Ohio Came To Bury Michigan, All Wrapped In Maize And Blue
The Words Were Said, The Prayers Were Read And Everybody Cried
But When They Closed The Coffin, There Was Someone Else Inside!
The Bucks Came To Bury The Wolverines – But Michigan Wasn’t Dead,
And When The Game Was Over, It Was Someone Else Instead.
Twenty-Two Michigan Wolverines Put On The Gloves Of Gray,
And As Cavender Played “The Victors”, They Laid Woody Hayes Away!”

"I have never seen anything like this in all my 40 years of covering Michigan football. . . . Look at the crowd! You cannot believe it! . . . You're listening to it. I hope you can hear me – because I've never been so happy in all my cotton-picking 59 years! I have seen -- I have broadcast 347 ball games. I've never had one like this. . . . Meeeshigan wins, 27 to 21. They aren’t even going to try the extra point. Who cares? Who gives a damn?"

This was my first game at Michigan stadium. Obviously I didn't hear it live but I have listened to the rebroadcast of that play a thousand times. It never gets old.

Someone beat me to the Anthony Carter/John Wangler quote. So I'll go with this one...
"Seven children! That's right, folks. I have seven children! No, I'm not Catholic, just careless."

...but from all the audio from his era that I've heard, I wish we still had someone with his love for Michigan/personality/willingness to be caustic to our rivals.
I'm sure we could get that kind of personality, but in this corporate PC world we live in, I sure it wouldn't fly anymore.
Disclaimer: This post is not meant as a dig to Beckman and Brando. Just an ode to a bygone era.

You know, there runneth through core... there runneth through core of all Michigan activities both on and off this campus a certain intangible thing. We call it the great Michigan spirit. Maybe you can relate to it if I tell you it's that atmosphere that permeates that stadium out there every Saturday afternoon in the fall, when over a hundred thousand fans patiently wait to see whether Bo Schembechler's going to continue his winning ways.
You know what I mean, you can feel the excitement, the tension, the charisma that surrounds that stadium every Saturday afternoon. Especially... especially, ten to fourteen minutes before kickoff, when a hush settles over that staidum, and we all anxiously wait for that simple four-word command to emenate out of the PA system. I can hear it now. BAND, TAKE THE FIELD! And out of that eastern tunnel pour two hundred and fifteen well-drilled, well-disciplined Michigan bandsmen. They pour over the eastern sideline, they form the big Block M, and they play the greatest college fight song ever written, the Michigan Victors!
That's when the chills go up and down your spine, you get goosepimples all over, your blood turns Maize and Blue, and everybody out there becomes part of the winningest tradition in the history of Big Ten football!

It is never a bad thing to repost the links to these famous moments and sound bites even though they are in other places around this blog.......
Meanwhile, one of my favorite quotes: "Running down the sidelines like a penguin with a hot herring in his cumberbun!"

This seems like a perfect opportunity to ask if anybody has a link to a clip I used to hear on the radio, but never had much context for: it sounds as though OSU tore down the ("coveted"?) M Club banner, and Ufer goes crazy and screams something about "the audacity, the unmitigated gall".
So, uh, anybody got context/link? Thanks!

I posted my reply (see below) before seeing this question. I have this audio somewhere and I will try to dig it up for you.

Watching the television with the sound turned off, because no one did IT as good as Ufer. Leach was the peach, but Ufe was the guts and glue of the Maize and Blue.

"Here they come: Hare, Middleton, and the Buckeyes... and they're tearing down Michigan's coveted M-Club banner! They will meet a dastardly fate here for that! There isn't a Michigan Man who wouldn't like go out and scalp those Buckeyes right now. They had the audacity, the unmitigated gall, to tear down the coveted M that Michigan's going to run out from under! But the M-men will prevail because they're getting the banner back up again. And here they come! The maize and blue! Take it away 105,000 fans!"

5-4-3-2-1 Touchdown
This old man's got maize and blue spots again
The whirling dervish Gordie Bell
He could run for 15 minutes inside a phone booth and never even touch the sides
Huckleby deep, Davis close and Ricky Leach under center
That's all there is, there isn't any more
