CFB Committee rankings out Tuesday....your thoughts?

Submitted by ChicagoB1GRed on

With the Committee's 1st rankings due out on Tuesday, thought it would be good to hear everyone's opinion on where the various teams will land.

I think the AP/Coaches/Sagarin/etc  polls are completely irrelevant in today's CFB world....neither the Committee nor the Bowls care. Tuesday's rankings are the only ones that matter, or ever will matter in the new system.

I'm going to predict B1G teams a little higher across the board than the current polls.

I  think the SEC won't get as much love from the Committee as the polls and general sports media give.

It will QUITE interesting to see if the Committee has significant major differences from "the conventional wisdom".

Especially since this will be probably the only "poll" in history of CFB where some actual thought and looking under the hood went into ranking the teams.

I hope neither get a sniff at the final four... as for the rest of teams, I'll sit back and really enjoy the games with no emotional attachment.

The current AP poll has it right. No complaints there. Still way too much football to be played for coaches to politic.

KSU over TCU? yeah..... no.

Here's mine currently:

1. MSU (NTMSU)

2. FSU (I think they lose to Louisville Thursday)

3. Oregon

4. TCU

Bama beats a bad Tennessee team and is suddenly in the Top 4? Wtf, cmon.

MSU will win the Egg Bowl. Ole Miss knocks off Auburn. Bama gets knocked off by Auburn.

ASU knocks off ND, and if FSU loses to Louisville then MSU (YTMSU) sneaks in at 4.

There ya have it!

I don't think their offense compensates for the defense, so I wouldn't have them in my top 4 right now.  But, I probably would include them in a top 4 of who I think will finish in the 4 at the end.  I think I'd have Miss St., Alabama, Auburn and Florida State if the season were to end today, but obviously, the first three have a couple losses coming.

KSU will lose at TCU

MSU will beat OSU, who I thought even looked worse than MSU this weekend.

I'm gonna chalk up Oregon's defensive woes as the PAC12 just having loaded offenses. That defense did pretty well against MSU.

We'll obviously state and Osu winner could get in, although I think both are overrated and wouldn't do well in final four, in fact whoever wins in two weeks could end up losing a game later anyway. I'd say the final four will be: FSU, Oregon, ND, SEC winner.

Tough to tell what will happen with Miss St, Bama, and Auburn beating each other up in the next few weeks.  I'm going to guess the top 2 SEC teams get in, with FSU and maybe ND or Oregon.

it's pretty hard to make a case that michigan state has a better resume than notre dame. i think notre dame will open up ahead of any big ten team.

but it would be stupid to ignore the fact that the sec is better conference and leave 3 of the best 4 teams out of the football playoffs. i feel like this is something they should have written into the rules so it isn't subjective. they should have had a meeting with all the commissioners and hashed it out, rather than leave us waiting to see how they handle it.

Neither of these teams resume's is that impressive right now.  They've both lost to the best team that they've played.  Neither has many wins over teams with a winning record - ND has 2 and MSU has 1.  The one thing MSU has going for it is the victory over Nebraska.  At the end of the year Nebraska could be a 10-2 or 11-1 team ranked near the Top 10.

might be a lot of chaos coming up.

All the matchiups, and who travels where, look to give the edge to Florida State (assuming they beat Louisville on the road Thursday), Oregon (who has to beat Stanford kryptonite and possibly Rich RodZona in the Pac 12 title game), Bama (who gets Mississippi State and Auburn at home), and perhaps the Mississippi State/Ole Miss winner if that is their only loss.

I think the SEC title game could really throw a wrench into everything.  What if the teams from the West each have 2 to 3 losses, which is possible given that Miss. St. stills goes to Bama and Ole Miss, Bama goes to LSU and hosts Miss. St. and Auburn.  Auburn goes to Ole Miss, Bama, and Georgia.  Ole Miss hosts Auburn and Miss. St.  And now say that 2-3 loss team from the West beats a 1-loss Georgia 28-24 in the SEC title game.  Do both make it?  Only the champ?  Neither if its a 3-loss team?

