Burke invited to participate in USA Nat. team mini camp

Despite now coming off the bench at Utah, it looks like Trey Burke is getting a shot at the USA men's national team. Super happy for him and hope he has more chances to prove himself in the NBA coming out of this mini camp. I'm a huge fan of Trey, but this does seem a bit curious.

This coming year will be the make-or-break in terms of whether he gets a second NBA contract.

Yeah come on, he's gonna get another contract. He was solid as a rookie and below average as a sophomore. His floor is mediocre backup point guard. My prediction is a few good-great sessions. - Jameer Nelson is my career comparison. His ceiling is still as high as his situations and desire dictate. Billups isn't a perfect comparison style and size-wise, but it took him several years to really figure things out. Burke will be a long time pro barring injury.

True, it does seem curious that Burke is on the list of invitees; to that point, Steins Twitter feed is chock full of incredulity. Sadly I see no clear path for Burke to see major playing time on Utah next year given their long term developmental goals for Exum. But I figured my first forum topic should be optimistic, and this is a real opportunity for one of my favorite wolverines to turn his fortunes around.

I love Trey and think he can be a solid player on a good team. It is easy to forget he is only 22 years old. Utah isn't that far away from being good. If the Jazz were in the East they might be a 3/4 seed. That being said...

Burke has struggled too much in the league with making shots and getting to the line to make this team, I think he was brought in as a body to go against the 1s & 2s. I think it will be another great learning experience for him as he practiced with Team USA last year. Hope he continues to grow as a player.

He knows the college basketball landscape better than anyone, I'm willing to bet the recommendation to add Burke for a tryout/practice player came from him. Look at the names that were added and look at how many were top college players just a few years ago. One hell of a D1 All-America team.
