This Day in Harbaugh Trivia: Harbaugh Will be Facing a QB in 2015 He Recruited at Stanford

Submitted by alum96 on

Trying to sleep.  Failing.  Too excited.

Decided to look over Harbaugh's four Stanford recruiting classes to see how they shook out, how they progressed in quality over time, how many players I recognized and the like... and as I skimmed his 2009 class one three star, Idaho QB stood out like a sore thumb.

Taysom Hill

If you are not a general college fan who watches games all day Saturday like some of us addicts, you may not know who he is and even more so you may be asking how could a guy from a class in 2009 ago still be in college?  Well he is a Mormon.  Who went on a mission.  And transferred to ... BYU.

Who UM just so happens to plays in the 4th game next year.

Not only that, this guy is sort of a dark horse Heisman candidate (not a guy who would win but a guy who could finish top 10) who was rolling up some nice #s at BYU this past year before getting hurt.  More interesting - it tells you the type of QBs Jim likes.  We knew he liked mobile passers (i.e. Troy Smith types) but this is the more of a true dual threat QB.  (i.e. Russell Wilson) He basically will throw for 200 yards a game/run for 100 yards.

He is going to be 25 years old when he rolls in here next fall!

Small frigging world.

Hill was a star quarterback out of Highland High in Pocatello when he signed a national letter of intent with Stanford, and then-coach Jim Harbaugh, in February 2009. That was before Hill experienced a change of heart and signed a scholarship agreement with BYU in April 2011.

"There were a few things that transpired while I was in the mission field," Hill recalled this week. "One of which being coach Harbaugh going to the San Francisco 49ers. Then they also didn't allow incoming freshmen to come until June or August because of the academics at Stanford. At that point, I began to question a few things and see what else was available to me."

Stanford's coaching staff wanted Hill to come home five months early from his mission so he could be on the Cardinal team for the 2011 season, he said. But Hill didn't want to do that, meaning he would have to wait to begin classes at Stanford until June 2012. Eventually, Hill chose BYU, which allows incoming freshmen to enroll in January.

Unrelated but Jim took 2 QBs in three of his four Stanford classes which I love. Most important position in sports and limiting each class to 1 puts you more in a hit or miss situation. A larger pool = more chance of hitting a home run or at least a triple.

Taysom Hill is the kind of QB that Michigan has always struggled to defend.  He isn't Denard fast, but he is really fast and doesn't mind a little impact if he needs an extra yard or two.  BYU is a very good team when Hill is at the helm.  If he has fully healed and doesn't reinjure himself, it could be a long day.

Hopefully, JH figures out a way to neutralize him.

Yep, which is why Russell Wilson is so effective.  This is the most difficult type of QB to defend - you think you have a play covered on 3rd and 7 and guy scrambles for 8, causing exasperation all day.  One could say JT Barnett is that type of QB although Barnett is probably a better passer and less of a runner than Taysom.  Golson is another of this type but he didnt even have to bother to run vs us since he strifed us thru the air so badly.

Our OOC is pretty damn difficult next year - both Utah and BYU pose all sorts of risks.  Our "2nd easiest" OOC is vs a Pac 12 team.  UNLV is the only gimmee.

i always think its a little silly how people love to say how michigan struggles with running QB's.

this isnt a problem unique to michigan. have you seen the numbers these types of QBs put up? everyone struggles with them. thats why it has become so common to see these types of passers. guys who can threaten the defense in multiple ways. its tough to defend.

The '98 Syracuse game where Donavan McNabb ripped us apart. Or the friggen1978 Rose Bowl (& Moon was basically a pocket passer even in those days but whenever he got out of the pocket in that game...chaos!) Don't forget that Harbaugh was occasionally an option QB at Michigan, too.
