Why would they subject those poor kids to Iowa football? Aren't they going through enough pain already?

Iowa fans debuted the Big Ten’s latest gameday tradition in its season-opening victory over Wyoming on Saturday.
Let’s just say that it’s certain to be a hit.
With the new UI Children’s Hospital opening across the street, and constructed with plenty of windows to provide a view of the field, Iowa fans, all at once, will wave at the young patients and their families watching from the hospital.
Iowa fan Levi Thompson, of Hawkeye Heaven, is credited with creating the idea for the “First Quarter Wave.” Thompson had an anonymous fan write into his Facebook page, which has more than 100,000 likes, about how it would be great to do something for the kids.
“I wanted it to be something that I knew I could pull off with my platform,” Thompson said. “So I came up with a wave after the first quarter of every home game, letting the children know that we are all behind them and putting them in the spotlight.”
Well, the first “First Quarter Wave” was a resounding success.
“This is just the beginning of a great thing,” Thompson said, “and I do believe this will become the best tradition in all of sports.”

As Coldnjl said below, it wasn't clear from the video what the tradition is supposed to be.

What I like best about this is that multiple kids get to participate. Every time I see a single kid running for a touchdown during practice (or whatever) I think to myself that s/he won the lottery and that most others kids don't get to have a similar experience.

Can someone define what the tradition is? I watched the twitter video but there is not sound...do they invite sick kids to games?

if they've only done it once?

There's that dust cannon again.
Wasn't there a thing on Gameday or HBO Real Sports about this last year? Or is there another school that has a similar setup with their hospital?
