Insert Maize and Blue Deli vs Zingermans argument. It has been awhile since we've had one.
January 23rd, 2018 at 3:16 PM ^
I've never really understood the argument. It seems pretty easy to me:
- When someone else is paying, Zingerman's.
- When I'm paying, Maize and Blue.

This comment wins the discussion. Finally some common sense analysis we can all use.

I thought Zingermans was the greatest thing is the world when I was in college and right after. But, now as a (ugh I hate using this word, makes me sound like a tool) foodie in Chicago, the deli is a bit overrated. All the stuff they sell (baked goods, condiments, meats, cheeses) are all top-notch but I'd call the sandwiches just good.
The Roadhouse though is still really damn good.

I lived in New York for two years and I can confidently say you couldn't be more wrong.

Is basically store bought meats and cheeses piled high on store bought bread; just because a sandwich is huge doesn't mean it is any good. If you were at the right gas station and in the mood for a sandwich you could basically create anything Maize and Blue offers.
Zingermans is expensive, for sure. That is because they pay their workers a living wage, make almost everything from scratch, and buy from specialty purveyors when they don't make something in house. There is a reason sandwiches at Zingermans are featured on Oprah.
January 23rd, 2018 at 5:47 PM ^
Most restaurants and deli's don't use high-quality, fresh baked bread in their sandwiches. That's one of the big things that sets Zingerman's apart from almost all the other ones I've tried. And their ingredients are high quality. Are they the best value? Impossible for me to say. They price their product for the reason you mentioned and because they can. The place is always busy and they never discount and do little advertising. Sounds like a great business model to me.

Not a knock on Georgia Tech I enjoy watching the triple option but if a kid aspires to play in the NFL being a quarterback in the triple option is probably not going to get you there
January 23rd, 2018 at 2:12 PM ^
Uhhhhhh ya think?
January 23rd, 2018 at 2:14 PM ^
Yep. If you're a triple option QB, you have virtually no shot to make it to the NFL. Even the really elite guys (Tommy Frazier, Scott Frost, Eric Crouch, etc.) don't do anything at the next level.
You basically have to be a WR or dive-back at Georgia Tech if you want to play at the next level.
January 23rd, 2018 at 2:25 PM ^
Again I enjoy watching the triple option but it is basically for teams lacking the talent of their opponents and it's a way of equalizing it because most teams only face it once a year if that

Kid looks like he can take it to the house.
We need some of those.

3 star athlete eh?? Can he play Corner, Maizen?
January 23rd, 2018 at 2:27 PM ^
His 4.67 40 is pretty poor for a kid whose position is just "athlete." I'd rather he went to Georgia Tech.

It is official: https://www.theopening.com/2017-atlanta-results
He finished 35th in his region for 40 time, and doesn't even make the national leaderboard (i.e: he's outside of the top 250). People do get faster, but not significantly. (For example, Jabrill Peppers ran a 4.50 as a recruit and a 4.46 at the combine). With numbers like his and a position change in his future, it's hard to imagine he'll be a significant contributor any time soon.

What's your point? Your original claim had n=0 data points supporting it.
Assuming he plays RB as people are saying, we currently have seven RBs on scholarship for next year, but only five OGs and fourteen OL in total. Why are we taking 3 star RBs when we desperately need depth on the OL?

Others have commented on this in the other thread too but it appears that numbers worked out sometime very recently and Barret is now a take. That could mean a number of things regarding the current roster or remaining recruiting targets.

It means the coaches are going to take 3 RB's this cycle and zero DT's. They literally wiffed on every DT they offered this cycle (Friday, McNeil, Perkins, Sandidge, Thompson, Vincent, and Adimeola) and didn't bother recruiting guys like Christian Barmore, PJ Mustipher, and Austin Fontaine who are all in the B1G footprint.
I actually like Barrett's skill set more than the other two backs in this class. He reminds me of a poor man's Cam Akers who also played quarterback in high school. Josh Newkirk went and saw him play earlier this year and said he's the best player he's seen all year. He's seen guys like Willie Gay, Baron Browning, and Jabrill Peppers all live in the past so he knows what he's looking at talent wise. I'd put Barrett on a list with Schoonmaker, Gemon Green and VanSumeren as guys who I think will outperform their 3 star ranking. I'm intrigued.
All that said the 2018 class is what it is at this point, a class with the fewest number of composite top 100 recruits in 18 years. Compared with what OSU and PSU are putting together that really sucks, but it's not crippling as long as 2019 is a Top 5 class. Lots of work to be done.

Lane Kiffin was on the Dan Patrick Show the day after the national title game and said (and I'm paraphrasing) the reason Nick Saban wins every year is not because he's a great coach it's because he has more talent than everyone else. He said their gameplan against UGA from an X and O's standpoint wasn't all that good but they were able to out talent them at the end of the day.
Harbaugh is a great coach but Michigan has a long way to go talent wise to even be in the same ballpark as an Alabama. That's why it's important to stack recruiting classes and let the players sort it out on the field. I cringe everytime I read "we'll be fine" when we miss on a top recruit. "Fine" hasn't won a B1G championship in 14 years, fine hasn't beaten OSU, and fine won't get us where we want to be: in the CFP.
January 23rd, 2018 at 5:09 PM ^
I agree. It's crazy how all the hires seem to be more recruiter focused than pure coaching ability.
January 23rd, 2018 at 5:26 PM ^
Not crazy at all, recruiting is the lifeblood of your program. Just look at Nick Saban, whose three most recent hires are all coaches in their mid 30's. He's done this for years now, whether it be with Tosh Lupoi, or Mike Locksley, or Mario Cristobal, or Jeremy Pruitt, he simply goes out and gets the best recruiters in the country. There's a reason he went after Chris Partridge.
January 23rd, 2018 at 6:33 PM ^
I would not put Enos in that category. There is another obvious move that it looks like Harbaugh is making, pushing Drevno and Pep to recruit harder. Drevno has been our most prominent recruiter lately.
