B1G: Lunt to Illinois
The OSU (NTOSU) QB did what we kind of expected him to do, and will transfer to U of I:
One wonders if he'd have made the same decision, had his Man Coach not removed like 40 of his options. Still, good for any positive news for the conference.
He's originally from Illinois, so it makes sense. I think it's probably a good choice for him, too.
are aware of of how Gundy handled this, with zero class and zero integrity. Gundy has embarrassed Oklahoma State.
I would imagine that a lot of recruits are aware of what Gundy did. IMO, he has ruined his reputation as someone who will have a player's back. If a recruit doesn't know, I'm sure that there are plenty of competing schools who will make sure to address it in active recruiting battles.
it's not the first time, Gundy did it....
My understanding was that the transfer blocks had been specifically against schools whose coaches had contacted him prior to whatever deadline exists before which they can be contacted, but that may be out of date.
Good pick-up for Illinois' next coach
I think he will do well at Illinois. Cubit's offenses at WMU were consistently decent with MAC level talent and he has an extensive playbook. Remains to be seen if Lunt will bring them out of the quagmire they find themselves in now but considering what Beckman has been through thus far, I'm sure he's thrilled.
"Big Lunt to Illinois"? I didn't even think of "Lunt" as a last name-- more like a term to describe O-Lineman.
They have a decent summary of Lunt's competition at the position in 2014 over at SBNation (LINK)
Essentially, it would be Scheelhaase's rarely-seen but ostensibly serviceable backup - Reilly O'Toole, as well as four-star Aaron Bailey and a 2014 commit (if he stays with Illinois) named Chayce Crouch.
In the opinion of an author quoted in this piece anyway, Bill Cubit's system is pretty much made for a QB such as Lunt. According to this, one of the reasons he wanted a transfer was a lack of communication regarding the QB competition and where he stood in it.
This means the Big Ten should have at least four bowl eligible teams in 2014
The B1G takes it a step further, although you only sit out the typical one year... you have to pay your own way if you transfer within the conference.
I believe that rule has changed, so now players have to sit out the NCAA-mandated one year, but they can receive a scholarship after the transfer. If Justin Boren did his thing now, he wouldn't have had to pay his own way like he did a couple years ago.
