This is perfect. The man did just about everything he could to bring Detroit a championship in his last years. Rest easy, Mr. Ilitch.

The best owner is Detroit sports history.
June 7, 1997 is still one of my top moments in sports history. Seeing Yzerman hand the Cup to Mr. Ilitch after the Wings ended a 40 year Cup drought was just awesome. RIP

Was most definitely a great owner for both the Tigers and Red Wings. And a brilliant mind in starting Little Caesars. RIP

Thanks for making the Red Wings AND Tigers relevant again, Mr. I. I sure wish you could have witnessed a Tigers championship on your watch. RIP.

Beat me to it.
Detroit Tigers and Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch, co-founder of Little Caesars, has died at age 87, the Ilitch organization has confirmed.

A giant in Detroit sports. As good an owner as any fan could hope for. He worked and spent and made his teams winners. And I have treasured memories as a result.

BTW the kerfuffle with James Dolan in New York right now only throws Mr. Ilitch's quality into sharper relief. Pretty striking contrast.

Thank you for keeping business and sports relevant in the proud city of Detroit.

When my sister went to school with his daughter Denise. This was about 5 years before Mike bought the Wings. A real genuine guy. Always took a few minutes to talk. No big shot airs about him. RIP.

They must have done a good job keeping a lid on it then. He definitely wasn't doing very well recently. He has arguably the largest role in helping to revive the city of Detroit.

Rip Mr. Ilitch. Always a champion inside and out of sports. You will be missed.

I wish he survived long enough to see the Detroit District in operation. RIP.

Pretty much all you could ask as a sports owner - only complaint by some ever was loyalty had him keep some people around a bit too long but loyalty is a good trait in most cases and lacking in society. When there was no salary cap in hockey the guy spent amazing amounts of money and took over 2 franchises at low points and turned them around big time. Which also marks a great businessman (buy low, sell high). From all accounts a very nice guy too.

They announced back in May that Chris would be taking over. They knew Mike was living on borrowed time. Mike seemed pretty adamant about keeping them in the family.

All the talk about cutting salary was coming from Chris' camp. I'd be surprised if the Illitch family owns the Tigers by Opening Day 2018.

Not only was he a great owner for the Wings and Tigers, but he did so much to revitalize Detroit. And gave to the community in general, in a humble fashion.
Condolences to the Ilitch family.
February 10th, 2017 at 6:50 PM ^
Damn. I'm disappointed he didn't get to see the Tigers win a Series. You could tell he wanted it badly.
February 10th, 2017 at 6:51 PM ^
He did everything in his power to help the Tigers win a WS post 2005, up until then he largely ignored them for a long stretch of time. Still a great owner and a genuinely good man, may he rest in peace.

They really need to reconsider the name for the new arena. His name needs to be in lights on that building.
