Spotlight on TB Ty Isaac
"Isaac, 6-3, 228 pounds, said he was surprised that he got the call on a play designed for a "speed back" but was pleased to hear his number called.
"Everybody got to their assignments and did their jobs," said Isaac, "and it opened up. Just as far as contributing, it felt good. I'd been here for a year without playing and did a lot of practice squad stuff. I know that stuff helps the team, but it feels a lot better when you can put it on the scoreboard and help your team win."
He sat out last season after transferring to Michigan from Southern Cal.
Isaac, who finished with eight carries for 114 yards Saturday, has great potential. He was a five-star recruit, and USA Today named him the second-team tailback on its All-America team."

A man among boys. I love the 1-2 punch of Smith and Isaac. It's going to be a good B1G season.

I think he's gonna get a lot of carries in our game vs BYU. His speed and vision gives us a better chance at getting 5-6 ypc than Smith, I believe.

Isaac is the number 1 back
Green is number 2 his wiggle and knack for getting those extra yards can not be taught.
Johnson and Smith tied for 3rd and fourth Johnson is obviously coming along still and Smith just hits a hole

he hasn't been watching Michigan football. Maybe he is still watching Green's high school highlight tape or something.

your lack of points attest to your expertise on the UM running back competition.
Green isn't even third....Smith, Isaac, and Johnson are all well ahead of him

lol... pulling out the "expert card" way to go... still does not show that you know what you are talking about with RBs. Green is slow and goes down easy. Good for a 16 year old Scotch...bad for a RB.
September 20th, 2015 at 12:17 PM ^
Everything you used to describe Derrick Green is the opposite of what he actually is. He's a 1 cut runner with no wiggle, his vision is not that good and he goes down way too easy.

What I notice in games though is Smith being a better running back than Green. Not sure what you're seeing in "the film room."

...yeah...and I was the one that saw Green's HS tape and thought "how the hell is this slow, 1 cut RB who goes down on first contact...a 5 star?"
This has translated to college. Green is only servicable when huge holes are opened for him. He simply does not have the vision, burst or feet to create anything on his own. CBs take him down with arm tackles.
Green was a fat kid in JR high who slimmed down and was made a RB in HS. He got yards only because he was decently fast straight line, and was bigger than the other kids in HS.

Yeah? Well, I was the guy who looked at Tom Brady's tape when he was still at Michigan and said "This dude is gonna win, like, 4 Super Bowls in the pros." I got negged all to hell back then, but who's laughing now?

so we can get some speed back there. Pound with Smith and Isaac and let Drake run wild
September 20th, 2015 at 11:29 AM ^
Clearly Deveon brings the most effort, but also least upside. The Drake brings speed & elusiveness, Ty brings a combination of those two. Green has the "potential" to do so as well, if he can demonstrate the willingness to block, fight, give max effort that Smith does.
I think they'll keep running all four of them out there - at least until one gets "in a rhythm"

It seems pretty clear you're just making shit up.
He's 4th on the depth chart because he isn't as good as the other backs. If there was an "attitude disconnect" between Green and Jim Harbaugh, he wouldn't see any time.
September 20th, 2015 at 4:58 PM ^
Then he got a lot of carries last week. That doesn't happen if Green has an attitude problem.

"Everybody got to their assignments and did their jobs" -- Isaac
I'm confused. Didn't Harbaugh say in the post-game press conference that the play was not blocked properly, and that he (Harbaugh) thought it would end up as a loss? Harbaugh gave credit to Isaac for finding a way to turn it into a long gain and score, but it was clear Harbaugh was disappointed the play did not unfold as designed.
(On the radio play-by-play, Dierdorf was very complimentary of the play design and execution, giving particular credit to Glasgow's downfield block and Isaac's patience waiting for Glasgow.)
So again ... I'm confused.
September 20th, 2015 at 11:21 AM ^
That's where I'm confused.
September 20th, 2015 at 11:28 AM ^
I'm not confused about Isaac's comments. More about Harbaugh's.
Harbaugh could easily have said in the press conference that he was glad Isaac got to the second level and scored. Harbaugh didn't have to elaborate on the missed blocking. Yet he did. Why?
As for Isaac, if the play was broken and he knew it, he could easily have said, "I'm just happy I had a hole to run through and had the field in front of me."
September 20th, 2015 at 11:45 AM ^
I don't know the answer, but it could be that the pulling OL may have been late...At first glance, Isaac seems like he has a wall along the line of scrimage preventing him from turning up field. The play occurred because Isaac predicted where a hole WOULD BE and hit it exactly when it opened.
September 20th, 2015 at 11:56 AM ^
Thank you. And if that's what happened, then very good for Isaac for predicting a hole and taking advantage of it.
Plays don't always unfold as designed, and reacting to opportuniites -- planned or unplanned -- is part of the game. I was just struck by the divergence of views and was wondering what might have been planned vs. what actually happened.
Harbaugh is clearly in a mode of trying to achieve execution as close to plan as possible. That's likely where his comments came from. In other words, "Love the effort, love the TD, but next time I want to run it exactly as planned."

therein lies the difference between Smith and Isaac, Drake, and Green. Smith has poor vision and only gets yards off of leg drive. He's a Ron Dayne with less talent, more effort.
Isaac's agility made that play and set up the blocks. Harbaugh wants the line and WRs to make the blocks on their own, and that play would not have gone for anything with Smith back there. I think Drake would likely have scored on that play, and Green would have gone for 15 and been caught. Smith would have run right into Glasgow's back and been stuffed. That's why Harbaugh is mad about the blocking. That's why most of us want Isaac in there. He has vision and agile feet. He got more carries and actually showed more leg drive, too.
If I am Wheatley, I push for Isaac more and more. Isaac is like a bigger, slightly slower Wheatley. He's got the vision and the size that he can be dangerous with more and more carries.
I'd love to see Isaac get 18-20 carries, 15-18 for Drake, 12-15 for Smith against BYU.
September 20th, 2015 at 9:46 PM ^
If you're Wheatley, you do your fucking job and recomend the back that's worked the hardest and looked the best that week.
So far it's been Smith.
Who gives a shit what each players best skillset is? If you follow instructions (blocking, holes, etc) and work hard enough (don't take plays off, remember your assignments, give 110%)
then you'll play on Saturday.
I'm sure the playbook features plays that would give an advantage to one back or the other.
Plenty for any who are good enough to play.
