Harbaugh's value to M is probably double his salary or more. Even including the huge loan.

I don't believe that Michigan's defense against decent offensive teams regressed at all.
Honestly, this should, indeed, have been a playoff year. Sometimes, though, the breaks go against you. You lose games you shouldn't. It has happened to all coaches.

Harbaugh is proven as probably the best coach in the business at building a program/team from the ground up.
I'm sure I'll get negged to hell for Harbaugh heresy, but In terms of best in the business, just, no. Saban is about to win his 6th national championship in his last 12 seasons as a college coach. Think about that, he's winning national championships at an every other year rate.
Meyer has 3 national championships and 5 conference championships. Harbaugh has a Super bowl loss, 0 conference championships and 0 national championships. Love Harbaugh and the future is very bright but at some point you have to be rational about it. Argument to be made that he is the 3rd best coach and I'll buy that. But the gaps between 1 and then 2 and then every one else are pretty large. I think he can do it, but Harbaugh still has a lot to prove.
December 4th, 2016 at 6:43 PM ^
Satan failed in the pros and Urbz would never have the guts to try. Because neither can win unless the field is tilted in their direction.
Plus, Harbaugh achieved immediate results. Comparing him in his second year with those who have over 5 years establishing their programs is not sound.
He erased the gap with Sparty in less than one year. And erased the gap with OSU in less than two.

Sparty went 1-8 in B1G, they literally erased the gap with everyone except Rutgers this year.
Agree that we were even with OSU. But then we had a senior experienced team whereas they had a ton of new guys.
Yes, Saban was a failure as a pro coach. We're talking college and Saban is dominating college football right now. There are all sorts of college and NFL coaches whose success didnt translate to one or the other.
Harbaugh does need more time before we really know how successful he is. Saban won a NC in his 4th year at LSU. NC in his 3rd year at AL. And 5th, 6th, 9th and maybe 10th seasons. So...yeah, if we win the NC 4 of the next 7 seasons Harbaugh will match Saban has done at AL in his first 9 years.
Meyer went 9-3 in his 2nd year at BGSU. He went 12-0 in his 2nd year at Utah. He went 13-1 and won a NC in his 2nd year after succeeding Zook at Florida. He went 13-1 w/ another NC in his 4th year. Finished 13-1 and 3rd in his 5th year. He went 12-0 his first year at OSU and 14-1 with a NC in his 3rd year. He is 61-5 at OSU, a record that would require Harbaugh winning the next 41 straight games to match. We can quibble about who inhereted what at various stops etc but those two have exceptional track records of very rapid high level success and national championships. I guess we'll see. But I think you're downplaying how insanely successful those two coaches have been.
December 4th, 2016 at 7:49 PM ^
Meyer and Saban are clearly hugely successful. I cannot argue there.
It all depends on what your opinion is on what makes a great coach. To me, experience and success in pros and college is huge. In the NFL, there is a mandated level playing field. Your coaching chops are truly tested as a result. No over-signing in the NFL.
Harbaugh engineered the biggest point spread win in college football history. His rebuilds are legendary.
Meyer inherited a machine at OSU. Saban over-signed like a mad man to accelerate his rebuild. None of this was available to Harbaugh.
IMO, it is just unfair to directly compare their results with their current teams with Meyer in year five and Saban in year 8(?).

Harbaugh is finishing up his 9th year of collegiate coaching.
As great as Saban is, he didn't win his first national championship until the conclusion of his 10th season.

Hoke and RichRod should get half
jdon

$5 million per year gets you fourth in the SEC West? I think I want Kevin Sumlin's job.
Only for a couple years, of course. After that, I will have paid off a few things and bought some others and they can get rid of me.

I love Harbaugh, but you guys are making his dick sore you're working on it so hard.
Michigan isn't THAT hard to recruit to, and Hoke didn't leave the cupboard completely bare.
Harbaugh is doing great, & just about where I expected.
Best coach in the business? Hardly.
He was a willing participant in setting up last years loss to MSU, the bed-shitting in Iowa this year, & to a lesser extent OSU.
I hope he stays at Michigan for a decade and wins championships,
but after 2 years it's two " 3rd place B1G East" participation trophies.

We're 10-2 in a NY6 bowl, clearly getting a lot out of all of his players and showing constant improvement. If we win the bowl game, will finish w/in top 5.
Oh yeah. Almost forgot. IT IS ONLY YEAR 2 AND WE WERE ONE SHITTY CALL AWAY FROM THE PLAYOFF!

Should not be ahead of Saban or Meyer until he beats one of them or at least wins the big ten.
So far Harbaugh has back to back 3rd place finishes in the east.
Overpaid.

I sort of wish the $9M wasn't trotted out because it includes a life-insurance policy Harbaugh can take loans out against but will ultimately be paid back to the University. By that same logic, Saban had a booster pay his mortgage for $3.1M, and that isn't included in any salary calculations I've seen. If you are an elite coach, everyone gives you some breaks. And right now, Harbaugh is worth every penny.
December 4th, 2016 at 9:52 PM ^
Harbaugh has literally been here 2 years.
December 5th, 2016 at 1:57 AM ^
Harbaugh is making ~5 million dollars a year salary. Why on earth would he need to take out a loan? Let alone a 4 million dollar loan? Surely his finances can't be that bad.
December 5th, 2016 at 6:10 AM ^
The $4 million is the per-year premium for a whole-life policy the university has taken out on Harbaugh's life. Like all whole life policies, the beneficiary can borrow against the actual value of the policy. It's not that Harbaugh needs to borrow the money, it is just that he can. I imagine that other coaches have life insurance policies paid by the school that are not included in the salary figures in that article, but that's the Michigan Difference: Michigan is open about it.
December 5th, 2016 at 7:28 AM ^
Interesting. Thanks for the response.
Whatever they choose to pay him, he's certainly worth it. We've come a long way in the almost 2 years since his hire.
December 5th, 2016 at 8:00 AM ^
Agreed. People (other than trolls, who are just trolling) who argue that he shouldn't make more than coach X or coach Y until he wins game Z don't understand that michigan didn't hire him just to win game Z. They hired him to revitalize the program, get season ticket sales back up, excite donors about the future at michigan, etc while maintaining the highest standards of integrity. He has done evrything he was hired to do, and is worth every penny.
Brady Hoke got about $3 million a year. harbaugh gets about $5 million a year. Is the extra $2 million worth it? You bet!
