CC: Vegas odds Harbaugh to UM Was 8-1 Now 2-1
I don't know much about sports betting, but that's a huge jump. What does that tell you people who know about sports betting?
Jim Harbaugh 2015 Coaching odds suspended after a stream of bets on Michigan moved them from 8-1 to 2-1 yesterday afternoon

you could always not be lazy and actually post the gif. Just a thought. Otherwise, its kinda stupid

Just a dumb fucking thought. Just a thought though.

That Vegas, as always sets its lines and attempts to control them in such a manner that they make money, not because they want to accurately predict the future with them.

That's what happens when people put money where their mouths are.

Or putting money where their bills are. Interestingly enough...

Money is the most honest language people have. Unlike weightless words, money is important to (nearly) everyone, and dollars can't be taken back if they're wrong.
December 6th, 2014 at 3:19 PM ^
nice quote
December 6th, 2014 at 6:04 PM ^
Actually, dollars can be taken back.
Words spoken stay spoken.
December 6th, 2014 at 4:34 PM ^
"And yet Vegas seems to generally be the most accurate predictor. Funny how that happens."
Uhh...no, that's not how it works. Vegas doesn't make any predictions. The set lines, odds, spreads, etc. that allow other people to place bets based on those people's predictions.
December 6th, 2014 at 7:40 PM ^
If the spread moves too far one way or the other -- as measured by the sentiment of gamblers -- the spread will be adjusted as money flows in. The Las Vegas spread is the best predictor of the outcome. That doesn't mean it's necessary a great predictor, or even a good one. But it's the best one.

But that big of a jump that quickly could be a combo of evening out the money, and some new info. Who knows (Vegas knows).
edit: caveat is if Floyd Mayweather is getting in on the action that could be enough to move the line on its own.
December 6th, 2014 at 1:05 PM ^
The real story here is what made them change? What do they know that we don't know?

That's a big jump.

A lot of money was bet on Harbaugh to Mich. so Vegas adjusted the line.It doesn't mean 'he's coming' rather it means a lot of people think he's coming and have put their money where their mouth is so to speak.
December 6th, 2014 at 1:13 PM ^
"a lot of people think he's coming" means the overall rumor mill of insiders has indicated he will probably come
December 6th, 2014 at 1:24 PM ^
December 6th, 2014 at 4:33 PM ^
because the money kept coming in on Harbaugh even after a radical change. Usually that means something beyond idle speculation.
December 6th, 2014 at 1:06 PM ^
that kind of jump makes me think they know something. That's a bit silly for bets alone to change that.
December 6th, 2014 at 1:08 PM ^
It says in the OP why the line was moved. This is another example of people reading the headline and dismissing the content beneath it.
December 6th, 2014 at 1:11 PM ^
That's a pretty epic jump; people must be making it rain hard.
December 6th, 2014 at 1:06 PM ^
I'd like to think Harbaugh caught wind of this and told all his family and friends to put mad money on these odds
December 6th, 2014 at 1:14 PM ^
couldn't he place some big money on the right answer? seems like a nice xmas bonus.
December 6th, 2014 at 4:34 PM ^
The maximum wager on those kinds of prop bets is low.

It wouldn't be legal because Mr. Hackett is a public employee and there are laws preventing him from personally profiting from decisions that he makes on behalf of the University. The state of Michigan has anti-corruption laws, and it seems pretty clear to me that they would apply in this case.
Otherwise, he would have an incentive to bet a longshot and then make a hiring decision based on something other than the best interest of the University.

I'm fairly certain that, at least in this country, Mayweather can't bet on his own fights.

So it would mean lots of $ relative to Harbaughs other options which have been talked about quite a bit.

Harbaugh wird kommen.
December 6th, 2014 at 1:15 PM ^
Believe it or not I think it going to be someone else. I can't believe I'm saying this but, I think Bob Stoops is going to be the guy. Just a gut feeling.
December 6th, 2014 at 1:24 PM ^
I am not 100% sure I would want Harbaugh over Stoops.

Boy, I was going to get my hopes up based on Michigan insiders and people who know Harbaugh, but cjellison1325's gut says Bob Stoops and that should be enough for anyone.
