GO LIONS!!
January 1st, 2017 at 7:23 PM ^
Ah, young optimism....
Still a must win to get any chance of their SECOND PLAYOFF WIN IN MY LIFETIME - I>E> LESS PLAYOFF WINS THAN TIM TEBOW HAS IN HIS NFL CAREER.
That 6th seed and trip to Dallas if they lose tonight sounds promising!

Lions will go out in the first round.

A loss has the Lions visiting Seattle, a bare 25-23 winner of SF (YTSF) today.
A win has the Lions hosting the Giants.
Not sure which is more winnable. Not sold on the Seahawks.

You'd ALWAYS rather play at home - so that's what the Lions are playing for tonight. A home game vs anyone > better than playing at Seattle.

At least the Lions are normally competitive at home—their playoff road record is a house of horrors.

the Lions could have won that game in the House the lies over Hoffa. Honestly, I am REALLY looking forward to tonights game against the Packers. I'd get a lot of joy out of beating Rodgers and company.

96, your knowledge of how the NFL playoffs work is perfectly apropos for someone as into college football as you are. But to put this in terms you are familiar with:
The Lions are not in the Cowboys swim lane at this time. They'd have to in a WC game first and even then are not guaranteed to play Dallas.
They ARE however likely to lose to GB and back into the playoffs due to Washington losing, but teams sometimes back in and go on to do damage. Seahawks early in Carroll tenure beat defending SB Champ Saints in such a situation, iirc. With a 7-9 record no less.
And the Lions have the same number of playoff wins since 1960 that Tim Tebow has: 1

No running game, little pass rush, lack of playmakers on offense, and mediocre CB play. Somehow they made the playoffs. Kudos to Caldwell.

And Quinn with a lot of good pickups both in draft and "lesser free agents" like some of these safeties. If he can replicate this in year 2 we may have something on our hands. By something on our hands I mean not Russ Thomas.

You must be older than I thought if you know who Russ Thomas is. And how central he was to the Lions' demise back when I was young.
January 1st, 2017 at 7:45 PM ^
You look at the two worst GM's the lions have had...Millen as a Penn St. grad, and Thomas as a OSU grad. What blows my mind is how long Thomas was allowed to stay on as a GM.

The story I've read is that back in the day WC Ford Sr. had a very serious drinking problem, and it was Russ Thomas who helped him get his life back on track. Supposedly Ford was so grateful that Thomas had lifetime tenure, regardless of how the franchise fared.

WCF was forever grateful for thomas basically saving his life.

I think our two coordinators in Jim Bob and Austin deserve way more of the credit than Caldwell. I believe they're both much better coaches and I would really, really hate to see either leave.
