nervous. Anyways, I really hope that we land this guy or Floyd.

We don't need a guy who can play as a true freshman. When the Class of 2010 enters, Martin will be a junior, Sagesse will be a senior, and Campbell will be a sophomore. That's not to mention guys like Patterson and Banks, who could play DT in goal-line situations. If a 2010 recruit gets snaps at DT, they'll be very minimal.

RRod likes to bring in fresh legs and rotate players throughout the game, hence, the reason we need the depth and also why two superstars can shine at the same position (sans QB).
