2017 Freshmen Burned Redshirt rollcall

Submitted by d_ronii on

I would like to get a roll call of the redshirts that were burned yesterday. Seems lower than I expected. Less Wtf burned redshirts so far. Here is what I have : (updated per link from Farnn - thanks)

1. Donovan Peoples-Jones

2. Tarik Black

3. Ambry Thomas

4. Aubrey Solomon

5. J'Marick Woods

6. Ben Mason

7. Benjamin St. Juste

8. Kwity Paye

9. Andrew Stueber

A lot of true freshmen were dressed and on the sideline. I assume we will see a few more this Saturday versus Cincinnati

They can play 4 games now without burning the shirts. Given the depth chart this year and the This Year-ness of next year I expect a lot of freshmen to play. That list above is really minimal.

The redshirt rule hasn't changed at all.  Stew Mandel reported back in May that the AFCA had proposed a new rule that they hope will be voted on in January of 2018.  And while its expected to pass, for now nothing has changed.

The current rules are the same -- play a single snap in ANY game of a season and you burn your redshirt.  If the school can prove that you suffered a season-ending injury prior to the completion of 30% of your team's regular-season games (typically 4) then you can apply for a medical redshirt.  But that is only granted after you've exhausted all of your other eligibility.

Since a lot of schools are abusing that medical redshirt loophole (including Michigan), the new rule would closer reflect the current reality and just make it all legal and less shady.  The proposed rule change would make it so a player could play in ANY four games of a season (could be something like the first two games, one in week 8, and then the bowl game) and as long as they didn't play in a fifth game they could maintain their redshirt.

The oversight committee met in June and decided to continue discussion on the matter at their next meeting October 2nd and 3rd (they are also looking at a 14-week season with two bye weeks for each team).  If they all agree on the rule, they'll move it along to an official vote on the matter in January at the NCAA convention.

Since coaches are pretty much unanimously in favor of it, its expected to pass.  It would likely go into effect for the 2018 season, which would mean the old redshirt rules would apply to people playing this current season.  So anyone that played in week 1 vs. Florida would have had their redshirts burned and we won't know if they're going to get a restored medical redshirt year until after the 2020 season -- and that's only if Michigan wants them back for a 5th year.

During mop up duty in the next few games they need to ditch O'korn and let Peters get some action. It wasn't the right time and place to do it in Dallas but it'll be a better setting in AA.

Speight is better than O'Korn but that's not saying much IMO.  He's Navarre 2.0.

He sure did on the 2nd pick six yesterday- from the moment the ball was snapped he was staring at Perry. Also, so frustrating to see a wide open TD missed again to Kekoa, should have been an easy TD. Also, there were 3-4 instances where a good throw would have led to a completion but Speight threw it out of bounds because of inaccuracy. Give your receivers a chance! Hawt take here but I thought Speight played pretty poor and not just cuz of 2 pick 6's

I understand he's not Aaron Rodgers, but it's surprising how high he still is on his throws.  Also, what worried me the most about the missed TD to Kekoa was how badly he overthrew him.  Even if that ball is caught, he's standing out of bounds when he makes the catch.

I worry about him in Happy Valley or Madison if those overthrows are because he was too hyped.  Those are going to be electric atmospheres.

Hmm not sure I agree. How about this: Any time that they need to insert a backup and the game is still in doubt: O'Korn, because he's clearly the #2 and has a proven ability to play, even if he doesn't light the world up. Any time the game is well in hand and it's just practicing: Peters, because he needs experience for next year.

Peters isn't starting this year and he's not likely going to replace a RS Sr./2 year starter NEXT year.

So he's got 2 more winters, 2 more springs, and 2 more summers to get ready until he's battling McCaffrey.

I'm sorry, but a few mop up snaps are not going to be the experience that puts him over the edge in the fall of 2019. No one is going to be going "Start Peters because he was 3 for 4 with a nice first down against Cincinnati's second team on Sept. 9th, 2017."

O"Korn is the #2...he should get everything that comes with that because we're playing THIS season.

Peters is the #3. Giving him random snaps isn't going to do anything for experience by the time he gets around to starting.

I agree up until you say O'Korn should get everything that comes with being #2 (unless that's just a tautology). If there is a major injury to S or O'K, Peters becomes the backup and will need to be ready to go. He will certainly be #2 next year (or possibly #1 if there is an injury or S has the kind of year that encourages an early departure) so it's important to get him some experience.

My suggestion is to tell the QBs that S will be starting against AF, Cincinnatti and Purdue. He'll play a half, then O'K and Peters will each have a quarter.

Can see it under participation on the boxscore from mgoblue.com

In addition to those listed above, I also see Paye, St-Juste, Mason, and Stueber.

I'm sure there will be several more over the next weeks when they are at home and can dress more players.  Plus we've heard about some minor injuries on a few of the DL who should see snaps to condition them for next year.

I expect a lot of freshmen to get at least some minutes, so we'd have to go a long way down the roster before we start running into the "WTF" burned shirts, at least in my own opinion.

I remember seeing all the players listed in for at least a while. Many others dressed and on the sideline. I think that will be a familiar sight this season.
