Projecting the 2016 Football Class - V3.0

Submitted by alum96 on

Updating projections as we go along and get material new info and changes.  This will be version 3; future updates will happen on an as needed basis.

Working framework

  • Lorenz indicated Michigan has now signaled they have 27 spots (not 28 as we all assumed)
  • 21 current commits.
  • Various peeps with premium access say we will grayshirt here or there, so I made some projections with that in mind.  I grayshirted 1 player.  That knocked down class to 20* (*grayshirt is still part of class but doesnt count against scholarship until January).
  • We will have attrition from our current recruits, so I took best guesses and knocked out 3 not named Viramontes. That knocked current class down to 17.

Changes since last update

  • DT Jordan Elliott went from "projected in class" to "committment".
  • ATH Victor Viramontes (sigh) went from "committment" to "projected out of class".
  • CB Lavert Hill decommitted from Penn State.
  • DL Keyshon Camp hates Michigan weather so went from "projected in class" to "he gone".
  • Moved ATH Chris Evans from "likely decommit" back to "committment".
  • Moved DL Rashad Weaver from "committment" to "likely decommit".

Section 1 deals with current commits - who is staying and who is going. And who is going to open a spot by grayshirting. I listed us with 17 immediate scholarships and 1 grayshirt - with 3 decommits. Will discuss below chart.

  • I took an educated guess with 3 decommits based on how many spots still seem in play.
  • As for the 3 decommits, one seems clear unless UM misses on just about all other LB targets: David Reese. He wants early entry, crystal ballz have all changed for him, and we are recruiting a ton of LBs still.  Hence he is "most likely".
  • The other 2 decommits could come from just about any players ranked below 328, so I picked 2.  I had Chris Evans as one as he visited Purdue a while back but basically he was just a guess.  I've added him back this time around into the class and replaced him with Rashad Weaver who is sniffing around Temple so I assume this is the staff telling him to check out other options.  I've kept Kiante Enis as a decommit solely based on Ace's story that UM was only contacting him once a month; that "feels" like what Harbaugh did to commits at Stanford as a way to push them in another direction.  It's guesswork.
  • Antwaine Richardon impressed coaches in a camp setting on a bum knee so I have him staying in the class; however maybe someone like he or Sir Patrick Scott could be bumped out of class if David Long, Lavert Hill and Chris Brown all want in as they all corners. But I have them both in the class at this point.
  • Guessing on a grayshirt is hard to do. Half a year at UM for an out of state is still $12K or whatnot so I don't know how many kids families - esp in economically challenged spots - can afford this. Maybe they can financial aid. But a full ride elsewhere could always be the easier route. So I didn't want to put 2-3 grayshirts like some assume, so I am simply going with Josh Metellus as a guess.

Image result for projecting the future

Section 2 is who we will land and who we will miss on. This is based on trying to reverse engineer - obviously these things can change on a dime. I cheated here a bit by saying Quinn Nordin will be part of the class and decommit from PSU and go to UM despite having to pay out of pocket for a semester. Maybe a stretch but he is a Michigan kid and hey Harbaugh or Franklin for 4-5 years? So I have 11 commits which takes us to 29 total... 2 grayshirts.

Comments on Projected "YES"

