Workout Warriors
From Rittenberg's article on ESPN about the top performers in the weight room in the Big Ten.
Michigan DT Mike Martin 6-2, 294, Jr., Redford, Mich.
- Bench-presses 505 pounds, squats 700 pounds
- Power cleans 430 pounds, hang cleans 475 pounds
- Runs the 40-yard dash in 4.9 seconds
- Strength coach Mike Barwis says: "Mike is an absolute warrior. He has a never quit attitude and is a natural born leader. He is one of the most impressive physical specimens I have ever seen."
Michigan C David Molk 6-2, 270, Jr., Lemont, Ill.
- Bench-presses 490 pounds, squats 660 pounds
- Power cleans 420 pounds, hang cleans 440 pounds
- Runs the 40-yard dash in 4.9 seconds
- Strength coach Mike Barwis says: "Dave is an outstanding worker and a natural athlete. He is one of the most naturally explosive linemen I have ever trained."
Both will be first team Big Ten this year. book it.
And on top of that, they'll share the Heisman.
Is the /sarcasm tag necessary? Ok, in that case: /sarcasm
...their work ethic is contagious.
What happens when an unstoppable force meets an unmovable object?
While I agree that MM is an unstoppable force, I don't think Molk is an unmovable object. After all, he does have to move his arms and legs a bit while he's pancaking opposing NTs.
I guess i just don't understand why they built the LHC then... they should just have the scientists watch this collision
When they line up in practice, those are Higgs bosons you're seeing. Perhaps they can impart mass on the Forcieron particle.
Great Scott! The resulting anti-matter they'll create upon collision will destroy the Earth!
...gotta give,
Somethin's gotta give...
Somethin's gotta give...
is his knee.
These guys are two of the many reasons I think RR will get a 2011 season barring a complete meltdown this year: if they stay healthy, they are going to be absolute beasts in their senior year.
but that makes his number all the more impressive. To maintain that level of strength throughout his rehab process is amazing to me! Of the players listed, he lifts 2nd most on bench and squat, with Martin coming in at 1st in both. To squat as much as he does after his leg injury is very impressive!
I'm going to venture a guess that if he squats 660 and cleans 400+ then his knee is just fine.
If Mike Martin is the Hulk, then what is Molk? The Thing? Colossus?
Sounds like somebody's been hanging around Freddie Jax, huh? Any use of a superlative plus "ever" to describe a player makes it the most sincere and convincing quote ever.
The most sincere and convincing quote/word ever must be tremendous. It speaks volumes about whom ever or what ever the person is talking about. It's the pinnacle of expressive words.
i was thinkin the same thing.
I assume Barwis is not making up the compliment. His numbers are unbelievable, Plus he said "one of", Jackson just goes ahead and labels a new player each year the straight-up "best he's ever seen".
As in, today is one of the best days of my life. So was yesterday. Tomorrow will be too, if I make it.
Those numbers are so big it doesn't even register in my brain what lifting that much could possibly be like. Can't wait to see MM tossing linemen aside and mauling QBs.
Holy hell. His arms are about the size of my waist.
to the state grad who works next to me (we're in Lansing) and he says "Holy Hell, looks like a second chest"
He has had an additional year under Barwis since the pic was taken
"I must break you."
Did anyone here ever actually try to max out bench pressing? I busted my ass for almost 6 months and maxed at 265. These guys are nearly doubling that amount of weight...a little hard to wrap my head around just how powerful these guys must be. PLEASE STAY HEALTHY GENTLEMEN.
Yes. Cosign. That shit is pretty badass, their numbers. I maxed at 220 in high schoo weighing 170, which isn't all that great. The highest guy on our football team during my 4 years in h.s. did 390.
But, really, although bench press is probably the best single upper-body lift, I'd say for football, the squat numbers are more important. And more impressive. Ridiculously impressive, actually.
Im 6'4" and about 225-230 lbs. I maintain my fitness pretty well considering I work over 60hrs/week. I am also pretty strong, but while I lift weights regularly, I have never really tried to max out on anything. This week a tried a couple things for the first time:
1. bench press max out. I got up 305 lbs. I couldn't believe it, I was pumped!
2. how many reps of 225lbs can I do. I got up 17, which is about as good as the NFL rookie WR.
I can't even imagine putting up the numbers those guys do. It is really quite amazing. I wonder how they stack up against other schools.
3 reps. I weighed 190-195 at the time. Was lifting just to maintain weight during the lacrosse season.
The rule i remember was if you can rep your weight you're doing pretty well. What these guys are doing is just unreal
For those of you who haven't seen someone squat upwards of 700lbs it is a pretty awesome sight. Not only is the dude squating that much weight, but the bar actually bends quite a bit with so many plates on it and you would swear it is going to bust.
There was a guy I played with in college that could squat that much and it was unbelievable to witness.
Sure, we had to max out in high school a couple times a year during our quarterly numbers. Senior year, weighing 225, I had a max of 325. That has dropped significantly with my age. I'd venture a guess of around 280. I still work out with a buddy of mine who was a DL for Miami (OH). I squat, but with my bad back, a max out would probably cripple me.
...strength tests for these two gents will be very interesting to watch.
I hope not from benching too much.
One of the locks on the gates to the Big House was broken, so Martin gave it a nudge with his shoulder to pop it open.
WOW I knew Mike Martin was a beast, But that just put him on a whole other level. Thats just insane. He really is the Hulk or should we say the Hulk is really Mike Martin.
And Molk, i did not relize he was that strong either. Plus a 4.9 40 time wow. can any one say 1st round pick.
I hope for both in 2011 not 2010. Please stay for your senior years DM/MM.
Martin SMASH! That is all.
