OT: Sports apps
Fellas,
What are your favorite smartphone apps for sports, and how do you use them? I have a few apps on my phone, but I have yet to find one that I really like. The ones I have currently are:
- ESPN - I like the score updates and I enjoy the Gamecast feature, but other than that the app isn't very good. I receive push notifications all the time about stuff I really don't care about. The news for my favorite teams updates rarely; and when it does, the writing is often poor (i.e. written by a guy who really doesn't know what he's talking about). I also have technical issues with it quite often.
- Twitter - IMO the best app for news. I follow my favorite people, and read the articles that intrigue me. News, however, is really the only thing it's good for. And there are no alerts when something happens.
- Bleacher Report - Love the notifications I get for breaking news, but that's about it. The rest of the app is meh.
- MGoBlog HD - I can't believe I ever used the regular MGoBlog app. HD is so much better. Great for discussion and news everything Michigan, but that's pretty much it.
- 247 Bolts - Downloaded this yesterday. I was really disappointed I couldn't use it for checking recruiting rankings, ballz, etc. I'm probably going to delete it unless told otherwise.
Are there different features you like about these apps that I should try out? Are there any different apps that you would recommend?
Thanks!
CBS Sports or Yahoo Sports are my favorites.
Think its just called Yahoo Sports-- great for easy to navigate score / stat updates

Like the OP, I find the notifications awesome. I don't use the app for anything else, but the quick updates for any team or sport I follow without having to read any articles makes it my favorite sports app. I never thought I'd say this but B/R has come a long way

I have an app called TheScore, really good and easy to use, it covers all sports too.
is a great app. There are few sports not on there and it isn't buggy on IOS that I've noticed.

I listed them in no particular order, just off the top of my head.
theScore has been good for National Headlines
Some of the M-Live apps are decent - especially when needing to read offline later.
Trying one called SportsAlerts - gets scores quickly.
They send notifications when multiple people you follow are tweeting about the same subject, so while not exactly an alert you could subscribe to, it sort of works. For example if you get a notification that says something like "MGoBlog, Ace Anbender, Steve Lorenz and one other are talking about "Michigan Football" etc, there's a good chance there's Michigan news to look at. Or if a bunch of people all follow the same account, Obama made a twitter account... or on a smaller scale a new FB commit, sometimes there are alerts for that.
You can also subscribe to someone's tweets with the little star icon if you want an alert everytime they tweet something (may be a bit overkill...)
Yep, you can specify Twitter accounts to have pop up as notifications or even text messages. You, of course, have to be selective so your phone isn't always blowing up. I have 3ish baseball accounts that I have notifications sent to me so I can have as much of an edge as possible in fantasy baseball. :)
MGoBlog app for Android needs to be updated for Android M. Doesn't work at all currently. I would happily pay for someone to get this fixed. And, actually, the app is in need of an update anyway.
I believe the Android app was made as some kind of school project and hasn't been updated in a while.
Someone with Android skillz should talk to Brian about making an updated version.
I brought this up a couple of months back and a few intrepid MGoBloggers were going to look into it. I have heard nothing since.

theScore/sometimes titled Score Mobile is my favorite overall sports app. Scores are clean, notifications are very customizable and it is super easy to navigate. I really like the content for each game too, which includes betting lines and how they've moved, weather, broadcast facts, umps/refs, and informative stat overviews.
I haven't used the ESPN app in awhile so they may have changed it, but I used to find it clunky.
Otherwise, it's MGoBlog HD for Michigan content. I also follow some subreddits for the teams I enjoy and r/CFB for general CFB news and use the Alien Blue app. Twitter is good for big breaking stuff. That's really about it.

Reddit. Then I just go to the subreddit of whatever team/sport I want to check up on.
espn is the worst...
MGoBlog
MLB At Bat
Livescore
MGoBlog
MLive Miichigan News
Pretty solid since they updated it to "ESPN". I don't have problems with it crashing and it's solid easy navigation.
For fantasy news, "cbs fantasy" is my favorite app.

For something a little different than just scores, I recommend Thuuz. It rates games (live and upcoming) on an excitement scale of 0-100, personalized for each user based on favorite teams and leagues. It'll notify you if a game gets to a certain level of excitement and have info on what channel to watch it on. I love it during college football and basketball seasons as I sometimes don't know what game to watch out of dozens on at any given time. This app helps with that.
