attendance is down because the game is not healthy for the players, not representative of the school and not in touch with reality. There are trends the game is flagrantly ignoring to the detriment of young people's lives. The dinosaurs can have their say but the elephants are ruling the day.
It's not about the hot dogs.

Plenty of people still watch boxing and MMA has become very popular over the last couple decades. I'd say the vast majority of people don't have two fucks to give about player safety.
Sure, they won't let their own kids play, but CTE and whatever else isn't stopping people from watching. The cost of games and a lousy stadium experience is to blame for lower attendance.

You look at the gloves on the MMA fighters, and the amount of kicks, and I wonder what MMA CTE is going to look like in 10 years. Even the NFL still makes big money from viewership, from what I've seen; and they stonewalled the CTE evidence.

...but I'll put this out there as something to think about. In the last 20 or so years, life has gotten more comfortable and convenient if you're in the middle to upper middle classes. Office workers dress more casually, pizza can be ordered online and delivered with a couple hits of a button, and technology in general has made a lot of things more convenient. We spend a lot less time than we used to being physically uncomfortable and standing in lines. Has that mentality made people less eager to sit on hard benches for 4 hours?

Good thought. Maybe.

Ridiculous ticket prices, parking hassles, advances in television technology, all going to the games less attractive given everything held constant.
Eventually, game days will only be for the wealthy, and there's less of them compared to regular people.

We are a nation of people who are addicted to their cell phones, have short attention spans and more entertainment choices for our disposable income.
Also, most regular season games are not important to the quest for a national championship.
NCAA FB has catered to TV schedules, conference championships, and the BCS playoffs at the expense of the average fan going to a regular season game.
As far as UM goes, I dropped my season tickets as prices increased and I still had a small bench to park my rear end on with large and loud people around me. Much better to watch on my flat screen with my food/drink/bathroom and if the game is not exciting, I can flip and watch other games. It's still great to go to the few big games live (home and away) each year but good seats on Stubhub are usually available and less than face value (when you add in lincensing fees).

I only wonder this because it seems like right now, it's the easiest time in our lives to find something else to do on a Saturday if our team sucks. Especially if you think about fans in places where there's plenty of recreational options because of the location. Who knows, I'm just bullshitting and trying to think outside of the box haha
