Adam Rittenberg: anonymous B1G coaches re Michigan say "don't believe the hype"

Submitted by Maizen on

Despite returning 16 starters and 3 All Americans off a 10 win team and signing a top 5 recruiting class, Jim Harbaugh's colleagues in the B1G are feeling some type of way (butthurt) about their outlook in 2016 according to Adam Rittenberg. Yes, the same Adam Rittenberg who wrote before last years opener that "anonymous coaches" were telling him that Utah would be blowing Michigan out by halftime and they would be lucky to win 7 games. This years latest sampling from the blogger, which I admit I find hilarious.

One Big Ten coach cited the over-under numbers posted for Michigan in Las Vegas -- Westgate has the Wolverines at 10 wins -- and said, "I'd take the under every day of the week and twice on Sunday. I'd be shocked [if they go over]." Another Power 5 coach, when asked if Michigan will be a national contender in Year 2 under Harbaugh, simply shook his head.

"Ohio State dismantled them," a Big Ten coach said. "It was really men against boys. So what does that mean? I know they feel good about some of the players they have coming back. I'm sure they're going to coach them well. It's Year 2 in the program. They'll be more confident in what they'll ask them to do.

"Jake played out of his mind," a Big Ten coach said. "Who's the quarterback?"

Another Big Ten coach noted that Harbaugh's system helps out the quarterback by putting more of the onus on the line and the run game. A Big Ten offensive coordinator praised Michigan's defense, especially a line led by Chris Wormley. But asked if the Wolverines are playoff-ready, he said no way.

"You're talking about running the table," a Big Ten assistant said. "Not that [Harbaugh] won't probably get there, but I don't think he has the pieces now."

Added a Big Ten coach: "Don't believe the hype."

Every team has question marks though. It's rare that a team brings back 22 players. Alabama has a new qb, OSU brings back 6 players, Clemson has to break in new players on defense etc. That's why I don't get the "we're not a playoff team because we have to break in a new qb and center" folks. We have a great coach with great players. Maybe we don't make it and maybe we do but there's certainly reason to believe we can win a championship.

Every year I get so stupidly angry about pundits and coaches solely judging last year for this year. It's infuriating how often the national championship contenders/winners of the biggest bowls of last year are ranked at the top of next year's preseason polls regardless of who they bring back.

I get it a bit if they bring back a big QB because that does cover up a lot of holes but....Alabama! I firmly believe this year we have the kind of talent and depth they have had in years when Bama did not bring back their starting QB and won the national championship.

Cannot wait for football to get here and see who is right.

To hell with anyone that does not believe this staff or its upperclassmen. If the quarterback situation sorts itself early and the underclassmen contribute positively the sky is the limit in year two of Harbaugh. Dr. Blitz and a great group of upperclassmen should make for an outstanding season and the best defense in a long time.

The only thing I could think of after reading this is:

Don't believe the hype it's a sequel

As an equal can I get this through to you?

look as fans we are all hyped about the team and Harbaugh, but he really is in year two only and OSU owned us last year. I think these coaches are just saying take a breathe and relax a little bit, it's a long season and there is a lot to prove first. We do need someone to step up and be a solid QB this year and our LB's are very unproven.

It's been about 10 years since we've been in real contention and I think the hype train needs to slow down a little bit until we actually prove something on the field and beat some good teams.

some Big 10 coaches are bitter, little cunts. Big whoop, want to fight about it?

Sorry if that C word is offensive to the PC (Pussy Cunt) crowd.

Boom.

We are very likely to be favored in every game except at OSU (maybe that one as well). I expect that Harbaugh will have his team winning the games they are supposed to. Isn't it a stretch to predict a Harbaugh team in year to will be upset?

We've heard this hype before and it hasn't gone well. I'm buying it but am cautious....the QB situation right now seems to be a huge question. I also wonder about the running game from time to time, a healthy deveon is good, but his style makes it hard to stay healthy. Hopefully Drake or Ty have big seasons. Defense looks solid, hopefully we get good production from LB's, that seems to be a question...I'm hoping for a breakout season!

This has been touched on already, but the "who's the qb?" argument for why Michigan will struggle is absurd. The same issue was dealt with last year, and a guy with 4-weeks of practice with the team ended up having the 2nd most passing yards in a season in school history.
The line should be solid. The running game should be solid. And, most importantly, the pass-catchers are some of the best in the country. PLU, there's no Utah in Salt Lake City games to start the year! Just a bunch of patsies un the B1G season. The QB won't be expected to win games for the team until well into the season, and by then he will be ready for it.

We are very worried about what anonymous B1G coaches think said no one ever.  These guys are all behind the curve and are in for a very ugly surprise when they face us.

is making my brain hurt, after a long work week. Ain't nobody got time for that. As for the article; Good- let all the haters doubt us. It'll taste that much sweeter if we can prove them wrong this season.

I can get people saying Michigan is overhyped due to the whole haven't won anything in a while. I just don't like people saying "well Ohio State destroyed them so they can't be that good". Well MSU was destroyed by Bama so they're not good, most of the B1G has been beat really bad by OSU so no one else is good either. I feel Chris Ash made the Ohio State comment, since Rutgers views themselves as OSU Lite, and swear that they'll knock off Michigan.

In 2015, Michigan got "dismantled" by a team that had 12 players drafted in the NFL so therefore they won't be good in 2016. It similar to how the 2007 Florida Gators got dismantled by Michigan in their bowl game and weren't any good in 2008.

No reason to get angry. Sounds like a fairly sober, objective analysis from outside the bubble  we'd be wise to take note of. Take the Under at 10, and be happy if/when they get more. It would be stupid to take anything for granted.

Rudock upped his game just about the point in the season where the defense started to wobble, so it worked out pretty well. Sadly, the OSU game did indeed look like men vs. boys.

Rudock was a cool-headed graduate transfer. Just 'because Harbaugh' doesn't mean there won't be growing pains with whoever starts at QB.

And Michigan has to to prove that it has a consistent, dependable running game; or LBrs that can shut down multi-dimensional opponents.

Michigan does have some experienced talent, but certainly not the depth that OSU or Alabama have. To make it to the playoffs might not take a miracle. but it will take a large amount of good fortune. Three of the toughest opponents on the road in the last month of the season is not a favorable schedule, no matter how easy September's schedule looks from here.

We'll hopefully, (dare I say 'probably'?) get there someday soon, but to think Michigan a lock for a playoff run this year is foolishly optimistic at this point, and just setting ourselves up for a lot of whining and disappointment if it doesn't happen.

Let's keep in mind that any coach you ask on Michigan's schedule wouldn't even be coaching at this level if he didn't imagine his own team beating Michigan when they play, so that accounts for one loss already.

answer grounded in reason, an example might be. I would say they have one of if not THE toughest schedules in the B1G. They have a fairly large question at QB. Those would be the two knocks on the team. Otherwise I don.t see anything holding them back. That is a veteran group at practically every position on the field. The defensive line in this league is very important and theirs is loaded. The same can be said for the O line. So yeah if they have that QB problem situated by the Wisconsin game I would say they would be a team that would not be a bad bet to win the B1G title. As far as a national title goes well, that may be a bridge too far. Thats why we play the games.
