Tim Staudt of the lansing state journal on Harbaugh
I'll fess up to misreading the quote, though a link to the full article might have helped.
My larger point remains that these local sports takes tend to contain little in the way of actual content and far more in creating message board debates.
He isn't an MSU slappy, Jack Ebling for LSJ is a slappy. Staudt has held MSU to task on many occasions. Especially with respect to Nick Saban. He had the inside track on that issue and believed that MSU botched that whole thing.
He has had Lloyd Carr as a guest on his shows several times and is in frequent contact with Jim Brandstatter (an East Lansing alum).
The only thing I would say he is guilty of, is he occasionally criticizes the the arrogance of U of M, which isn't without evidence. But that gets the locals excited and that's probably in the job description.
Ebling hasn't written for the LSJ in a decade. Staudt writes a Sunday column -- that's it. Staudt's mainly a TV and radio guy. Ebling turned himself into a TV/radio guy.
Catch their shows sometimes. Staudt is an uninformed blatherer. Ebling does his research and has good guests. Staudt has always been a UM wannabee. He's constantly predicted better things for Michigan the past several years -- and he's been wrong. He's the sort of MSU alumnus who wants to hedge his bets to show he can be "objective." I know, because I'm similar. But his comments in the LSJ are hardly different than when Hoke and Rich Rod took over.
Saban also lost to Louisiana-Monroe that year. And that was a bad Louisiana-Monroe team, even by Louisiana-Monroe standards. How bad? North Texas went 1-9 with their only win coming against... Louisiana-Monroe.
I like saying Louisiana-Monroe.

He knows that if Michigan beats Sparty this year, there will be hell to pay in offices the following Monday morning. And Sparty fans, like him, will need to play it cool despite that nagging fear that Harbaugh was all that was needed to turn this rivalry back in our favor. A louder Big House, with a once again stout defense and calculating offense? It's the biggest fear of every team in the B1G.
Happy we play them at home, but they're going to be an extremely tough out.

Sparty took advantage of PSU being sanctioned, our misadventures, and having Wisconsin taken off their schedule. And in 2013, they played OSU once and on a neutral field. I'm not sure how different the last two years would've been if they played those games against us in Ann Arbor, but that was more good scheduling fortune for them.
They deserve credit for winning the games, but we'll see how they do now that we have a more than competent coaching staff.

I tend to trust F+/ rankings a lot more than what some idiot newspaperman thinks -- mind you, Drew Sharp and others like him get a say in the AP Polls. Not taking anything away from State's last two years, but they weren't a legitimate top-five team in either of them.
I guess that is taking something away from MSU. Whatever. Happy Memorial Day, MGoBlog!
If you think he's never coaching in the NFL again, then you must believe he's going to fail at UM. I have no illusions he's here for the long run if (when) he's successful.
That's like saying his wife won't leave the West Coast. Shit, he was teaching/singing 'The Victors' with kids in Peru while he was still coach of the 49ers.
His style of coaching is made for college and he'll never be as adored anywhere else as he is here.

With his comment, Staudt's being as fair and self-aware as you could ever expect any rival to be:
"...let it all go in one ear and out the other so as not to display the usual insecure feelings from Michigan’s opponents"
That sums up so much right there. Pretty insightful, if you ask me.
I can't wait to see him play this fall!

Please Tim, second person:
"If I were a rival fan I’d let it all go in one ear and out the other so as not to display the usual insecure feelings from Michigan’s opponents."
Oh well. For reasons already thoroughly explored in this thread, in recent years Sparty has played a watered-down BIG schedule, and its record has inflated as a result. They're good but they're not as good as they believe themselves to be.
By this October 17th we'll have a much better picture of how good each team is. But as for me, if I were a betting man, I would bet that JH will restore M to football prominence and restore the usual insecure feelings in Michigan's opponents. Go Blue.
This guy was, may be still is, the sports anchor on WILX Ch.10 in Lansing (use to be Jackson). I remember watching his sportscast in the 80s and he would be slamming Michigan because he was jealous!
How in the hell do you guys come up with this "watered down Big Ten". Ohio State just won the national championship. MSU beat OSU in the Big Ten Title Game the year before when they were undefeated. MSU has won 4 straight bowl games.
