Kenny Williams Decommits From VCU Interested In Michigan
Just saw that Kenny Williams was granted a release from his national letter of intent after coaching change at VCU. 4* SG and last 5 crystal balls have him going to Michigan as of tonight. Didnt think we had another spot but I will take him!
Jaylen Brown.
UM has no change with Brown.
But....do they have a chance?

Except that Brown said flat out he's going to an Adidas school and Kentucky is a Nike school. Not saying he can't change his mind, but that news is only a few weeks old

The only time Adidas did something right.

to a teenager is like, forever.
...there's a chance?
that has Kam Chatman going to Arizona?
but you would think he would follow Smart to Texas. I'm assuming Smart would still want him.
Why would he think that?
Because he is not... Smart.

YYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!
yeah, but saying Austins is representative of TX is like saying Ann Arbor is representative of MI

Austin, Chapel Hill, Ann Arbor, Stanford/Berkley...none of those college towns are representitive of the states they're in.
Those are the types of cities Shaka Smart enjoys and the only types of schools he was ever going to leave for.

I beg to differ. California is a huge state, but there are many areas that are similar to Palo Alto and Berkeley. Yes, you've got farmers in the central valley, and a great big melting pot of everything in Los Angeles, but liberal, crunchy-granola types can be found state-wide.
runs a city state wide are you?
No.
You're missing the biggest part of each of those towns.
Ann Arbor without Michigan, Chapel Hill without UNC, Austin without UT, Berkeley without Cal and Stanford without Stanford are completely different cities.
Crunchy granola types certainly exist in those cities, but the main thing that exists in those cities...IS THE UNIVERSITY.

But it's similar to living in Berlin during the cold war. You are surrounded.
Austin isn't exactly the most "Texas" of places. It's the state capital, pretty liberal, a college town, and pretty "unique" like most college towns. Not like Smart went to Baylor in Waco or something. But agreed that I don't think he'd flip to a college he's never seen with the hope that Smart can make things happen in a few years. Granted, the B12 isn't a really strong conference right now in basketball, but that may not be factor given that he was committed to VCU.

Actually Portland borrowed that one (with permission) from Austin.
I wouldn't say the Big 12 is not really strong in basketball right now. Most talking heads had them the best conference this year and last year. There are a lot of very good programs, just didn't fair well in the tourney. I didn't think they had a final four team in the league (IMHO), but with 70% of their conference in the tourney this year. I would call them a strong basketball conference.
Austin is a great college town, but a long way from Virginia. He has probably been to Texas in AAU and that might be to far from home.
Yes, because Levert is playing for John Groce and Illinois right now.
Interesting. Very interesting.
Seems more of a PG size, not sure it fits Beilein's tendencies, but hey I'll support him fully.
Has a true shooting guard of that size thrived under coach Beilein?
Stu Douglass would probably be the closest thing. He did pretty well, obviously Williams is more talented.
He never had one that small at WVU. Not sure about previous stops.

Actually 24-7 is the only place that shows he is 6'2. Maybe that was the height when he was a sophmore or junior. I've seen him listed at 6'3 and 6'4 on other sites. I've also watched 4 videos on him and kid looks like he could probably play the point if need be. He has the ball handling skills, but seems to be a more natural scorer and a great shooter especially in catch and release situations which is probably why they project him to SG. I would love it if we signed him. Hopefully we get him.

Had not heard of him. Reminds me of James Blackmon jr, not as strong though.
One of the best shooters in the class apparently. I'd gladly take him.
Story from UM hoops this summer

Story of him committing to VCU over...uh NC? Weird. Sounds like it was because it was local.
http://www.si.com/college-basketball/2014/08/20/kenny-williams-commits-…
VCU was among the first schools to recruit Williams. He also strongly considered North Carolina, Michigan, Indiana and Georgetown.
It shouldn't be considered weird that someone would pick a school like VCU over NC, especially witha coach like Smart there at the time. The whole recruiting ranking obsession assumes every kid is going to naturally prefer the "top" program offered. That just isn't always the case.
How shocking would it be if he just wants to go somewhere he can eventually start, and go to school somewhere he likes?
LC Bird high school is about 20 minutes from VCU's campus. Proximity definitely had something to do with it.
Also, FWIW, his high school basically adapted Michigan's stuff as their own. Their school song is The Victors and their football jerseys/helmets are identical to Michigans but with light blue instead of maize. (This means nothing.)
Well now that JP Tokoto (for some reason) declared for the NBA draft, there is now a spot open for Kenny Williams at UNC. They lacked 3 point shooters last year and Williams would almost certainly fill that void. I am a UNC fan and word on the street is that UNC is still persuing Williams because it looks like Brandon Ingram is either UK or Duke bound.

Tokoto isn't hiring an agent yet, so he may be just testing the waters. With so few scholarships available, and the timing of the NBA draft, college basketball recruiting is really complicated.
I second this. I don't think we have to worry about Williams being a one and done recruit. The prospect of having a player for multiple years has value.
Tell him we're really interested then wait to see what happens in a few weeks with Levert and Brown. If neither end up here then we'll have a scholly for him.

I have a feeling Levert goes pro and either someone else transfers or austin gets a medical so we in fact have 2 open spots.
