Doom and Gloomers, Don't rush to judge O'korn

Submitted by Hard-Baughlls on

I know we all want Speight to to play as he gives us the best shot of winning in C-bus next week, but stop burying O'korn based on that game.  The weather was absolute shit in just his first start ant it's not as if Barret was lighting it up in similar conditions in East Lansing.

Of course Barret is a much bigger threat to run, but he is also a 3rd year starter that looked very average yesterday against a mediocre team.  Sure, we're not sending Joe Montana or Tom Brady out there next week, but neither are they.

If we win the battle on both lines of scrimmage we will win the game.  Not much separating these two stat lines from this past weekend for the two teams.

Speight beat out O'Korn for starting QB. Speight is better.  I do not believe Barret is a great thrower. He is a dangerous runner. He can carry their offense. I don't feel O'Korn can carry UM's offense. These are just my opinions.

To me it makes no different who starts.....If the defense plays great we have a real shot to win..O'korn will be alright..at least he beat Indiana and the last game Speight played he was pretty bad himself...losing to Iowa of all teams..Thus the trolling from NDSU...I love how so many people give us no chance at all...like people gave Iowa no chance...Michigan will win this game..

but the O has absolutely sucked the past 2 weeks and it's certainly not all on OKorn.

It's very similar to when we lost David Molk a few years ago . . . but this time there's no missing Molk to explain the collapse.

WTF?

Barrett has played many, many much better games this year, and has clearly shown that yesterday was a low outlier. O'Korn has not. Barrett has had only two poor passing games this season, and in both of those, he ran for over 100 yards. I know you and a lot of other posters are desperately trying to convince yourselves that we have a good chance to win with O'Korn starting, but we really don't. It will take a lot of luck, and bad play by OSU, of the kind that just doesn't happen against us. Ask yourself, when was the last time OSU played a bad game against Michigan, and let us win when we shouldn't have? Exactly.

"many, many, much better games"?

Some, somewhat better games.

Oh, we are the underdog for sure.  But you can't say we don't have a chance.  After all, MSU came close to upsetting OSU yesterday, and we are a much better team than MSU.

"It was the weather" sounds like something you would say if he threw for 170 yards but when you throw for 50 some yards on only an ok defense I don't think it's the weather. Lagow looked much better and isn't an all star qb. If he plays next week, we might not break 20 yards passing and run  into stacked boxes all day.

and most of his passing was on that screen pass on the first drive. Let's be honest. It looked like Russell Bellomy or Nick Sheridan. Maybe our defense can shut them down but I feel better about scoring the points we'll need to win with Speight than O Korn.

The one thing that I'm using to inspire hope for this week is that Harbaugh did prove he can punch the bully in the face.  He beat USC with a Stanford team that was still being rebuilt.   That was a talented USC team too, before they fell off a bit in the last few seasons.

Though I fear he was aided by USC not being fully focused on Stanford as it  wasn't a threat yet.

Okorn won't beat osu unless there is some sort of superman offensive play calling performance. The defense will keep us in it but we're going to have to score and throw the ball. We need explosive plays on Saturday to win, it could happen but okorn is going to have to be A HELLUVA lot better against a way better team than IU.

I don't think it was holding back, but it was obvious Michigan did a lot less in terms of formations and shifts and personnel packages last Saturday because Harbaugh wanted to make things as basic as he could for O'Korn, to eliminate the possibilities of of frustrating errors, focus, and get some confidence. Obviously the weather limited things quite a bit as well in the passing game.

He's been doing a lot more in practice, and if JOKdoes start this week, I would imagine much more of the playbook.

Runniing the ball, OSU is a slightly better bet (since JTB can run, and M's LBers are not where they need to be yet). Both have great defenses will gear up to stop the run and pressure the QB.

Both teams have passers that are really accurate some days; not so on others. A healthy Speight > Barret > O'Korn in that regard, but it all depends on who is having a better day handling the pressure and accuracy passing the ball. Both teams have excellent secondaries.

Going into this season I didn't think the offense was going to win the OSU game and I still think that. It was always about the defense. This will be the best defense OSU has faced all year. If they show up to play and Brown dials up a game plan to limit their gains on the edge, the offense will just need to not give the game away with dumb mistakes and we'll have a legitimate shot.

I also think you shoot Speight up, wrap him up, tape it up and do whatever you have to to get him on the field. We can be a damn good offense with him. O'Korn, on the other hand, was just hot garbage IMO. I'm sorry but he reminded me of really bad video game players who run backwards and throw off their back foot. He seemed totally spooked and bailed on plays prematurely. If he starts, we lose. I hope I'm wrong, but the problems he showed aren't weather related. On the flip side, if they run JT as much as they have been he could also be in trouble. I think we should smash JT on the read option every time regardless of who carries it. We should just zero in in the only real weapon they have outside of Samuel.

Ghost of Fritz…

simple than all of the banter suggests.

Harbaugh's offense works well only if M is able to hit several downfield passes.  Compare, for example, 1st half against MSU against the IU game.

If M cannot connect on at least 4 long/longish balls against OSU (preferably in the first half), then the offense will sputter and the win probability goes sharply in the wrong direction.  Running and even short passing alone are not really what make the Harbaugh offense work..

Speight has been able to hit several long passes in most games this season--except against Iowa.  And we all know the result.

We know Speight can do this.  O'Korn did not show that he can do it against IU.

If O'Korn starts OSU will stack the box, blitz, etc,,and make Michigan win through the air.  A fully health 'good' Speight would make them pay.  If O'Korn cannot make them pay, then...

With a fully health 'good' Speight, Michigan should be a decided favorite.

With O'Korn?  Michigan wins only if O'Korn hits several long passes (plus does decent on  short and medium passes and stops running backwards to avoid the rush).

I'm not a doom and gloomer, but I feel without Speight the battle is definitely uphill.  That said, this analysis removes a HUGE state line that you can't just overlook to make a point.  Barrett ran for 105 yards on 24 carries.  Mike Weber ran for 111 on 14.  O'Korn ran for 19 on 6 carries (loss adjusted) and Smith ran for 158 on 23.  O'Korn is supposed to be mobile and has experience, yet his arm was bad and his running wasn't much better.  Barrett isn't exactly setting the world on fire with his arm, but he can definitely set you on fire with his legs.

Is John O'Korn that much worse than Tyler O'Connor, especialy now that John has a full game under his belt? Answer, no. Tyler is inaccuate, INT-prone, and not much of a running threat. But Sparty came close to an upset win. OK, John O'Korn's performace Saturday might not inspire comparisons to Chad Henne, but John didn't turn the ball over and it turns out he's got a little giddyup in his gait. A running threat? Well yeah, sorta.

M's Defense we don't worry about. It appears everyone came out of the IU game healthy, and they will give the Buckeyes all they want. Drevno and company will design a package that John is comfortable with, and M will give it its best shot, which is all anyone can ask. Go Blue.

Sorry but with O'Korn panicking more often than not *at home against Indiana* and just noticing Harbaugh's reaction to his performance, I don't see how we can win unless Speight is in. We may need 40 points to win just like last year. Although Speight didn't do well against Iowa, he has the capability. I just don't see that in O'Korn.I'm not laying into a college kid, just stating my opinion.

Offenses. If the QBs don't turn it over and the oline can protect and open some running lanes, the game is a toss up. If our QB play is poor and we can't run the ball, it will be a long day.

And the game plan. Harbaugh and Co. Know more about the players and what works best. I'm sure Harbaugh wants nothing more than to win this game. That is enough for me. GO BLUE! BEST OHIO STATE!