  • 2 less sure names than in V2.0 as Camp is off the board entirely, and Elliott converted from yes to committment.  So with the decommittment of Viramontes this still leaves 2 open slots in a world we get 3 more decommittments and grayshirt Metellus and Nordin.   That "problem" can be easily solved by giving them both full scholarships and then that would be the class.  I am hoping 1 of those "OPEN" spots gets refilled by Vicious Vic.  I don't see any clear candidates from the projected "NO" column to fill into this area at this time so I've just left them as open slots.
  • I've split the "YES" into 2 categories - one UM feels like a clear leader or flip candidate and then more foggy.
  • Gary visits in January and this battle goes down to the wire due to SEC teams invovled but at this point he really seems like UM's to lose.
  • Walker had an "excellent visit" to Auburn last weekend, per Webb which sucks but thus far no crystal ballz seemed to have flipped.  But Webb seems to indicate its a bit less of a slam dunk than it was 5 days ago.  If we start hearing about new offers to running backs in coming weeks, it's time to worry.  Until then, keeping him firm.
  • Davis comments post official to OSU were less than giddy - sounded like he did not get the attention he wanted and he seems less "all in on UM" vs what he once was. But at this point I still have him in the class.  A few weeks ago Lorenz said UM would prefer a tackle (Delance) over a guard (Davis) but he changed that to either would work last week.  Not sure if that means there is room for both or first come first serve.  Maybe he should be in "less certainty" bucket after last visit.
  • Hill decommitted from PSU since last update; he and Corley announce together on Dec 16 - most assume UM for Hill and MSU for Corley.
  • Still have Young in class but wr recruiting seems very in flux.  Lorenz expected him to commit during OSU weekend - main competition Bama and FSU but UM is only 1 of 3 that would accept a commitment today.  Lorenz says maybe hhe wants to hear more from Miami with new coach now. UM is trying to juggle Corley, Crawford, McDoom, Jones, Young.
  • Jones has had UM as a favorite seemingly as long as Davis; it appears to be down to UM vs ND and UM is putting a hard core press on him with multiple visits the past few weeks.
  • I have Nordin as a grayshirt - he seems destined in the class as he has now removed PSU commit from twitter and seemingly lives in Ann Arbor on weekends.
  • Bush Jr. seems 50/50 FSU v UM.  Webb says UM staff feels very comfortable he is headed to Ann Arbor and he has also gotten a lot of attention by staff these past few weeks.  We'll know mid December.
  • Brown seems down to UM v Texas.  Brown's dad seems to like UM.

[this photo has nothing to do with the piece but it needed more photos and Jessica would definitely tell me "no"]

Comments on Projected "No"

  • I put the "no's" who at this time could maybe be a yes down the road at the top; then I put the rest of the masses lower.  Will focus on guys at top in this section.
  • To me Nauta wants to go to Georgia short of an ebola breakout hitting Athens.  Every comment he makes leaves the door wide open to go to Georgia so I am quite pensive on any chance for UM here.  We seem a clear second.
  • UM is putting a full court press on flipping Long from Stanford; still seems 50/50.
  • Delance visits this weekend, so we'll see if any crystal ballz - especially of the Wiltfong / Lorenz type budge.  If not, he probably drops to not really interested category.
  • Jackson seems like the LB UM likes most who has a legit chance of liking us back but seemed to be heavy with Durkin so that is not great.  Also him tweeting stuff about Durkin being with him then getting egg on face a few days later may be a negative.   A lot of big players are still involved here.
  • Vicious Vic apparently got some snake oil sold to him as a lot of shade was thrown towards UM.  Sounds like UM will try to get his mind changed so I'll put him in this category for now.

Of the rest of the "No"s

  • Hardman visited, said some "generic" nice things per Brian but we seem in 3rd behind GA / TN.  He loves Pruitt.
  • No movement on Kelly since last update - for a high profile recruitment we supposedly have a decent chance on you don't hear much in UM's favor other than "under the table" stuff - all the ballz to OK.
  • McCullouch seems more like a dream at this point.
  • Crawford is really quiet so impossible to read - the longer he does not commit to Oregon which is his dream school, I suppose better for UM.  UM was out to visit in past week.
  • With Camp off the board due to weather, UM pressing on Daniels again but apparently he loves Oklahoma, and now says "distance matters" so seems like we are outside looking in there.
  • Onwuzurike has been a mystery - starting to see some crystal ballz to Washington on him.
  • Maybe Mathis is a backup plan for Nauta but his other main choice is UF which runs a very TE heavy offense too.
  • McDoom seems to be getting Oregon attention as well.   Webb says he likes that UM is interested but doesn't know much about the program other than its a historic program (that's what sucking for many of these kids lifetimes will do).  Needs to schedule a visit to make this anything more than a distant fling.
  • Jones was here for OSU game - seems to be in a category with Young.
  • Hudson may be a backup plan if Bush / Jones fall through?

