Alumni club festivities / bar in San Antonio for Saturday?

Submitted by MGoArchive on

I'll be headed down to San Antonio to watch the game on Saturday.

*Edit - was talked into buying a ticket for Saturday so I'm in.

I'm planning on driving out Monday from Houston (assuming all goes right), and I'll let you know there are plenty of Wolverines in Texas so there will definitely be an alumni bar (possibly several) setup somewhere near the stadium. We usually have 2-3 for football games here in Houston, there's a big one in Austin and I know there's a good sized community in Dallas, to say nothing of San Antonio since I haven't been there on a game day before.

Also, there should be a pretty good wash of tickets available on Monday for a decent price. My plan is to hang out at the alumni bar closest to the stadium and buy tickets as close to tip-off as possible when they drop to the $30-$50 per ticket range.

You really think they'll drop to $50 a ticket? The Kansas fans will soak everything up (they're probably going all in with the both sessions tickets), so my concern is that if Kansas wins, things are going to get really tight for Monday.

I've asked the Austin alumni club Facebook group if they have any recommendations for a bar.

I propose we take over Drink Texas (https://www.yelp.com/biz/drink-texas-san-antonio?osq=sports+bars), which is exactly a mile from the stadium - https://goo.gl/orQ7kH

The other bars around the stadium looked tiny/this is near the river. Granted this place will probably be crazy because tens of thousands of people will descend on San Antonio, but if we can get 15-20 people together, I can call and ask if they'll reserve us some tables.

If Kansas wins, it may not get there. But if they don't I expect there to be a huge amount of tickets on stubhub from the Kansas fans that bought the full package.

FWIW, my buddy who is a Villanova grad bought tickets to final in Houston a couple years ago in a 100-level section for $60, and he bought them well ahead of time (either Sunday or Monday morning).

Part of the reason for getting a bar as close as possible to the stadium is so you can actually wait until just after tipoff and get super cheap tickets. If you're close enough, you can buy tickets and be in your seat 5-10 minutes later and only miss a couple of minutes of early game time. The security and entrance lines will have died down, so it's actually pretty great. I've never done it for a final, but I did it for Sweet 16 and Elite 8 in 2013 and 2014.

If I end up going I'll let you know where we're headed!

I'll be in San Antonio on Saturday for work and I'm actually looking for a ticket to the games that night, but I really haven't found anything online for less then $300...

Does anyone on the board have a hook-up for cheaper tix or do you think I could get one the day of the games for less?

If I can't find a ticket for cheap enough, I'd definitely be down to take over whatever bar the board decides.

If you're a member of the alumni association you may be able to find tickets on MGoBlue that MAY be cheaper. But I'm not sure when/if they've gone on sale, and there's a good chance that if the tickets have gone on sale, they've already been sold out.

But there will be scalpers at the game for sure. If you've got time and the arena isn't too far out of the way (I'm not sure, never been to San Antonio), it may not hurt to go down there and check it out. You may run into someone right before gametime who is just looking to unload the tickets.

UMmasotta says that he was able to snag tickets cheap (look above), but that was for a Sweet 16/Elite 8 game...

Honestly, I think Saturday is going to be pretty tight due to Kansas fans. I'd like to be wrong, but I just feel that Kansas fans are going to drive all the prices up and it's going to be difficult to find tickets. We will see.

First post on the blog, followed for a long time!

I am recent grad from NY and am flying down Friday. I am looking for tickets to the games as well. I am not a season ticket holder, but I am a member of the alumni association.

I can't seem to get tickets from Michigan since I do not have points with the athletic department. I am just looking for two tickets in the Michigan sections ideally.

I did find out while calling the athletic department, that the Michigan sections are 113-118 of the Alamo Dome, but tickets are very expensive on StubHub, Vivid Seats, etc.

If anyone who has two extra tickets that were bought through the athletic department, and is looking to sell at face or slightly above face, please shoot me an email at [email protected].

Thanks and Go Blue!

Do we have a lot of Michigan alums/fans in San Antonio? I want to see the crowd rocking like in LA and NY

I'd be down to get a meetup at a bar close to the Alamodome prior to the game. Drink Texas or any other place works for me.

Unfortunately it looks like my student tickets won't allow me to stay for the Kansas-Villanova game, so looks like I'm in the market to find a bar packed with Michigan fans after the first game.

In a perfect world, this bar would also be packed with wealthy alums who happen to pity the poor boy who is spending the last of his savings in order to drive 3000 miles to watch a game for 2 hours.

They didn't have anything to share with respect to an official pep rally (yet), other than to say it will be posted on the website.

I'm honestly a bit disappointed in the Alumni Association - other than selling overpriced travel packages (which they don't even bundle, they have a company do it for them), they are completely hands off with respect to organizing fun events/bars for alumni and fans. That's pretty shitty.

So yeah, join the MGoSanAntonio chat (https://goo.gl/CJ3tCW) - I'm going to reach out to the San Antonio club and ask if we can set something up with them for Friday night/a bar for Saturday.

Whenever someone from the Alumni Association calls/emails me begging me to pay their High Fee to join the association, I simply respond that I will be using what I "would" pay to the association to pay the markup on secondary market tickets instead of giving that money to the Alumni Association. The only access the Association ever has to game tickets for anything is through high-priced travel packages for the extremely rich.  Thus, my annual fee dollars will be going to Stubhub, Vivid Seats, etc., rather than to an Association that never has access to tickets and can never organize pregame events for an ocassion like this.
