Part of me always wanted to believe that Jared Allen was there to simply warn Orlovsky of the terrible peril he was in, you know, shouting "THE LINE! YOU'RE ABOUT TO GO OVER THE LINE!"
A vain belief, to be sure, and it wouldn't have mattered much regardless, but Ol' 12-Step is still with us in Detroit, after all these years and I have feelings about that.
I will definitely tune in to see Rudock though. Glasgow too, if he gets in.

Now this one REALLY bothered me.

My personal favorite Millenism was picking Mike Williams, who hadn't played in over a year, 10th overall. Picks 11-15 were all Pro-Bowlers:
11) Demarcus Ware
12) Shawne Merriman
13) Jammal Brown
14) Thomas Davis
15) Derrick Johnson

Good news is Coach is right down the road.

Was about to correct you about the 3rd QB rule, until I looked it up and it was abolished in 2011. Never knew that, thought it was still a thing.

Sweet thanks for the heads up....anyone wanna bet on the odds that JH might be onsite to watch?
August 12th, 2016 at 11:55 AM ^
Considering it's in Pittsburgh and the team is in the middle of camp...not great, Bob.
But who knows with Harbaugh.
August 12th, 2016 at 11:59 AM ^
Wouldn't it be more newsworthy if he wasn't playing?
The outlook is that the Lions probably won't keep three QB's on the active roster, but he should/will at least get a practice squad spot. The key for Rudock is to put together some good film from the preseason and explore his options moving forward, whether thats with the Lions or another franchise.
August 12th, 2016 at 11:59 AM ^
kidding aside, it would be so good if he would make a roster and get legit shot to play. i just hope it's not b/c stafford gets hurt (or is dismal).
August 12th, 2016 at 12:08 PM ^
Based on preseason observations, he's been struggling and not looking like a NFL QB - and regardless of improvement, he's far enough behind DO to be out of the running for backup. Basically, his options are make the roster out of camp as 3rd string (like Kellen during his Lions tenure), get put on the practice squad, or get released altogether.
Unless he plays lights out in his preseason work, making the team seems dubious given the Lions poor depth at other positions (keeping 3rd qb would not be the Patriot/Bob Quinn move). My guess is he comes on well enough to get the PS invite, without doing well enough to get poached by another team.
He then holds the clipboard and learns for a year, and they'll see where he's at in Y2 or look for another developmental QB.

Just points out that he's improving (which, duh) and that Lions have a decision to make whether to keep him on the roster or put him on the PS. I wish the best for him, and think he does have a shot to be a solid backup some day, but the reality is he's far from it right now. It would be roster management malpractice for the Lions, given their depth issues (and Stafford's recent durability) to use up a spot on him (they can barely field a two-deep of LBs right now!).

The fascination with Dan Orlovsky from the coaching staff. The ONLY positive thing they can ever say about him being in the NFL is that he "knows the system." Who cares if you are a scholar of the system if you can't throw the darn ball?
August 12th, 2016 at 1:26 PM ^
Things Orlovsky knows:
- the system
Things Orlovsky doesn't know:
- how deep the end zone is
August 12th, 2016 at 1:17 PM ^
A good backup QB if he ends up maximizing the talent he has.
Starting? Just doesn't have the raw arm strength. HIs deep ball sucks.
But you can't teach his "gameyness" and leadership.
August 12th, 2016 at 1:25 PM ^
Well, here's a 50-yard post right on the money.
August 12th, 2016 at 1:39 PM ^
All the ones he missed. One 50-yard post is not going to make up for the fact that he just doesn't have a great deep ball. He didn't at Iowa, and he had trouble with it at Michigan. He overthrew a ton of them.
The ones he made were those stop and gos where the WR beat the secondary like a drum and he just had to float it up there. Under pressure, with a guy in coverage, he couldn't make it happen.
NFL Draft Report:
BOTTOM LINE
Rudock benefited in Jim Harbaugh's pro-style attack that allowed Rudock to find some downfield success in playaction. Rudock has natural accuracy, but needs to improve ball placement and quickness through progressions since he doesnt have the arm strength to fit throws into tight, downfield windows. Rudock's impressive pro day on the heels of a strong finish to the 2015 campaign makes him a third-day draft possibility with backup potential.

Whatever Ridock's issues, I'd take him over Orlovsky any day. I just can't get past the fact that DO was not good enough to be kept by an 0-16 team. The 0-16 team decided NOT to resign him! I just don't get how he's still in the NFL, let alone in Detroit, where nobody likes him and he's a living link to 0-16.
It does nothing more than reinforce my belief that Caldwell plays players he likes over on-field success. Once he puts someone in a spot, that person is there forever. Look at Whitehead! Why was he not starting last year, when he was clearly one of the best LB's on the team? I'm not a fan of Caldwell, at all...
August 12th, 2016 at 1:57 PM ^
Caldwell is a loyal dude. And he's not a very good coach.
If they start 1-6 or miss the playoffs, he gone.

Rudock is definitely worth of a practice squad spot, IMO.
Can wait to see him tonight.

Don't know if Jake wants to play, after seeing the human turnstyle the Lions put at LT.
Maybe counting on a Buckeye who didn't have to do much pass protection on the blind side isn't the best idea.
August 12th, 2016 at 7:28 PM ^
lol this offensive line can't block a thing. It'll be a little harder to tell moving forward since it looks like the Steelers have removed most of their first team defense, but it's not looking good.

And a 2pt conversion. He did not hurt his chances tonight. Very well done Jake.
