CC: Brady Hoke assistants

Submitted by RoseBowlBound on

I know the concept of Brady Hoke as a potential Head Coach is extremely polarizing to many posters, but it is probably under consderation.  This is an article from the San Diego Union Tribune that points out SDSU thinks they may be able to retain a lot of Hoke's current staff if he were offered the job at Michigan.  That probably makes him less attractive of an option on the margin.

"Weber believes if Hoke leaves, most of his coaching staff would stay in San Diego."

Karsh on 97.1 brought up that he would be able to assemble a big name staff, with Loeffler, Trgovac, Brown and get some other Michigan guys back into the program. Which sounds good to me!

maybe that is plan B then.  I don't really care that the new coach (if RR is fired) is a Michigan man or hires Michigan men onto his staff.  I would just like to see a staff that can coach well in all 3 phases of the game and can adapt to its players.  If Hoke can do that, fine.  If it's someone who hasn't even been brought up, fine.  If it's Harbaugh, fine.  I don't really care.  But it seems clear that there is too much working against RR and his staff, and it might be the case that any coach without Michigan ties might get the same poor treatment that RR got.  But if the coach who is hired is alienated from day one and can't take the heat and show clear improvement as in winning in the Big Ten and beating rivals, then we're just back where we started.  If it takes a Michigan man to avoid all of that shit, then so be it.

This is exactly what  I would hope to see happen.

There are currently a bunch of awesome UM-connected coaches that could be available.  Imagine bringing in the following:

HC - Hoke - Great recruiter, good at turning around struggling programs

Loeffler - QB coach - Denard is lighting fast and will always be a home run threat with hil legs.  A guy like Loeffler could improve his mechanics / reads and make him Vick-like.

Trgovac - D coordinator - with his impressive NFL resume, I can't imagine that he would not improve the D performance and D recruiting (he was known as a good recruiter when he was at ND)

Chuck Heater - Asst. DC, secondary coach, recruiting coordinator - again, a lights out recruiter with a damn impressive resume.

Fred Jackson - retain from current staff

And there are others out there.  To me, this is a dream team of coaching staff.  All great coaches, all great recruiters, all with ties to the glory years.  No, Hoke is not as sexy as JH, but as a whole, I would take this staff over the Stanford staff.

The way we have treated Hoke as a possible coach sounds a lot like the way Chizik was treated when he was hired by Auburn. Look how that turned out. I am not saying Hoke is my first choice but saying a coach will fail doesn't mean he will.

I'm in the boat against him but I have no say in the matter. Also I'm not going to compare Hoke to Chizik for 2 reasons.

1. He is a coach of a SEC team with that recruiting you can turn around programs in a year . Oversigning.

2. Hoke is a Carr guy and I feel this is not the right guy because he may  get the job through back door BS and with help from a  group who setup our current coach to fail.

I agree with point 2 he is not the guy. I said he is not my first option. I am not comparing him to Chizik. I am comparing the situation if he were hired.

My point was that IF he was hired is us saying "he would fail and is not the guy" does not mean he would.

If Hoke is offered the job, he'll be receiving phone calls and resumes from the legion of Michigan Men the football program has sent out into the coaching world over the years. The end result would be a staff that understands the Michigan tradition and cares deeply about the football program. He won't need to bring the bulk of his SDSU staff with him to succeed.

I just don't see why you take a risk on Hoke and fire RR...  RR is a fantastic coach, everything will work out, just don't freak out if/when he stays.  Seriously.

What is Big Ten football? Beat up on each other and get blown out in a bowl game? We saw what happened to Michigan vs USC and ohio state vs all the SEC teams. Michigan doesnt need to play Big Ten football, they need to play to win games. Is Rodriguez the guy? I thought so at first but as a RR defender he is slowly losing me. Maybe it's Harbaugh, maybe its someone that doesnt have Michigan ties.

I do know this though, our fan base is so blinded by this "Big Ten football" and "Michigan man" jumbo bumbo that it could be the very thing that prevents Michigan from winning a National Championship again for a very long time. The Big Ten has two championships since 1971, one a shared title and the other on a controversial pass interference call which most fans will say Miami got jobbed.

I have to ask: Is this yet another Michigan AD gnome who feels compelled to mention Brady Hoke on this 'blog?

- - -

From the post: "... SDSU thinks they may be able to retain a lot of Hoke's current staff ..."

So, SDSU *thinks* they may be able to retain most of the staff.  In what universe does that speculation qualify as news here?

- - -

Let's travel to the universe where Brady Hoke is a reasonable candidate for the yet-to-be-made-available job at Michigan.  Does anyone think that the inability to get assistant coaches from a non-BCS school would make Hoke less attractive as a coach?  Sorry ... don't see it ... at all.

Rodriguez would have actually been fired already.  If Brandon had a deal in place with Harbaugh and wanted to let him coach the game without speculation I could maybe see going that route (though how that lessened the speculation we saw regarding Harbaugh I don't really know).  Hoke (or someone with an equivalent resume) is a coach we could get at any time.  If Brandon was thinking Harbaugh (or maybe another big name) or retain Rodriguez his plan makes sense.  If he was thinking Harbaugh or anybody but Rodriguez, why would RR still be here?

Assistant coaches are very important to the success or failure of a head coach.  It would be impossible to convince me otherwise.  It's true with football and any other organization.

A head coach needs to be able to identify and retain good assistants to keep the program successful.  I have no idea if Hoke's current assistants are any good but turning around SDSU probably was due in no small part to talented assistants.

There's one thing I'm certain of:

Blogs and fans have howled in outrage upon the hiring of some pretty good coaches (Tressel, Bielema, Chizik).

They've also erupted in praise of some Grade A incompetents (Bill Callahan, Charlie Weis) or otherwise unsuccessful coaches (uh, this blog, 3 years ago).

I'm not going to get too upset or too happy no matter who gets hired. I'll save that for at least the end of their first year.
