Dantonio Being Mentioned as Possible Les Miles Replacement
LSU is about to go through its own version of "It's Happening," and I've been spending the day looking at all the speculation on who will replace Les Miles. Houston's Tom Herman is at the top of the list, of course, just as he will be for Texas, Auburn and USC. Bobby Petrino is also getting a lot of run.
What I find interesting, though, is that multiple LSU reporters and national guys are speculating that Mike D'Antoni could be in the mix. Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports had my favorite explanation as to why Dantonio might be the guy - to get away from Harbaugh.
This columnist from the Baton Rouge newspaper also lists Dantonio among the 10 candidates for the job.

He will never leave Michigan State.

I think you're right, but at the same time I wonder if he's getting frustrated knowing he can't recruit the talent he needs to win the whole thing at MSU. He would be able to do that at LSU.

If she is an undergrad, then it is easy to transfer vs. being in grad school. And I'm sure lsu's admissions requirements are similar to staee's "ability to fog a mirror" admission's requirements so she should have no issues.

sit out a year. Oh, wait, nevermind.

chip on the shoulder meme doesn't translate to LSU.

It would be a huge bonus to not be at the same school as my parent.

She's a senior this year (went to high school with his daughters for 2 years; were not friends or acquaintances, but I know of them).
A lot of Spartans stay for 5th years (wayyyyy more than at Michigan), but even if that did happen, she'd be gone by 2018 at the latest.
September 27th, 2016 at 9:33 AM ^
Nothing wrong with staying for a fifth year, particularly if you're changing majors or taking extra classes to prep/meet grad school requirements.
(Outside the cost, which is the real negative).
September 26th, 2016 at 8:45 AM ^
yeah no one ever goes to college away from their parents...

I heard Urbs profess with conviction over the radio that he and his family would never leave Utah, the most "beautiful state in the country" and cited all the friends and schools and how his family loved it.
A week later he was in Gainesville.
I doubt Dantonio's kid would be the key during the type of contract negotiations that LSU is about to have with its candidates.

to attend an out-of-state college. I think that Mike could afford the tuition.

Meh. I hate Dantonio but you he's overachieved given the talent at State. I'm sure he'd recruit fine there, and he'd get more out of his guys than Miles has.

texas averages over 3k D1 recruits, Ohio over 1200, Louisiana has 670ish a year. plus you have to fight off all the other sec powers. he probably would be able to get a few difference makers that he is not able to get @ msu.

The key is that Louisiana has only one Power 5 program, so LSU has a big advantage with almost every local kid. Also, Louisiana produces four- and five-star recruits at a very high rate.
September 26th, 2016 at 8:19 AM ^
arent there approximately 3000 total D1 players that go to college every year? Maybe, double that if you include 1AA?
September 26th, 2016 at 4:16 AM ^
Just by location alone he would recruit significantly better than at MSU.
Louisana is a big time state in producing talent, plus being next door to Texas... LSU also recruits Florida as well as any outsider as well.
September 26th, 2016 at 12:12 PM ^
Under Dantonio, MSU recruits nationally.
September 26th, 2016 at 10:11 AM ^
why wouldn't he do well? It's a top program with a great local recruiting base. Dantonio is very well regarded. I have no doubt he'd start out very well, kind of a new coach bounce.
Whether he could sustain the level Miles had, I don't know. He might not need to as he seems to be very good at talent evaluation. His classes might take a step down from Miles' in ranking, but might turn out to be better.
September 26th, 2016 at 12:24 AM ^
Didn't staee also previously have a good coach who got tired of recruiting against us and finally left staee??? Oh yeah, it was nick saban.

Harbaugh's rise. . . right about now. In terms of cache, rabid fandom, and access to players, LSU must be a top five school.

I think you're right, but at the same time I wonder if he's getting frustrated knowing he can't recruit the talent he needs to win the whole thing at MSUIs there any evidence that he's frustrated with the state of his program? I don't think there is. He's got two Big Ten titles under his belt, a Rose Bowl victory, a college football playoff berth, and a stellar 8-2 record against their hated rival. He's taken MSU to heights not seen in 50 years. Every time I see him speak, he's crowing about how MSU has risen to the level of being able to sell results, not hope, etc. He seems pretty comfortable to me. Now if Harbaugh flips the script over the next few seasons, turns his sexy 8-2 record into 8-5 or 8-6 and starts bagging conference titles and even a National Championship; putting a big batch of tarnish on Dantonio's accomplishments, maybe that attitude changes. Of course, by then, Dantonio would be in his mid-60's rather than early 60's and it would be moot point as to whether he should seek greener pastures, because it's doubtful that avenue would be open at that point. Bottom line, he's not leaving MSU.
September 26th, 2016 at 9:30 AM ^
I think age has a lot to do with it... if he was 10 years younger, heading to LSU may be a more attractive option. I understand that LSU's program is in good shape, but he'd have to start over at a new school in a region he's not familiar with. Expectations would be high and by the time he gets his recruits in there, he's in his mid-60s.
Dantonio will finish his career as a Spartan, and hopefully with a nice losing streak to Harbaugh.
September 26th, 2016 at 12:54 PM ^
but LSU doesn't need rebuilding. Any good coach can go there and win immediately.
But, I see Mike staying at MSU.
September 26th, 2016 at 2:12 PM ^
"At Michigan State, we were never No. 1," Saban said of the Spartans. "It was always UM this or UM that."
September 25th, 2016 at 11:51 PM ^
Dantonio is a good coach. Nevertheless, I want him to stay at MSU so we can beat that crotchety smirk off his face.

September 26th, 2016 at 8:56 AM ^
Can't wait, in fact. However, nothing, nowhere, ever will make him or his program feel 'Respekted'.
September 26th, 2016 at 9:35 AM ^
He will not leave Sharty for another program BUT he may start having "heart issues" on Oct 30th after the boys disrespkt that whole team 38-10.

He came in and began to ignore every ncaa infraction placed in front of him. There is so much documentation on him it's unbelievable. CarGate was just the wind that toppled the house. It had been cracking from Day One. He actually brought YSU football to Columbus and did a masterful job, obviously.
