App State was worse than MSU honestly. Yes it was shocking and terrible at the time but I had confidence the team would rebound from it and while most of us expected a good season like we had we didn't really expect contending for a national title. 2007 we had multiple publications predicting us to play for a national title. That game was a disgrace. Not only because we couldn't stop them for shit, but we struggled hard on offense too for the first half. We looked totally unprepared until Mike Hart about single handedly brought us back but that wasn't enough and shouldn't have had to be.

Respectfully disagree.

App State was definitely more disgraceful, but MSU was more painful.

The fact that we had literally already won the game but then lost it in the most unlikely way. And the fact that it was against a rival. Especially a rival who we had already been on a long string of losses to. Defintiely way worse than App State.

At least we beat both Notre Dame and MSU in 2007.

hell, i'm still not over 1994 colorado

trying to remember an actual win that would be as traumatic for the other team as those three. Best i can come up with are standard late wins like 1995 virginia, 2005 penn state, comebacks like 2004 minny and 2008 wisconsin. Nothing freakish that should be once a lifetime at most like hail marys, blocked punts, or beating a highly ranked team a division higher

Is fake. The puncher also has a very unrealistic follow through. He lunges forward and guides his fist directly into the kids face. It's an exaggerated follow through like a pro wrestler does. Someone throw a real punch wouldnt carry forward like that. It's also clear the kid had predetermined his he was going to fall. He went with a cliche dive to the floor on the right. If he really took an unexpected punch his head would have flown backward and he likely would have fallen back into his chair if anything. It's fake.

Meh.  These rankings are really lazy.  All they did is essentially take the end of last year and interpolate forward in a straight line as if nothing changed (like OSU and AL losing a bunch of key starters).

No real analysis or even imagination.

The current year is never just a straight line continuation from the previous year.

That's the safest [worst] way for any extrapolation to work. The mentality is that things will always be as they most recently were. It takes advantage of people's lack of reasoning skills. It's a lazy mentality and I hate it. I still have nightmares about budget setting in 2009 and 2010, pleading, basically in tears, saying that you can't project 15-20% losses on investment for the next decade...to a sea of blank or skeptical faces.

Me thinks "analysis and imagination" isnt neccesary as long as the Alabama death machine is operating at near-capacity and even OSU to a lesser degree.

Hasn't the last 5-10 years been a lesson in basically "straight-line continuation"?

On the upside, TCU, Baylor, Michigan State, Michigan, even Clemson and OSU at the very top all beg to differ.

On the downside, Florida, Texas, and USC do too.

Obviously, not every team is going to move in or out of last year's top 10 or top 25.  But they can't all just be the same as last year with just a few position switches.

Where are the surprise thinking-out-of-the-box inclusions and exclusions from the top 10 and top 25?  All the teams mentioned above fit that description at one time.

I think we are arguing semantics here.

Your critique is true of any hypothitical preseason ranking. It just that we all favor rankings that:  A) rank our team high

B) rank teams we don't like, low.

"thinking outside the box.." and "critical analysis" are just convenient cover for that line of reasoning.

Since when has Alabama losing key starters been an issue?  In the last 8 years Bama has finished in the poll:  6, 1, 10, 1, 1, 7, 4, 1.

OSU has finished 3, 12, 1, 4 in Meyer's tenure.  There's only 3 games I could see OSU losing - at Oklahoma, at MSU and Michigan.  The Penn St and Wisky trips will be tough but while OSU is inexperience it's loaded with potential talent.

True. But 2013 was the best Spartan team ever probably and last year was a huge fluke.

Also, Dantonio has never been able to beat OSU in East Lansing. He has two wins in Columbus (2011 against Fickell and 2015) and one in Indianapolis (2013), but MSU hasn't beaten OSU in Spartan Stadium since the 1990s.

Honestly I think that OSU could definitely lose at Wisconsin. Much more likely than losing at MSU in my opinion. Maybe even as likely as losing to us. Their youth will be effecting them much more at that point of the season, Wisconsin has a bye week before to prepare and it's the Badgers first (and arguably only) home game against a ranked team this season.

...and overall talent, hard for me to believe michigan is better than ohio state.

i am excited with a top 10 ranking - lets make it happen on the field!

Ugh... 2007 is the first thing that comes to mind for me too. I think that's the last year that I bought a preview magazine other than HTTV.
