OT : Coach Butch Jones says Tennessee has 'done the right things'
They are trying in Knoxville, they really are. I am sure the "background checks" are very comprehensive and cover at least the last 30 minutes of the recruit's life.
Tennessee’s Butch Jones said school does background checks on recruits: “1st thing in our recruiting profile is character"
— Brett McMurphy (@McMurphyESPN) May 31, 2016
I believe him. Unfortunately, his definition of character is "will protect your teammates when they rape somebody".
Would have been nice if the tennesse AD had used character as part of the coaching evaluation.
They've got some characters alright.
Background checks are unlikely to find anything on anyone with a Juvinile record. Even then its only a record of getting caught, not a record of someones character.
There's a certain unintentional candor later in the article
"Everything is about giving a young man an opportunity," Jones said.
Indeed, Butch. In fact, it's a good thing to give a young man an opportunity. The problem is when that becomes "everything". It's called a loss of perspective, and you and your university have a bad case of it.
time off away from the team. Because calling it a suspension would have looked wrong.

Hold anything back tell us how you really feel.
they had done anything at all to change things.
Butch is saying that nothing was wrong in the first place.
Nah, teabagging personal trainers and then destroying their lives is essentially normal and acceptable behavior. Boys will be boys, after all...
Is that not a picture of Butch Davis at the top of the article?
ESPN can't get their unethical Butches straight.
ESPN should have just shown a picture of Mike D'Antoni and been done with it.
I'm kinda astounded this guy still has a job. So much bad stuff has come out, and his involvement and culpability seems pretty clear so far. Plus, it's like he's some all-time great coach Tennessee would be dying to protect (not saying that's the right attitude, but it is one I increasingly expect). Does not make sense how he's still around, other than Tennessee just saying "we don't give a shit about rape."
To me, it's a stunning indictment of the University of Tennessee that he hasn't been fired. I'd have a really hard time sending my daughter to that university because of this.
There's optimism. If there wasn't he probably would have been fired, but the program that hasn't won anything in a decade is the favorite to win the SEC East and a dark horse playoff contender. Nobody will step in front of that train.
As much as I love football, this shit is really starting to make me sick.
On a brighter note, the article uses a picture of Butch Davis not Butch Jones. ESPN for the win again!

"What about the sexual assault victims, coach?"
"The who now? OHHH... You mean the bitches. Yeah, females get noisy sometimes, but we don't worry about that. Cops shut em up for us."

Why does the ESPN article have a picture of Butch Davis?
If you've seen one sleaze, you've seen them all.
Hey, you're right!
All it takes is a mid-summer scandal or slow start to the season for something like this to happen.

unless the boosters are looking for anything to get rid of said coach.
Thanks to long memories and Charles Woodson's possession of "Peyton Manning's Heisman," UT is yet another school that sees Michigan as a "rivalry game." For those who discount the fact that so many Tennesseans are still pissed about Woodson winning the Heisman, remember that as many as 80% of the people in Tennessee are still pissed about losing the "War of Northern Aggression."
The next time UT plays Michigan, they will come out extremely fired up. Hopefully, it won't do them any good.
doesn't this make what has happened there that much worse? Butch, you are further ahead to not say anything, punish the football players, and move on. You open a can of worms by saying you do "extensive" background checks and are "doing the right things". I would HATE /s for someone to go looking into all your "hardwork" on the background checks of your recruits. People are always wanting to defense themselves when they should really just try and keep as low of a profile as possible, and keep moving.

Unless his last name is Wade. Couldn't shoot, couldn't score-but what an intense defender and a rebounding machine. Shout out to mid-1980's Michigan hoops!
or unless his last name is Woolfolk....
