22 years ago today, "Judgement day" in college football

Submitted by UMxWolverines on November 8th, 2019 at 12:13 PM

Tomorrow marks the first time there will be  two matchups of 8-0 teams, with Alabama and LSU as well as Penn State and Minnesota.

However 22 years ago today was "judgement day", when 8-0 Michigan took on 7-0 Penn State and 8-0 Florida State took on 8-0 UNC.

I was only 3 for this so I have no recollection of it, but it is fun to rewatch. I just long for a Michigan team to finally play its best football in the month of November like this one did.

Yeah, PSU had won 3 straight vs. U-M prior to that one.

As you said, 1997 changed everything for both schools for the next ~10 years.  U-M was an annual B1G contender during those years.  While PSU, despite a championship in 2005, was mostly a non-contender before some truly very very good teams arose in 2008 & 2009.

I've said this before on this blog.  But I still have a 1997 Sporting News college football preview magazine.  The preview mags that cost $5 at your grocery store.

One of their feature articles, before all the individual team previews, was by (a U-M alum, no less!) Michael Bradley.  It was entitled "What is wrong with Michigan?"  Bradley referred to Michigan as a "withering national power", "a corporation that has just had a lucrative patent expire and is unprepared to handle the hungry competition banging on the market-place door", and "unprepared to handle the increasing competition in the B1G."

To say the least, that article that was written in the summer looked silly come November!

I was there, and it was glorious.  First time a team went from No. 4 to No. 1 when the top 2 teams in the country (Nebraska at No. 1 and Florida St. at No. 2) also won.

Was there. Still have the commerative t-shirt. That was a 50 gallon drum of whup ass put on the Blue & White.

Most of their alumni left at halftime. As we walked away from the stadium after the game, the stadium glowed on the hill in the dark with the sweet sound of The Victors coming from every direction. A memory this guy will never forget.

That makes me feel so old.  I was a sophomore at UM that year and still vividly remember that weekend.  Before the game I had cut from front page of the daily talking about Judgement Day and taped it over my bed. I cannot believe that was 22 years ago.

I was there - one helluva a good time!  I went with PSU alum/fan co-workers and we spent some time near the Gameday setup.  Couldn't see or hear anything, though.  That stadium went dead silent almost as soon as kickoff happened.  It perked up on the first 1st down catch, but then their wind was gone for the rest of the day.  That was the play that permanently removed two players from football.  Just as PSU was starting to get some life, that play happened.  It was just going through the motions afterward.

And the motions were GLORIOUS!!!

To a person, every PSU fan/student I met later that night was congratulatory and complimentary, and had nothing good to say about Nebraska being gifted a win.

Senior year at Michigan, we watched the game at Scorekeepers. Right as we were leaving we saw that Nebraska kicked ball play. Headed up South U and saw a big crowd outside president bollinger’s house. He and his wife came out and we sang the fight song. Then he inexplicably invited everyone into their house. We stumbled around like drunken fools. My friend apparently stole a hair brush and hand mirror from their bathroom ?‍♂️. We then walked up State and I threw up in a trash can. Puke and rallied like a boss.

Next day while driving by the scene of the crime there were 3 carpet cleaning vans parked in their driveway. They HAD white carpet throughout the house. Can’t imagine anything could salvage that.

I was at the Michigan / Penn State game in 97.  I was struck by how far away from the stadium that we had to park, how welcoming the fans that we ran into were and what an erector set kind of stadium that it was.  Michigan's defense set the tone that day with a sack on their first play.  We had a blast.  The touchdown by Woodson on offense was the icing on the cake.  The Daydrion Taylor hit was in front and just to the left of us.  I'll never forget it.  Great trip if you ever get a chance to go.  Happy Valley is literally in the middle of nowhere.

Amazing how long Herbstreit and Corso have been doing Gameday.

I'd have loved to see Beano Cook's desk from the other side and the bottle of Jim Beam sitting there!  What a blowhard.  Having him predict Michigan winning was the kiss of death.

I was 34 and remember this game well while living and working in TX. Herbstreet has aged the best out of the 3. Corso was a lot more analytical before his stroke. He did put a nitny lion head on when he made his final pick.

That goes down as the best victory I’ve seen Michigan have in my 35+ years of fandom.   Everything was on the line against a great opponent.. It was the key game in the national championship season. Michigan was going to prove if they were true contenders, or pretenders.

First play the game Glen Steele had a huge sack on the QB on the first play and that set the tone for a severe ass-kicking.

One of my most favorite days of being a Michigan fan. Rubbing in that beat down of those bastards Monday morning back at my high school in western PA was glorious. Whoooooooa Nelly!!!! Oh how I hate Penn State.
