Meta: If you could change 1 thing about MGoBlog, what would it be?
The subject matter could be less depressing.
:)
when i click a link that takes me to another page it opens that link in a new window or tab instead of taking me away from mgoblog
I agree.
Also, bonus tip: if you're using a mouse with a scroll wheel, you can click the wheel when you're hovering over a link and it opens it in a new tab. I just learned of this shortcut a couple months ago and it has revolutionized my browsing experience...
Also, you can go with the right click -> open in new tab.
Or control + click (Windows) or command/Apple + click (OSX).
That's a great idea! But in the mean time just move your cusor over the link, right click, then select: open in new tab or open in new window.
Added to my list of things to work on.
Use firefox and get the Firegestures extension. Right click the link and drag up - opens in a new page. Works like a charm. To close the page, right click and drag down anywhere on the page. Changed my life.
You have to actually READ the front page before you can move on to the MGoBoard and post a new forum topic.
to that.
content it's a nice fantasy. That way there would be less " star rankings don't matter-- Mike Hart and Pat White were three star guys, and look how they turned out."
maybe the three star mafia membership could be capped at 4119 points?
would have to submit information the first of each month.
YES...YES...that would make me happy.
Correct or not...he is quite entertaining.
can it be wired right into my brain so i can access it without one of these damn computers?
if not, how about embedded video player capability?
... in real life. That is, life outside MgoBlog.
That chick does not look 18 or older to me.
Good thing that the age of consent in Michigan is 16.
Too bad MGoBlog is on the internet and thus would be federally regulated making the age of consent 18.
Buzzkill...
Good thing that what most people want to do with them can't happen on the internet and there would be regulated by whichever state they are in (Anyone in Michigan is obviously fantacizing that they are in Michigan).
Considering that this is a website that often drools over the measurements (height, weight, fake 40 times, etc.) and shirtless photos of teenage boys, worrying about the age of those girls is probably the least of our problems.
Are they even 18? I don't know if I should feel dirty or not for finding them hot.
Just park your van in front of the nearest junior high and crank up one of the Jonas brothers latest hits...
Dump a bucket of glitter over yourself
MGoPedophile?
is what I would eliminate. too many people post tangential, unfunny crap just to get points......and I will get negged for pointing it out.
More use of the Banhammer. I like the content, but the noise gets overwhelming sometimes.
MGoBlog is great, except for the people who post on it.
I'm pretty sure non-troll guys that would contribute do not, since for whatever reason some posts get jumped on by a small mob. I'm not criticizing that necessarily--debate is good, I just wish that there would be even more debate and discussion. There is a consensus on most issues here that could do with more discussion IMO.
See: Haloscan era...
Think "Wild West of Lloyd bashing"
I've been lurking a long time, and there are a lot more, Look-at-me-I-have-an-opinion type posts. I think in finance they call it noise trading, and you really have to distill out the quality posts now in a way that wasn't necessary in the past. That, and the increased posting moves the good board topics off the front page, which leads to double posts and the predictable complaints. And yes, I realize the irony between my being a new-ish poster and the substance of this post. Oh well.
Nevertheless, I think more eyes means more money for our benevolent leader, so he's got that going for him, which is nice.
/ old-man rant.
although I think that the overall volume of quality content is actually much higher. While there is a level of redundancy Brian has recruited many interesting regular voices (Tim, Tom VH , etc.) that tend to skew the content quality on the plus side.
I think auto-yelling about double posting is a complete waste of time, myself.
Ahhhh-you are the "DOWN IN FRONT!" guy.
Most of my problems comes from user error more than anything else. Labelling categories right is a big pet peeve. Pro sports are other unless you can specifically tie it to Michigan/Michigan alumni. That means random Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons, other pro team that has no value to Michigan, to be listed at "other".
The baseball tag one is the only one I'm truly worried about, as I link that one out in the college baseball blog-o-sphere.
two tabs in particular:
1) State of Michigan sports (Tigers, Red Wings, Lions, Pistons.)
2) All other non-UM, non-State of Michigan Sports (Bulls, LeBron, World Cup, MLB, NFL, NBA.)
These are the two most frequest OT categories, and to the degree this is a sports website, I think they would keep MGoBoard from getting so cluttered. If they were segregated/ghetto-ized elsewhere then the main list of posts, you would be able to see relevant posts quickly and easily.
Or just make a new tab/division of the Mgoboard for off topic. Make it like the difference between Diaries and the Mgoboard right now. Anybody that posts something in the Mgoboard that is stupidly off topic gets some instant justic applied.
I don't hate on all, or even most of the OT threads, but they push meaningful Michigan related content off the first couple of pages of the Mgoboard within 48 hours. if people want to talk about OT stuff just give them their own board.
I sometimes post in off-topic threads in areas I have some expertise or interest, but ignore all the others. I pretty much read all Michigan-related threads. It sucks when there are 19 off-topic threads pushing the Michigan content down and out.
An OT forum would be great, though there should be an easy-to-find, clear, and evolving delineation of the rules for what is on-topic. Everything else is off-topic, but still no politics.
but it would be an absolute nightmare to keep up with, monitor, moderate and avoid reposts. not to mention people who would refuse to post in the proper area, etc.
Some of the reader comments/content involves considerable effort or insight to produce. Such efforts make this site worthwhile reading. However, we can only +1 those contributors while we +1 guys who post pictures of hot chicks kissing . . . Nevermind, WTF am I thinking!
It hasn't been too bad lately, but it's ridiculous when something gets posted 3-4 times, especially when the same topic is on the front page. People also mess up the OT on thread titles. I wouldn't change anything Brian was doing, just some of the things posters do.
It would be cool to have a member of the coaching staff give regular inputs on things like recruiting, scouting, post game analysis, etc. Until then, Magnus does a pretty good job.
MOBILE SITE.
Please. Please! Pretty-please? Pretty-please with a cherry on top of those banner chicks up above?
Front page and MGoBoard only so I can get a quick fix during piano recitals, etc.
But I suspect that if this was easy to do it would already have happened.
That was a goal this off season. No word on it's progress. I know some other things have been keeping Brian busy (hockey's run, HTTV, World Cup, APR, Jihads, etc).
There is an iPhone site in the works. Android and more general sites are on my list but will not happen before 2011.
Floating layout.
The character of the fixed width is nice, but I often ache for the middle section to span the page.
Check out the "Stylish" extension for firefox, it does essentially what you're looking for. Somebody already wrote a pretty good script for MGoBlog.
