OT: Ale to the Victors - First Pour
Well here is the first pour of "Ale to the Victors". It came out suprisingly well for the first batch. I can best describe it as a cross between Blue Moon and Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat. The first cup was a little bitter, which is common because there is always a small amount of sediment on the bottom of the keg. The 2nd glass was much better. I'll probably use a different type of hops on the second batch. Overall I would have to say that I was very pleased! Go Blue!!
May we be singing "Ale to the Victors!" (or something quite similar) all fall.
As a fellow home brewer, congratulations on your brew. She's a beauty, albeit a bit top heavy, but we all like a little extra up there, right (nudge nudge, wink wink)? For those thinking of home brewing: Brewing as a hobby or sport will never fail you. You'll occasionally make a "bad" batch, but at the cost of Schlitz, it really isn't that bad is it?
Good work Chewer D and I look forward to more brew reports.
this beer tasting to benefit a pair of UofM scholarships at Jolly Pumpkin on August 14th!!!
Might be fun to see the faces behind these avatars.
Here's the link for ticket info http://www.kines.umich.edu/alumni/beer_tasting.pdf
I'll be there with my ugly mug.
We need to get an MGoBlog pint glass.
Both that you'll be there to support the scholarships AND the ide of the MGoBlog pint glass!!
Where are you Brian. Can the Underground Printing boys do glassware?
I'll be there too.
I'm terribly afraid of skeletons.
All of you all will have to wear nametags with your MGoBlog names so we can identify you. That is unless you value your anonymnity.
Exactly! I brewed a vanilla stout last fall. I was disappointed with the amount of head. I think I used too much lactose in my wort. I also used too much vanilla in the primary fermenter (i literally threw in two vanilla beans).
It's easier to add more later than it is to remove it.
that a "bad" homebrew batch is still not really that bad. I've made about 30 brews, and had 2 I wouldn't serve to guests, but I still drank them eventually (citrus wheat that was too bitter and a red ale that was bottled too early making "bottle bombs" when they were opened).
Strong work on the ale, Chewer D. It looks great.
You should enter into next year's Grizzly Peak homebrewing competition
http://www.annarbor.com/entertainment/food-drink/homebrew-neophyte-wins-grizzly-peak-competition/
How can you lose? Best of Luck on your creation!
Dude- I have no idea who you are, but I still wish I was hanging out on your porch sampling your most killer homebrew. We could smoke cigars and be best friends forever.
Or you could pour my sorry ass in to a cab, say "Go Blue" and wish we'd never met.
Your call.
Should I post a pic of my humidor too?
I will bring you copious riches from the Dominican and other places not named Cuba.
Right on..
Go Blue.
But, I also brew (therefore I am) and I am planning on being at the Jolly Pumpkin on August 14 with my son. If there is any interest, I will bring a few cigars and we could hang out for a while.
My humidor includes:
CAO Gold Torpedos - 6 yrs old
CAO Black Torpedos - 2 yrs old
Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 Torpedos = 5 yrs old
Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 Torpedos - 4 yrs old
Rocky Patel Vintage 1999 Churchill - 2 yrs old
Rock Patel Java Robusto - 3 yrs old
(Yeah, I'm a Patel fan)
And a nice variety of Arturo Fuente, Padron and Partagas.
Any takers - just post on and we'll figure it out from there.
But can't smoke 'em inside. Have to go on the sidewalk. No smoking law isn't there.
as well as Macanudo and Churchhill. You have more discriminating tastes than I for sure, but any good, large ring Maduro is ok by me.
This is what I had last time I cleaned my humidor..
best thread ever - homebrew that devolved into fine cigars. Love the right side of the pic.
The first time I ever had one, ONE, and it was a pretty cheap one (IE, not bad, but definitely not good), I realized that night, lying in bed that I wanted another. It took three months for the urge to go away. I have WAYYYY too addictive of a personality.
It probably took about 3 months to get the "what cat just shit in my mouth?" taste out, too. There are reasons that there are cheap cigars, after all.
it would taste something like a cross between a Total F'n Victory with a hint of Roses, but I guess a hybrid of Blue Moon and Leiney isn't too shabby.
any Leinie offering will get completely ass-pounded on a serious beer board, yet they're universally well-liked by the proletariat.
Gimme another Sunset bitch.
I'm really hoping that many of you can join me for a beer on the golf course @ the opener. I'm only bringing 10 Gal. worth, so get there early!
I see Ale to the Victors.....and it looks glorious!
EDIT: And sign me up for the business meeting on the golf course
As a big fan of wheat beers, particularly Blue Moon, (haven't tried the Sunset Wheat but you've convinced me to pick up a 6-pack to try) my hat is off to you.
I've never tried home brewing. My neighbor brewed his first batches over the past year to pretty good success. Have you ever used the kits, or are you largely going to supply stores and buying the ingredients separately?
That's why I don't like sunset wheat. I think it takes like shit. If I wanted fruity pebbles in my beer I'd pour some shitty beer into a bowl of fruity pebbles and have at it.
If you like wheat beer try these:
Hacker Pshorr Weiss
Weinstephaner
You can thank me later!
Add these to your list:
- Franziskaner
- Bell's Oberon
- Hegel's Hefeweissen (my home brew)
Why am I so thirsty when I drank so much last night?
Don't add Oberon to your list. It's not a good beer. Bell's consistency is terrible with that product.
Hacker Pshorr Weiss Weinstephaner
Yes. Weihenstephaner is my favorite. Hacker Pschorr and Franziskaner are good too. I "studied" abroad in Germany 4 years ago (can you figure out why?), which is where my love of Hefeweizen started.
Ideally you want to buy a kit from a place that has high turnover. Old malt extract will give you off flavors.
Kudos on a great looking and I'm sure great tasting creation! A good friend of mine who is also a home brewer makes some great stuff that I enjoy sampling whenever I'm at his place. He's also a UM fan and football season ticket holder, so you have at least one (I'm sure others, too) kindred spirit out there. Would love to sample Ale to the Victors, but I will at least pay homage to it next time I'm over at my friend's house. Cheers, and Go Blue!
Good looking pour sir! Good, cloudy body with good color and a thick, solid looking head. Shit, I'll drink this with you anytime. Looks like a great beer for the summer.
Go with a saison next
Looks delicious and If it tastes like a mix between the two beers you mention, it must be. Damn I wish I was going to be in Ann Arbor for the opener to try it. For all those who will, enjoy. Go Blue!
That looks scrumptdiddlyumptious. You might have just turned me on to a new hobby.
Beer boner.
And I will be taking you up on your offer before the first game.
Congratulations again, let us know when and where so we can do this!
or you will end up a Victors Vagrant.
Might be able to help you there...
Get on it...
I'm planning on getting at least 2 more batches done before the opener. Hopefully everyone will enjoy it.
Let me know details. I will bring some of mine in trade. And cigars.
As soon as the game gets closer I will give details. All I know is that we'll be on the golf course.
UPDATE: "Ale to the Victors" contains alcohol.. My brother and I found this out yesterday...
