Regardless of the (bullshit) spot, they should've measured.

Go look at the screen capture of the video they used for the review during the game. Body and arm in the above photo is at the point of most forward progress.

Harbaugh said he thought it was about 8" short. This looks about 6" if this is infact the furthest point forward it got. I'd say that's a pretty damn close estimate.

When the ball is placed in OT or for a touchback, is the middle of the ball placed on the 25, or the nose of the ball? Either way, I think it is definitely short based on this pic.

I feel like this game is going to go down with Desmond's trip, clockgate, and Charles White's fumble in Michigan lore.

15 yd line is the stick, since you start on the 25... no need to measure it -- it either got to the 15 or it didn't.
November 27th, 2016 at 3:52 PM ^
There's already a line at the 15 so they didn't need the chains.

They started at the 25 so there was no need.

If both sides are able to provide angles, and pictures that support their argument... Then the call is disputable both ways, and without indisputable evidence either way the play must stand as call. If this play was reversed, and the refs called it a first down for Michigan and let the call stand, we would be using the exact same angles as Ohio State fans right now.
Instead, the defense should have tackled Curtis Samuel as he scrambled for what seemed like 5 hours in the backfield on the previous play.

That "overhead" picture they keep posting is one of the originial photos rotated. Look at how the hash marks are diagonal.

So what is the exact rule here? Is he down when
1) his hand touches the ground
2) his hand touches the ground and a defender is touching him
3) forward progress is deemed to have stopped
3) the whistle blows
4) forward progress is stopped AND the whistle blows
5) something else
Please clarify.

So the contention (fact) then is that he never made the line of gain and the whistle ended the play. Correct? If so, it would be interesting (albeit moot since he never got to the first down marker) to hear the audio of this to determine when the play was dead.