Why are no big time LB's looking to check us out? I mean our lack of numbers and our unproven talent at the LB spot would seem to convey a large chance at immediate play time for a solid incoming freshman. I've gotta admit, as much as I trust Harbaugh & staff, I am genuinely worried about the LB position for the foreseeable future.

If all goes to plan I expect UM will finish in the top 2 in the final team rankings. I sincerely hope that there is one big time surprise/ last minute addition to the class, who happens to be a top 250 guy not currently thought to be considering M (long shot I know)

Appreciate the hard work Alum96.

Actually when I did this last time around and had 29 players in the class - incl Gary and Walker, the projected total was #5 class in country.  I couldnt do it this time around because I had 2 OPEN slots instead of actual names.

I think people don't appreciate the talent hauls OSU continues to get; even their 2017 class is already ridiculously good.  3 out of the top 4 teams (LSU, OSU, Bama) have ave player rank of 91+-meanwhile UM and Stanford are in the 88s.  The total # doesnt matter too much to me; I look more at ave player rank and due to some of those guys at >1000 it will hurt a bit; we make it up in volume.  But still a top 10 class -keep in mind so was 2012 (#6) and 2013 (#4) - hope this one turns out better than those in terms of top end talent.

As for LBs I believe its because the star power in coaching is an offensive guy. Most of our top end guys are on offense because #Harbaugh.  We have not been great at DE and LB recruiting or player developmento for a while.  When other teams can show their own players in film, and we show them Baltimore ravens film of Lewis or Suggs.... it's because we don't have our own guys to show them.

But yes the playing time thing is wide open but you are competing with Oklahoma (playoff team, been good almost all these kids lives), FSU (NC a few years ago, been good almost all these kids lives), etc.  Also geography - most of the LBs we want are from south or west.  And again Durkin was not that well known - not like Harbaugh, and was recruiting for Florida a year ago at this time so had to start from scratch.

The one place UM should be making hay more is DBs - great story to tell with both Lewis and Peppers. We dont have quite the same story to tell at LBs unfort.

I've been saying this for a while and it's good to see a rational discussion.  OSU's talent level is significantly higher than ours because they continue to recruit at a higher level.  Just because we have recruited well doesn't mean they haven't recruited significantly better.  There is a big difference between 8 rankings in a class average.

But still a top 10 class -keep in mind so was 2012 (#6) and 2013 (#4) - hope this one turns out better than those in terms of top end talent.

Granted, we had bad luck with results in those two classes and if we continued to have that strong of classes that luck would probalby change.  But, even in our two best recruiting classes in recent years, OSU was higher than ours, even if only by one spot.  However, they have recruited at that level or higher every single year since, whereas ours has gone down.  We haven't had a top 10 class since and they have every single year, including #1 class for 2016 right now.

On one hand, I can appreciate Nauta's love for a school and wanting to stay in-state at Georgia...but on the other hand, come on man. If you go to Michigan you'll be a star. You go to Georgia, you'll probably end up catching 60 balls for your career.

If you are a tight-end and Jim Harbaugh wants you, I just can't understand how you go elsewhere if your end goal is the NFL. If Harbaugh was coaching elsewhere and we were head to head with him for a TE, I'd be stunned if we got him just cause there's really only one right option in that case.

and Bo had offered me a chance to play for Michigan it would have been impossible to go anywhere else regardless of what the style of play was or what the depth chart looked like.  If Nauta has that sort of passion for Ga football and he commits down there then more power to him.  (do hope he comes up here though)

kevin holt

December 9th, 2015 at 10:38 AM ^

But he doesn't have their version of Bo, because they'll have a first-year coach who hasn't even been announced yet. I would love to play for Michigan too, but if I were going to be a freshman in 2008 (oh wait, I was!), and I were a TE or a pro-style QB, say, and first-year coach Rich Rodriguez recruited me, it would be a lot different than if Harbaugh recruited me this year. I would really hate saying no to Michigan, but if I had NFL dreams it would be an easy choice, because I would know the spread-to-run system was not for me.

