Victors not Howler Monkeys
This is my first time starting a thread, so please be kind.
Monday night, Nel Rubin in the Detroit News posted an article containing an idea for the UM game vs. Penn State; a way to protest Penn State's continued lionizing of JoePa and whitewashing his complicity in the Sandusky affair. This idea, by alumni Tim Flucht, is rather than yell, boo, and wear ugly t-shirts the day of the game, to be silent when PSU enters the stadium and encourage everyone to donate at least $5 apiece toward improving the lives of local children who've been devastated by predators. $5 x 100K fans = $1/2 Million - which will be more meaning ful than any protest.
Together we can show who are the real Victors.

"When I was on vacation this year, my family and I were able to see a large troop of howler monkeys. Howlers are the loudest sound in nature, with their howls topping out at about 140 decibels, about the same as a jet engine.
This troop traveled through our resort, from nesting to feeding areas.
In the late morning, when the grounds crew was working, the crew would use leaf blowers to clear the walks.
The blowers made the howlers crazy! They'd hoot, holler, and howl at the grounds crew, screaming in competition with the leaf blowers. The overall cacophony was unreal.
Lots of noise, but nothing was accomplished."

A little irony perhaps?
September 14th, 2016 at 12:02 PM ^
that everyone turn their backs on the team when they enter. A lot of people registered approval of the idea, and I still think it's a good idea. Needs to be something meaningful, forceful, but dignified. Turning their backs would also mean silence, but I'm not sure that silence alone really registers.

Will PSU's band be there? That would also ruin the desired effect.
September 14th, 2016 at 10:27 AM ^
Than silence. That just sits wrong with me. Great idea in theory, but needs something else besides silence.
September 14th, 2016 at 10:31 AM ^
How about everyone also turning their back to the field when PSU runs out? If we could get everyone to be silent and turn their backs I think that would be a powerful message.
September 14th, 2016 at 10:34 AM ^
Yes, that you could execute and TV would pick up on it.
September 14th, 2016 at 10:59 AM ^
That should be the reaction for ALL sports at ALL events until PSU shows contrition, or until a generation has passed and nobody involved in the cover-up or blind hero worship is still around.
You could very easily get the student section to do this. Blue hairs may be less willing to show any sort of protest. It may be hard to organize for one game, but if this is just a thing we do, then I think it would take off.
The thing about it is - even if only half the stadium does it, it will show up. If half the stadium stops booing, it goes unnoticed.
September 14th, 2016 at 5:58 PM ^
no go.
what you will get is about 85% of the stadium standing with their backs to the field and a dull roar of "down in front!" from the other 15%.

I like this idea, and it was done before. At the 1987 graduation, Michigan alum and CBS 60 Minutes anchor Mike Wallace was the commencement speaker. Unfortunately, he had recently been caught off camera but on tape making racist jokes, so a lot of the graduates were pissed that he was still the commencement speaker.
Many graduates turned their back on Wallace when he gave his commencement address. There were also bumper stickers distributed, which many placed on their commencement gowns (yellow [not maize!] with blue writing). So people not in the loop knew what's up.
I'd love to see the stadium pull this off at Penn State's expense, and start a trend.
BTW, I'm amazed nobody's said this yet on the thread but fuck Penn State and its pedophile enabling supporters.*
*Always keeping in mind that not all Penn State supporters are JoePalogists. HEY - JoePalogists! IS THAT A THING HERE? It should be a thing!
September 14th, 2016 at 11:38 AM ^
They may not all be JoePalogists (TM), but they definitely tend to be in the "tired of the witch hunt, done and over with it" camp.
September 14th, 2016 at 11:32 AM ^
I like that idea a lot actually and I think you could communicate it well enough that quite a bit of the stadium would take part too and it would be on TV for all to see, which is part of the beauty of this particular protest.
The message in it is pretty damning too, as it should be. A few #Joe Knew hashtags on random backs of shirts perhaps? The turning the back is probably sufficient though.

unified "something" I would guess this would have a pretty big impact, in the moment at least. 115000 people all trying to scream or chant the same thing would end up sounding like garbled crap. 115000 in stoney silence would be pretty noteworthy.
September 14th, 2016 at 10:32 AM ^
It's a nice idea, but you'll never get the entire stadium to be silent. Even if all Michigan fans did it, you'd still have the Penn State fans cheering.
September 14th, 2016 at 10:57 AM ^
And history says PSU fans are more likely to donate money to allow predators to continue, not help their victims.
September 14th, 2016 at 11:57 AM ^
Which says something significant in and of itself.
September 14th, 2016 at 2:56 PM ^
"You'll never get the entire stadium to be silent."
That's not actually true; the entire stadium has been silent before. Like, pin-drop, hear the heartbeat of the person next to you silent. Granted, that was the moment of silence before the first game played after the 9/11 attacks. So let's hope we never have a reason to repeat that moment. But for a moment big enough, it is in fact possible to get all 110,000 to be quiet at once -- and it was a truly profound thing to experience. If that could be organized for the Penn State game, whoooo boy would that make a statement.

I'd settle for stomping their pedo-enabling asses back to the stone age.

though I have a problem with denying simian free speech.
I'll donate tonight.
September 14th, 2016 at 10:54 AM ^
If this is to work then the only way is to have multiple volunteers at each entry point to the stadium with big signs telling everyone what to do when Penn State runs onto the field and why. Idk how many entry points to the stadium there are but this could be accomplished with under 50 people I assume.
And I agree that turning our backs to them instead of just silence would be the best and most noticeable protest
September 14th, 2016 at 10:54 AM ^
Turn backs on them as they enter.
Raise and pretend to be reading neespapers as they enter (a UCLA basketball practice from eons ago)
Throw shoes at them (an Iraqi favorite)
Win with a score differential unknown to mankind (my fave)

that shoe throwing incident was funny as hell. I was seriously impressed with the President's reaction time. It was like someone warned him ahead of time, hey, just so you know, someone might throw a shoe at you during the press conference.
/as for PSU, I think turning our backs is an excellent idea. Even if only say 1/4 of the people do it, I'll bet the rest of the crowd follows suit quickly.

September 14th, 2016 at 11:11 AM ^
You are totally fucking wrong. What needs kept in perspective is that penn state covered up child sexual abuse for a minimum of 10 years and may have for 4 decades.
They need to learn that their paterno football wins were not more important than child safety.
This is a fantastic opportunity to remind them of that and do something good for children.
