Blake staying put means UM is screwed for Montgomery?
This news is what most likely puts an end to UM's chances at getting Montgomery. Hope Sam gets along with all 43 of his new freshman recruits at UNC

What's that make, like 30 commits now? That's absurd.

the Knowledge's boy Rex Ryan would drag Blake to the Jets. It definitely helps the Heels case for Sam.

If Sam wants to be one of 30 - 40 recruits in this class, then more power to him.
I hope these kids understand when they are upper classmen, they might be asked to transfer, etc. So that they can sign a huge class.

especially because a big chunk of the UNC draw is high quality academics. If you're telling kids to come because they can get a great education even if football doesn't make them a star, its a pretty bastard move to force them out so you can sell the lie to 5 extra freshman.

You can look at this a couple different ways. The first is the way you are. The second is that they've been telling Sam all along that Blake's not going anywhere. This public announcement seems weird, and some sort of attempt to convince Sam they're not lying about it. Which then puts the argument in that they are worried that they won't get him, and are putting on every attempt to convince him.
The fact that he's saying I'm not going anywhere still might not be enough, because he's not bound to stay just because he announced it publicly. I'm sure this fact has been brought up by other coaches from other states.
It just seems odd to me that this assistant would have to announce to the media that he's not going anywhere. If they didn't think there was a problem, I don't really think this would be happening given the timing of it all.

Now I can resume my mild optimism about Sam signing with Michigan.

we really do need to shore up our "Sam" depth chart. And I'm not talking about the strong side LB'ers...I'm talking about people named Sam. Our depth at that position really took a hit with McGuffie leaving.

Blake is smart enough to know that Butch Davis is likely to experience wanderlust at any moment, and is in a pretty good position to take over as head coach when he does.
As for the numbers, every player thinks he is better than everyone else until he gets to school. I don't think that will be a deterrent to Montgomery at all. He probably sees himself as someone who doesn't have to worry about being dropped as long as he gets a chance to compete.
I do feel sorry for almost a third of the kids in that class, though. Maybe the NCAA should get involoved in situations like this.

What happens to those recruits that end up getting dropped by UNC? I agree with you that this practice of purposely oversigning recruits is rather slimy.

The NCAA should look into it, but I doubt they will. The problem is that there is a great deal of "bunching" in their class, with a large number of borderline 4-star/3-star kids who will have to be whittled down somehow. There are going to a be a number of stories on the sports blogs about kids losing LOI offers come signing day.