Basically, yeah it's a huge deal to get an offer from your hometown school, but if the fit isn't right and the team is in flux, it's not the same.

His bigger point was that Nauta might be more in love with being a Bulldog than whoever the coach may be. We love Bo and Lloyd and Harbaugh, but even if I was a HS stud, I'd give UM a serious look even coming off an awful year under RichRod. Nauta is probably more in love with the hedges than the coach between them.

likelihood. If he was that set on going there, he would have commited already. He's made comments that he'll still consider them. I don't read much into that. It makes sense that he will. He's a local kid and there's no need to write them off, especially publicly, while the coaching staff is still in flux. I don't think anyone knows where he's going or even what direction he's leaning.

It's tough to leave home and even your favorite school. If I was a fast slot receiver and had offers from OSU and Oregon (they excel in those offenses) and one from Michigan (don't really use that position), it be tough to say no to Michigan even if that means I can't dominate in my position.

I think the thinking goes, if you're good the NFL will find you and the coaches will figure out how to use you regardless of where you end up going.

If there are other aspects about Georgia he finds appealling enough to decide it's the place for him then c'est la vie.

MGoStrength

If we had the kind of success of an Alabama or an OSU it would be much easier for him to chose us considering our coaching and offensive style of play.  Granted, we'll grab a Peppers or a Gary here and there, but by and large I think it will be difficult for us to snag these top 150 guys from other regions until we become a little more steady staple in the top 15 rankings.  We probably need a few double digit winning seasons to start to draw these kids with much regularity.  We can get them for a year or two with a new regime like Harbaugh or even Hoke did in 2012 and 2013, but unlike with Hoke we have to turn that into more consistent on-field success IMO.  We can't keep getting beat by OSU year after year for example IMO (unless that's our only loss of the year).

Nice to have a single place to get an idea of where things stand.  It would be (more than) fun to see whatever white board race track diagram Harbaugh and Co. have set up for all these guys.

Honestly, it sounds so much like he wants to be close to home; I wish him well and hope he is happy there. I can't fault that. He's 18, a move to Michigan would be a big deal. And if he wants to go to GA so badly that he's willing to work in an offense that isn't as well suited to his skills, then he must really want to be there. I'd love to see him at UM. But I hope he does well and GA can find some way to fully utilize his talents.

is not so expensive as you think. Recruits can attend another school, like Washtenaw CC where the credits transfer. They can also wait a semester to enroll. Saban offered to get a recruit he wanted to greyshirt a job at Home Depot.

alum96

December 9th, 2015 at 11:00 AM ^

I doubt washtenaw cc credits transfer to UM.  UM is infamous for not taking JUCOs because so few of their credits transfer.  Could be wrong but seems unlikely to me - we'll see if that is how Harbaugh tries to do things.

Mr Miggle

December 9th, 2015 at 11:32 AM ^

easily transfer to U of M. Many regular students transfer in from them.  The counselors at those schools know which credits transfer and Michigan can make sure the players take the right classes too.

Michigan takes JuCos in other sports like baseball.  Baseball players may attend a JuCo because they can get a full ride that wouldn't be available elsewhere, not because of academics. Credits from California JuCos are routinely accepted too. There are two main reasons Michigan football rarely has JuCos. There aren't any decent programs at Michigan schools and football players typically attend JuCos because their academics are subpar. They typically won't take the right classes to qualify to get accepted at Michigan.

SpikeFan2016

Just to let you know, a semester out of state at U of M is much more than $12,000.

Tuition is about $21,000 per semester out of state and living in the dorms would cost about $5,000 for a semester. That doesn't include costs of transportation to and from school as well as books. Out of state is a lot.

It's more like $26,000 when all is said and done to grayshirt for a semester.

