Hype Train: Sam Webb edition
Let's end on a positive note...This team looks good. Really good. I believe Wilton Speight has greater command of the offense than Jake Rudiock did last year at this time. I still believe Michigan will roll into Columbus undefeated. There is every reason to believe that all the lofty expectations placed on Michigan this year are attainable.Sam Webb

Defense travels which will help with some of the late season road games. The defensive line should help to alleviate concerns at LB. As long as QB and LT aren't liabilities this team should do great things. Let the hype flow through you.

To me the real key will come down to how good the OL play is on a consistent basis. I think if they take a nice step up this season, everything else should fall into place. Of course it also helps if a few breaks go our way too.
September 1st, 2016 at 11:35 AM ^
Yeah I am a little concerned about how much upside there really is with the guys we have on the OL for this year. Cole will be just fine and if Bredeson is the real deal then that bodes well for the future. I think the OL will be good enough to get through the B1G season, but are they good enough to hold their own against elite DL's? That remains to be seen.
September 1st, 2016 at 11:41 AM ^
Not actually knowing myself, what team that we play will have an elite defensive line? Who even has a very good one?
September 1st, 2016 at 11:44 AM ^
I wouldn't consider any on our current schedule to be elite. Was more regarding skepticism about the ability of our OL holding up in a potential playoff scenario against a team like Alabama.
September 1st, 2016 at 12:27 PM ^
Jesus, why worry about that now?
September 1st, 2016 at 1:29 PM ^
Wait... No, I won't go there.

not many D-Lines in the country will be better than ours, and they have faced them countless times already! Here's hoping!

That could be the difference between a very good 11-2 or 12-1 season and a national title. There aren't many truly homewrecking DLs in football, but if you make the playoff (a possibility for us) you have a good chance of encountering one. Might not be until the end, but it does matter. Just ask Oregon.
September 1st, 2016 at 1:23 PM ^
But again, the additional upside of having a homewrecking DL ourselves is that at least our O-Line sees one every day in practice. A different team with a merely OK line wouldn't have that luxury.
Steel sharpens steel & all that...

Absolutely.
That, and (moreso than usual): INJURIES.
I think we're a little vulnerable to the injury bug this season due to our (improving) depth situation.

This is true, although I also think Coach D'Antonio shits out Lucky Charms on a regular basis, which is why they had such a strong record last year.
I'm definitely boarding the Hype Train for our team this year, but I also want to do it without having to assume that we'll get inordinately lucky.

I was thinking that, but I didn't want to rain on the parade.
That said, I'm assuming Speight actually looks good (assuming that he is the starter).

They've only lost 4 games total in the last 4 years, I don't see how they'd have more than 2 losses coming in and I wouldn't be surprised if they were 10-1 with their only loss coming to Oklahoma. They lose a lot but they return a very good QB and like it or not Urban Meyer is one of the greates coaches of this generation, aside from OU I can't see who else they'd lose to before us. Sparty is the team in the East that will take a noticeable step back, not Ohio State.
It probably won't be a #1 vs #2 match-up like 2006 but it should be a top 10 match-up.
September 1st, 2016 at 11:43 AM ^
If they are both undefeated or if OSU only has one loss versus Oklahoma, it is a top five and maybe top three matchup.

It took us a good coaching hire to recover from that game.
September 1st, 2016 at 12:02 PM ^
Our demise was Lloyd Carr beginning to coast and then hiring Richrod & Hoke in back to back searches. That season - even with that loss - should've been helpful to Michigan's program in the grand scheme of things.
