Livers Out Indefinitely Comment Count

Brian March 13th, 2021 at 10:42 AM

Rumors about this started flying last night and now they've been confirmed:

…senior guard/forward Isaiah Livers will be out indefinitely after an MRI following yesterday's Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal game against Maryland revealed a stress injury to his right foot. Livers will wear a protective boot while he immediately begins rehabbing.

A stress injury doesn't sound good. There have been rumors that Livers is done for the season. Brendan Quinn got some pushback on that when he talked to someone inside the program:

It's possible he'd try to play through it for the NCAA tournament. If that's possible, and how effective he could be, are unknowns.

If Michigan looks bad today with Livers out, and Michigan can't give the Committee a reassurance that he will be back, not sure the Committee will still give them a #1 seed -- could bump them down like Cincy and Kenyon Martin 99-00'.

I doubt it

They essentially played the entire game yesterday without his contributions and won handily. Losing badly to a 2 seed in a meaningless tournament doesn't show that the team is helpless without Isaiah

Martin was national player of the year on a mid major team, Livers is good but not the same caliber of loss to the team

The 4 is probably the best position for Michigan to lose someone at least. I think its really hard to break out and shine when you're playing Johns role. Maybe 10mpg split between two positions. Ive thought for awhile that Johns is a guy that if he was getting 25mpg you would really see blossom. I feel like confidence and consistency are his biggest issue as he has the skill and athleticism to provide a lot.

I would correct that to there is not enough quality depth on this roster, not that there is no quality depth.  No injuries, this team goes a legitimate 7 deep with Brown and Davis.   The challenge is that we very much do not go 8 deep.   Once we lose any starter, and Brown has to step in the starting rotation, we have only one quality bench player in Davis and no strong backups at the 1-4.  Given the positional versatility we have at two through four, if any one of Johns, Jackson or Williams were ready for a solid 20 minutes a game we would be in much better shape.   We need a 7 man rotation without Livers, unfortunately what we have is a 6 man rotation.

Well, Michigan basketball and March Madness stories are forever intertwined. Obviously a huge blow, but also a chance to go down in history given the circumstances

Let's see how it plays out

Johns had some great minutes last game.

His issue, imo, is that he has some mental lapses on the court... during the MSU game, I remember Franz angerly pointing to a spot on the floor where Johns was supposed to be not where he had set up.

If he can get dialed into the game plan he can play good minutes. Consistency has always been his biggest challenge.

If Livers is indeed out for the tourney, we're all going to have to hope that Johns has a 6 game epiphany

Hopefully he will be back in the tournament. But I think Johns gets better the more he plays, so hopefully we see the best version of Johns.
Also in the tournament I expect Dickenson to feast, especially the first weekend. It will be more like the OOC games where these teams don’t have anyone to matchup on him. The B1G has the best 5s in the country, basically no other teams have that.

Those 2 factors give me hope they can still make a run.
