It's so fantastic that Austin's father emphasized academics before basketball.  It's extremely unfortunate the accidents that Austin experienced, but his father's emphasis on academics have set Austin up for the rest of his life.  He should be used as a role model to all young athletes to understand that things can happen to you that are out of your control, but even with all that Austin has gone thru he still has his academic goals.  Best of luck to you in your studies, Austin.

Austin discusses this in this video on MGoBlue.com

If you watch the MGOBLUE video, it's very clear that this was handled the right way from the start. Coach B and Austin had been discussing this for a while, and it's not just for the basketball team - its really for Austin to be able to focus on his academics, which is much more important than playing 60 seconds of garbage time 5 times in a season. Also, check out Beileins arm around Hatch throughout the interview. There's no doubt how much he cares for Austin. This is a story that we should all be proud of as it represents the best of our university and of college athletics.

I also heard that his class work was better when he did not go on road trips. His UM degree is his #1 job and future. The guy is all class and a huge winner in life no mater what awful cards he has been dealt.

Basketball is not "who he is" and honestly had little future besides being a feel good story in mop up duty. He will be a TERRIFIC assistant and key contributer to the team and school he loves (and they love him).

This is a positive move and needed to be done regardless of what recruit is on the horizon. We all wish Austin the best and he is no less inspirational in his new role.