Now, if you are from an upper class or upper middle class family and that's the only semester that you have to pay for college (the other 7 will be on scholarship) that's not too bad considering most of those families will have some savings for college if they were planning on sending their children before they knew about their athletic ability. But it's still a lot.

Geez I just looked up Artavis Scott who was a guy hoke was going for at wr in the 2014 class - 80+ catches as a true freshman, nearly 80 as a sophomore.  Damn.

EGD

December 9th, 2015 at 11:54 AM ^

Yeah, Scott was part of that trio of guys from Tarpon Springs HS in Florida that M was after.  The other two guys were George Campbell and Mason Cole.  Scott and Cole are obviously off to great college careers already; Campbell hasn't done anything yet  but there is plenty of time left and he's 6'5" and runs under 4.4.

alum96

December 9th, 2015 at 12:32 PM ^

Yep at one point I think we had Campbell and Cole committed at same time before Campbell decommitted.  He was the one with the shaky hands.  Of course the 2 lower rated one of those 3 made big impacts early.

But that is amazing production for a freshman and why I am concerned none of our 2014 wrs are producing at least 25-30 catches.

MGoStrength

December 9th, 2015 at 7:14 PM ^

We have struggled at the offensive skill positions position lately.  We used to have so many great RBs and WRs in the 90's through the mid 2000s.  It's frustrating that Harris hasn't done anything yet and that Cole is apparently a safety now.  Hawkins and Mitchell look solid, but it doesn't sound like either of them are big time playmakers either.  I'm not sure where that will come from.  I'm a little surprised Bunting hasn't switched to WR and/or gotten more snaps.  He seems like he'd be a matchup problem.  But, I'm with you.  I don't know where our offensive production will come from against the better defenses we play like OSU.  We some big time WRs!

Elwood

December 9th, 2015 at 10:35 PM ^

Way too early to write off Hawkins (probably a Poseidon type) and Mitchell (tons of potential for Mitchell). Also, the light has gone on for Chesson and Darboh is usually solid.

I acknowledge there's a drop off after our top two WRs, but we can't dismiss two guys who haven't played yet.

EGD

December 10th, 2015 at 10:01 AM ^

I am definitely looking forward to finally seeing a Poseidon-type receiver at Michigan. The focus on speed, height, hands, blocking ability, and other mundane attributes is misplaced when there are prospects available who wield tridents and can conjure tsunamis.

MGoStrength

December 12th, 2015 at 3:34 PM ^

I'm not writing them off, but based on their scouting reports they don't seem like a big play type of player like a David Terrell, Bralon Edwards, Mario Manningham, Devin Funchess, etc.  They seem more like a solid #2 WR type of guy, ala Jason Avant or Darboh.

Chesson has definately taken some strides this year and I hope he continues to do so.  He certainly has speed.  And, there's some evidence to believe he will continue to improve.  But, I still don't see the ball skills or route running of an elite WR.  If he has the chance he almost always catches the ball with his body and not his hands.  That's fine for most of our games, but when we play better DBs I think he will struggle a litlte.

Ali G Bomaye

December 9th, 2015 at 2:57 PM ^

I never got the love for Campbell.  He seems like he's a physical freak, but he has no idea how to play football.  It seemed like he was subpar at everything except running fast.  That counts for something, obviously, but I'm not surprised that he hasn't put up big numbers yet.

BlueinOK

December 9th, 2015 at 1:03 PM ^

I don't think you understand what a grayshirt means. It means that those guys aren't going to enroll until the spring semester and they will be on scholarship at that time. They won't have to worry about tuition at all.

They can't enroll fulltime in the fall because that would start their 5-year clock.

alum96

December 9th, 2015 at 1:30 PM ^

Ok I assumed the scholarship would kick in the following fall, and they enroll in January.

So in this case they enroll Jan 2017 and scholarship kicks in fall 2017.

So you are saying the scholarship kicks in, in January 2017?

If so then yes moot.  The only cost would be whatever tuition it costs at WCCC or similar.
