Quinn Nordin Best UM kicker since?
After watching Quinn Nordin on Saturday nail those 50 yard Field Goals, I feel really good about our kicker. I was thinking he is probably our best kicker since who? or is he possibly one of the best kickers we have ever had.
Here is a list of kickers from UM football past. Who do you think our best kicker has ever been?
1) Brendan Gibbons
2) Remy Hamilton
3) J.D. Carlson
4) Hayden Epstein
5) Brendan Gibbons
6) Jay Feely
7) Kenny Allen
8) Garrett Rivas
9) Bob Bergeron
10) Ali Haji-Shiek
11) Mike Gillette
12) Kraig Baker
13) Mike Lantry
14) Peter Elezovic
15) Phillip Brabbs

Obviously need more sample size, but the fact he set a record in his first game ever says something. Also those kicks looked effortless and pretty smooth.

How about we tweak the question? Where would you put Nordin's perform for a single game in the pantheon of best single game performances of Michigan kickers?
This lets me talk about my sentimental favorite, Phil Brabbs. Wasn't there one game where he caught a pass on a fake FG, made a crushing tackle on a kickoff and kicked a FG or two? I loved the guy, he was great at all the secondary responsiblities for a place kicker; problem was that he was inconsistent at kicking field goles from mid-range.

But he was our place kicker, punter, kick returner and so on. He had games where he scored every point.

How can any list of Michigan Kickers be complete without Kicking Competency Lopata??
He was not the flashiest - but was dependable, reliable - and Brian gave him a kickass name!

I think he's the best kicker since Kenny Allen.
For real, Kenny Allen had a hell of a career. He went 18-22 in 2015, then followed that up with a 19-23 performance in 2016 (and simultaneously had 51/84 touchbacks on kickoffs - a number that could've been higher but we sometimes chose to kick it short, and averaged 43.7 yards per punt during his career - the best of anyone since 2000 at least).
He finished his career with 15 straight made FGs and he never missed an extra point in his career.

Nordin has played ONE GAME. Stupid to say he's the best kicker since anyone Michigan has had on it's roster. He's definitely got a leg and nailed some long field goals, but he also missed a chip shot.
He's a RS freshman playing in his first game, so I get that it'll happen. But I'm not about to proclaim him to be our best kicker since anyone right now. Way too small a sample size of data. I'd like to see how he does when Harbaugh calls on him to nail a 50 yarder deep in the fourth quarter of the OSU game to put Michigan ahead. I want to see how he performs under real pressure, when the fate of the game is put squarely on his leg.

Remy was alternating with Eric Lovell. That was supposed to be Lovell's kick but the coaches told Remy to go out there at the last minute.

was the purest, straightest, gutsiest, and most satisfying kick in the history of Michigan football. Following an incredible 46 second drive down the field led by Todd Collins.
On Notre Dame's home turf too - great win for us, gut wrenching loss for the Irish. Ended the "Ron Powlus to be first Freshman Heisman winner" discussion too...

It's safe to say he has one of the strongest legs we've ever had. But after he made his 4th field goal my friend said he's a first round draft pick. I said, wait until he misses one. It's all about confidence. As long as he doesn't become a basket case, he could end up being one of the best. Definitely glad he's on our team.
GO BLUE!!

Seriously, he will be the best we have ever had. If Harbs was willing to sleep over at his house, why would anyone think otherwise?

Maybe Nordin will do one of these some day...

Thanks WH. Great video and I remember a lot of those kicks. Do you by chance have a list of all the UM kickers that have made 50+ yard field goals? or do I need to ask WD for this list in one of his super guides.
September 6th, 2017 at 1:46 PM ^
Thanks WH, but I found a lot of missing information in there. They dont have any of the 50 yard field goals from players like Mike Gillette, Bob Bergeron, or older players.

I look at two things in a kicker. One is the accuracy and range in general. A kicker who like Nordin gives the HC an option to consider 50+ FG's verses punting is a big advantage. How many coaches have no choice but to punt when it is 55 away? Even with a limited sample space the fact Nordin even attempted to try a 55 FG implies he is pretty darn good. Everything points despite the limited sample space that he is going to be a threat at long range and that he has accuracy at long range.
However the more important item which could be random and we may not know for much later or perhaps never know depending on how many tight games we play in is how does Nordin do on kicks when everything is on the line. I will always prefer the kicker who always makes the 42 kick at the end of regulation despite a range of 50 than a kicker who is capable of knocking it in from 60 but sometimes will miss from 42.
If you miss a 58 FG in the game there is recourse. If you miss a FG on the last play of the game it is over. Nordin has part one down. Jury is out on part two.
In summary it is only one game. So far so good.

When I initially saw this thread I was on the "its one game and its wayyyyy too early to start this". While the jury is out until there's a meaningful kick where the game is on the line and seeing this kids whole body of work its still discussion worthy.
I'm a Lions fan and when Matt Pratar or Jason Hanson would come onto the field to try anything from 50 yards out, you always feel good about the kick. You always know in the back of your mind that they certainly have the leg for it and more than likely its going through the uprights.
I don't think I've ever felt that confident about a Michigan kicker coming in to kick anything over 45+ yards let alone 50+. RIght now when Nordin trotts onto the field every single Michigan fan knows he can make it.
Its an incredible feeling.

He looks like he has great potential, but at this point, it's just that. Let's see how his career progresses first.
September 6th, 2017 at 12:07 PM ^
Slow down Boner, you are coming out pre-maturely.
But I would like to point out the elevation Nordin's kicks get. When Many kickers keep deep, they have to kick low line drives that often get blocked. Even when kicking from 50+ Nordin kicks with early elevation. It's a thing of beauty.

Hard to compare pre-1989 kickers to post-1989 kickers because of the change in rules diallowing using a tee.

I'm not a huge supporter of piped in music, but I think it's imperative that Wild Thing be blasted either as he is running on the field or after he makes a FG (just prior to The Victors, of course).
