Hockey Coaching Candidates Part 1

Submitted by Canadian on

I want to start of by saying I want Mel Pearson as much as the next guy but I am not certain that Mel is absolutely going to leave Michigan Tech. I also would welcome Red Berenson back if he ants to come back as I think he more than deserves to go out on his own terms. The names that I've picked to include are all NCAA Division 1 Head Coaches as I think Red's replacement needs to have some experience under his belt.

Chris Bergeron, Bowling Green Falcons
Age: 45
Alma Mater: Miami University
Head Coaching Record: 80-99-25
First year coaching: 2000-01
First year as Head Coach: 2010-11
Current Record: 22-13-6

Bergeron played 7 seasons of minor league hockey before returning to his alma mater, Miami University, to be part of Enrico Blasi’s staff for the 2000-01 season (Blasi’s 2nd as Head Coach) and stayed on that staff for 10 seasons. Bergeron decided to take on a daunting task by taking over the Bowling Green State University Head Coaching job. In the five years before Bergeron took on the BGSU gig the Falcons had a combined record of 52-111-13; and the five seasons since 80-99-25. While those numbers aren’t mind blowing it is worth noting that in each of his first five seasons at BGSU the Falcons win totals have increased over the previous season.

Chris Bergeron!

He's done a fantastic job turning around a longtime doormat of a program, and is still pretty young.

I think he would be a great hire!

After reading through all three parts, to me, we have Mel Pearson, and then a short list of young candidates. Leaman, Bennett, and Bergeron in that order are my preference. I like that Leaman cut his teeth at Maine when they were still a national power and recruiting the high level skill hockey guys instead of the 23-24 yr olds. I'd have to dig into Bergeron's record and history more to see what his recruiting has looked like at BG.

I also think that Gadowski would be an absolute home run of a hire, but that there's no way we're prying him from Penn St. Blasi and Jackson aren't leaving their current digs.

No love for Danton Cole, though? I'd think he'd be a short list of guys that Manuel would talk to, considering he's got the local, recruting, and NTDP ties, and has a track record of a successful in-game coach at a high level. The Sparty connection is there however, and in conversations I've had with Jeremy Dewer from the MSU Hockey blog, he thinks that *if* Anastos gets canned this year, Cole would be their #1 target.

Red Berenson: Depends on how we finish the season out. If we lose against psu tomorrow and early in the tournament then I think it's time to make the make the change. You can't just bring him back for 10 if you've got seats to fill.