Well, ESPN's current playoff picture goes with the following:

- Mississippi State

- Florida State

- Alabama

- Auburn

...and the first three below that being:

- Oregon

- Notre Dame

- Ole Miss

I suppose I could buy the top four if the selection were made strictly on the few rankings that ESPN is going from. The committee, of course, supposedly can use whatever it sees fit in the end. This could be fun in that respect.

Some teams that could make noise not currently in the top 8 or so.  Keep in mind Missouri, MSU, Auburn etc the past few years have come from way in the pack to get into the top 5ish late in the year.

PAC 12

Everyone is talking about Oregon coming out of the Pac 12 but there are 3 teams in the Pac 12 South who also have 1 loss.  Like the SEC West, they will beat up on each other but if one of those 3 exit the Pac 12 south without another loss AND beat Oregon they should be in the playoff.  Their resume will be 2nd best  IMO (that division has USC, UCLA, Utah, ASU, Arizona - 5 teams in the top 25ish)

  • Utah - loss to Washington State (by 1), not a good loss but a close one. Upcoming games Oregon, Stanford, Arizona State, Arizona.  They could fall fast with that schedule but in theory if they win all 4 AND then beat Oregon in a rematch in the Pac 12 championship game they are a shoo in.
  • Arizona - loss to USC by 2, should have won if had a good FG kicker.  Not a bad loss at all.  Upcoming games UCLA, Utah, Arizona State, Washington.  Has already scalped Oregon.  Doing it twice would be a real statement if they can somehow win the rest.
  • Arizona State - loss to UCLA, wasnt a good loss but an ok name to lose to. Upcoming Utah, Notre Dame, Arizona.  Already taken care of Stanford, USC.  Again finish the sweep and beat Oregon in the Pac 12 championship game not only did you win a big non conf v ND but you have a bevy of quality wins.

In the Big 10, everyone is speaking about OSU and MSU and while Nebraska doesnt pass the smell test they in theory just need to win out (Wisconsin is the last major challenge), and go beat the OSU/MSU winner.  They match up better with OSU IMO as Sparty kills run offenses.  But in theory they would be a contender.   Only loss would be MSU.

MSU if they win out, only loss would be Oregon,

OSU if they win out, loss would be a bad one to VaTech which of all the teams above is probably the worst loss by a mile other than Utah's.

So that is a group of 6 teams on the outside looking in but could make a big run.  The Big 12 also has TCU and KSU who face each other soon and both who have quality losses - Baylor and Auburn.  If one of those 2 win out (no championship game) it will probably be a decision between them and MSU if MSU wins out for the 4th spot.  Unless Oregon loses their championship game and then I think both KSU/TCU and MSU (assuming all win out) gets the Pac 12 spot.

Still a long way to go and like someone else said I don't get doing this, this week.  I'd probably wait 2 more weeks but I get for media hype its a way to go.

I think a B1G team has a fair shot of getting in by the end of the year.  All the love for the SEC will erode as the season progresses.

Alabama still has to play Miss St.

Ole Miss plays Miss St.

Auburn plays Ole Miss

Georgia plays Auburn

LSU plays Alabama

Auburn plays Alabama

and then there is the SEC Championship.   The SEC will canibalize itself.  The question is whether or not ND jumps the B1G team considering they don't have a Championship Game.

Also, the money in Vegas is giving MSU the best odds of winning the Championship.  The money people are leaning that way for a reason.  Someone has done the math and determined that if MSU wins out, they are probably in.  We'll see!

Miss St

FSU

Oregon

Alabama

Based on games so far, I think it should be:

Miss St

Auburn

FSU

Ole Miss.

Cmte will never pick three SEC teams, even though I think the top 4 SEC west teams would beat just about everybody else in the country on a neutral field.

I suspect it will basically be the top 4 in the polls, maybe with a team like Oregon or KSU taking out Alabama.  MSU is on the outside looking in, and OSU is behind them.
