Brian Griese to 49ers as QB coach

In a surprising move (to me, at least), Adam Schefter is reporting that ESPN commentator Brian Griese is going to become the 49ers QB coach under Kyle Shanahan. That will be interesting as he might be the guy who makes or breaks Trey Lance.

That’s digging pretty deep into the pool of older white guys with no coaching experience.  Good luck, Brian.  Let’s hope genetics and playing experience count for something.

Maybe the 49ers saw the credentials for a former NFL QB on Michigan's 1997 National Championship squad, thought they were getting the GOAT back on his childhood favorite and signed the contract before realizing they had the wrong guy.

All kidding aside, best of luck to Brian Griese! Being under Kyle Shanahan seems like a really promising gig and he will become a hot commodity very fast if he cashes Trey Lance's tools into production. Anytime a Michigan guy joins the coaching ranks, it's another possible coaching tree link down the road, so great news to hear!

I said "Hi" to Griese and one of the other guys I can't remember (Steve Levy?) at the Embassy Suites in Romulus, MI on the morning of a game at the breakfast buffet.

Odd move.  Wikipedia doesn't show any coaching experience.  They could be wrong of course, and it's definitely possible for him to succeed either way but it's not a gamble I would have taken.

Happy for him though!  And hey, maybe this means TB12 is going to pull a Favre and get traded to the 9ers this summer

With Aikman signing to color commentate MNF, the team of Riddick, Griese and Levy are all probably out. Good luck trying to coach up Jimmy Gag and Trey Lance.

We called them…

We dogsat for Griese during the Outback bowl against Bama (I think it was that year, I was young). He stayed around for a few to play catch with me. Seemed like the coolest guy in the world at the time.

His dog was a shit though.

On paper it’s a pretty questionable hire at best, but Shanahan is damn good at identifying talented coaches and bringing them through the ranks.
