Film Analysis Ep 1.2 - MTSU - Negative Offensive Plays

Submitted by FanNamedOzzy on September 6th, 2019 at 1:19 PM

Back for episode 1.2, reviewing the negative plays from Michigan's offense against MTSU. Most of these were one of two things:

  • Patterson missing a dude
  • Missed pick-ups between Mayfield / Onwenu

So, seems like the right side of the OL still needs to get some communication down. Mayfield didn't seem entirely too comfortable and Onwenu had a few plays where he could have done better. Anyways, only 7 plays in this episode. I'm hoping next week I'll have 2 10-play episodes and then a live-stream for a 3rd episode.

As always, leave any constructive criticism / questions / additional things I missed in the comments and I'll take them into account for the next video.

I do realize the keyboard / mouse were quite loud for 1.1 and parts of 1.2, so I'm going to see what I can do to cut down on that. Enjoy!

1.2.1 - Q1 14:52 - 1st & 10 - UM27 - Patterson Fumble

  • Not how you want to start a game. Patterson doesn’t like what he sees, decides to take off from a decent pocket. Hard to say if he had any options downfield. Maybe had Bell on the snag route? Gotta protect that ball, man.

1.2.2 - Q1 4:17 - 1st & 10 - MTSU31 - 3 yard run by Turner

  • Inside zone with a fake jet sweep to McCaffrey. Big miss from Onwenu (possibly Mayfield, as well?) on a backside block. This forces Turner off of his desired path, which dooms this play. All other blocks executed well.

1.2.3 - Q1 3:32 - 2nd & 12 - MTSU33 - 1 yard screen to DCaff

  • Similar action from last play, this time the fake is to Turner. Mayfield fails to work downfield on his block for the screen. Otherwise blocked well, timing and positioning was just off from the RT.

1.2.4 - Q1 2:52 - 3rd & 11 - MTSU32 - 10 yard sack

  • Haskins does a poor job in pass protection, allowing the LB an easy path to Patterson. Other stunt action from the DL would have allowed Patterson to escape if not for that failed pickup.

1.2.5 - Q2 1:18 - 3rd & 10 - MTSU37 - 5 yard sack

  • Mayfield gets beat on the edge. Bredeson could have done better against a stunt, as well. Gets out of position, which doesn’t allow Ruiz to shift to looping DT. Not enough time to get the ball out. Woof.

I didn't have time for 1.2.6 & 1.2.7. If you read through these, my bad. I'll be better prepared next week!

Poor Ronnie Bell, had tough chances all day, then like in play 7 wide open and Shea looks elsewhere. Look out for him vs army.

Love the reviews oz.

How about some M defense reviews.
