That is quite possibly the worst map/graphic in human history. If Columbus had used that map, he wouldn't have been able to discover his own asshole using both hands...
And apparently there is at least one Buckeye fan in Flint.
That's Lapeer County. Flint is in Genesee County, directly to the west of Lapeer County.
Looks to me like they only polled one person in Western South Dakota who is apparently a Stanford fan. Why couldn't they have called me?
lt looks like the sample is way too small and self-selected for this to make any sense. That's the only explanation for western Maine being UCLA territory, South Dakota loving Stanford, and New Mexico being pretty evenly split between Auburn, Tulane, Notre Dame, and Kansas State.
EDIT: To that point, this is a county map based on 3,462 survey responses. Wikipedia says there are 3,142 counties in the U.S. Translation: This map is stupid.
That was my thought as well, It has an interesting premise and is useful for identifying some broad trends, but there are too many outlying results to be able to take it as anything definitive. Which is likely the point.
And there were only responses from 787 unique counties. That's 25% from the total. So 75% of this maps is bullshit. And i guessing, based on the graphic that most of the responses that they did get came from whatever county Eugene, OR is in.
Well that percentage seems correct for your average election.
The entire state of South Dakota is for Stanford. This makes sense since there are a lot of trees in that state.
They just like the band ....
And that kid will probably make billions for creating an app that wipes your ass for you.
Already exists. The company is called "Crapp, LLC."

What you talking bout Willis?
vast swaths of Kansas and Colorodo, inexplicably.
Interesting, but a relatively small sample size.
What stuck out to me was the state of New Mexico, which is made up of Notre Dame, Kansas State, Auburn, and ... Tulane?!
You know how I know this map is wrong? It shows Rutgers fans outside of New Jersey
There are no Rutgers fans IN New Jersey, let alone outside of it.
EDIT: As a side note, it has California with as much of a Nevada and Fresno presence as USC. Fail.
By area yes, but not even close by population.
Depending on where you are in California, that's not entirely ridiculous.
I stand corrected.
NorCal is completely hilarious: Missouri, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Oklahoma State(!), whatever that horsehead thing is. My favorite, though, is Sacramento County, population 1.5 million people, who are sufficiently disinterested in Reddit and college sports that Kansas is the winner.
For whatever reason, their is an unproportional amount of Californians who attend The University of Oklahoma. Outside of Oklahoma and Texas, California provides the most amount of students each year. My guess is that those are all families who went to Oklahoma and made it rich in oil.
I imagine that's because there are a metric shit ton of Californians, so it's highly likely that they comprise one of the highest state-of-origin cohorts at any large school, particularly one west of the Mississippi. I also wonder if there are still ties to Oklahoma via Dust Bowl-era immigration, similar to the way that SE Michigan has populations with strong ties to the South due to WWII-era immigration.
At this juncture, if indeed these results are a true reflection of fan affiliaiton, I would like to officially call out Lapeer, Midland, Kalamazoo and Van Buren counties in the Lower Peninsula for failing to live up to the "Pure Michigan" slogan. Come to think of it, we could constrain the parameters even further to Presque Isle county and the portions of the I-96, US-127 and US-131 corridors that MSU dominates.
There is then the Upper Peninsula to address...
What we really need here to confirm this is some on-the-ground reporting - Midland County residents, please poll your neighborhoods for Alabama fans. If you find them, ask them "WTF?"
But we've made huge inroads in New York, Connecticut, and Arkansas for some odd reason...
as a former resident, I can safely call bullshit. Even when I visit I can't recall any Bama fans running around. ND wouldn't have suprised me though.
As a former Lapeer County resident I apologize and assure you there is NO WAY that area is anything other than Blue or an awful shade of green!

FWIW this map closely resembles the NYT 2014 college football fan map. Little surprised that there isn't more Michigan representation in the Chicago area on the reddit map.
http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/10/03/upshot/ncaa-football-map.html?_r=0
I love this map because Michigan State looks like a cancerous growth in the State of Michigan.
Well.....
Isn't it?
Closely resembles might not be the best term for it. Maybe more like "the NYT map is in every way more accurate and just plain better than the reddit map."
That's Nelson County, VA, home of The Waltons and my workplace. Pretty sure that's Charlotte. And I'm pretty sure I know exactly who is the one Charlotte fan who answered this stupid survey. CEO of our company has a son currently playing football for them.
whenever........ I stop in for a Reuben Sandwich on the way to Northern Va .....Is the nearby racetrack still going??????????
Oak Ridge? They have events there every once in a while but I don't know about actual races. And yeah I live in Amherst County now but I work up in Afton so I commute straight up 29 every weekday, right past the Cafe, all the way to the other end of the county.
Yeah it's at least 4 hours away. OK St. is a little bit farther than that from Long Island.
Some observations:
What's going on in Seattle? UW mods will be furious.
We have more counties in Illinois than NIU, but they have more counties in FL than we do.
UCLA is HUGE in Maine. Apparently.
Lots of osu grads in San Diego? I guess?
The suburbs of San Antonio seems to hold an unreasonable number of Spartans.
South Dakota, Kansas, New Mexico, California, New York, Maine, Vermont, and a host of others are alllll jacked up.
As a Virginia resident, VA is relatively accurate. VT fans everywhere except Charlottesville. Except if you look closely, it looks like Charlottesville itself is still VT while Albemarle county, which surrounds the city, is UVA. Also, random Georgia, UM, OSU, and ECU fans all around VA Beach.
Deleware looks like Romania.
Places like Ohio, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Iowa, Oklahoma, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, West Virginia (ish), and Kentucky actually look objectively accurate. Somehow.
Who moves from South Carolina to Erie, PA?
Petersburg, VA has given up.
In conclusion, this map is crap. But interesting to look at regardless because I like to make fun of it.
Surprised that there isn't more Michigan in the DMV on the reddit map.
Bethesda and DC is awash in Maize and Blue on Saturdays in the fall.
What's going on with Seattle?..... I keep the M flag flying high. Poor UW saps.
