Funchess declares for NFL Draft
Not surprising.

Where do you think he will be drafted?
December 9th, 2014 at 3:33 PM ^
Can't say I wouldn't do the same, although it surprises me he wouldn't want to at least wait to see who the next coach is.
December 9th, 2014 at 3:38 PM ^
-1 because HARBAUGH!!!!!!
December 9th, 2014 at 3:46 PM ^
Expected, but . . . . Sounds like a GRIII move to me.
I mean, Funchess' blocking could use a little more seasoning.
Not sure you can really teach catching the ball when it's easy, but that could use a little more seasoning, too.
December 9th, 2014 at 4:10 PM ^
He needed way more seasoning, IMO. We're talking:
December 9th, 2014 at 4:13 PM ^
I can't say I'm sad. Talented but lazy. Do not need that type of "leadership" on the team.
December 9th, 2014 at 4:23 PM ^
I'm surprised he went out of his way to ask Anthony Carter if he could wear the #1 jersey; seems lazy.
December 9th, 2014 at 6:31 PM ^
I must have missed something. It seems like Hoke or Braylon would be the guys authorizing the wearing of that jersey.
December 10th, 2014 at 8:50 AM ^
He asked the Kramer family if they were ok from him switching from 87 to 1.
December 10th, 2014 at 2:23 PM ^
That's true.
December 9th, 2014 at 7:08 PM ^
Hate to say it but he had no heart. If a play didn't work out just the way he wanted he'd get up and limp off the field. Just one example of the poor attitude he exhibited. He is very talented and could still become a great player if and when he matures.
December 9th, 2014 at 11:20 PM ^
Yes !!! Let's get on the internet and post about how lazy a student athlete who busted his ass 40+ hours a week for 3 years on behalf of the university and its fans is... makes perfect sense.
And I'm guessing you are judging his leadership based on what? Working with him? Serving in a foxhole together? A leadership conference?
Oh that's right -- you are just trashing one of (if not) the most talented players to come through Michigan in the last 5 years based on your gut. Maybe next time just say good luck in the draft and be done with it...
December 9th, 2014 at 4:48 PM ^
he's doing Michigan a favor by announcing now. No one will be blaming the new coach or the decision to hire him like people still do for Manningham and Arrington.
December 9th, 2014 at 3:34 PM ^
But I think he could have gone a lot higher if he had come back and put together a much better year. Obviously depending on who our coach is.
December 9th, 2014 at 4:53 PM ^
He might be wondering if somehow our passing game will get even worse next year. He'd be all potential again next year and one year less rich
December 9th, 2014 at 10:46 PM ^
December 9th, 2014 at 3:35 PM ^
hope he's going as TE
December 9th, 2014 at 3:37 PM ^
wish him the best tho! kid has no hands and marginal speed
December 9th, 2014 at 3:46 PM ^
Actually, he has very good speed. Just horrible effort and less than average acceleration/agility.
NFL body though.
December 9th, 2014 at 3:49 PM ^
NFL body yes, but i'd be very surprised if he runs under 4.7
December 9th, 2014 at 4:30 PM ^
he'll put up fairly good numbers straight line.
If he is running 4.7 plus, he's getting some bad advice or isn't paying attention. Last year, 41 guys at the combine at WR position clocked in sub 4.7s, 33 of those were sub 4.6, and 20 were 4.5 or below.
He's a long strider, so I don't think he appears fast. I suspect where he won't fair so well is in some of the quickness drills.
December 9th, 2014 at 4:59 PM ^
I'd be suprised if he ran that poorly.
He'll be a 4.55-4.65 range guy IMO.
December 9th, 2014 at 5:56 PM ^
Prepare yourself for amazement and wonder!

which is about what I expect him to run

I dont think I remember a "star player" dropping more key passes. It's been the staple of Michigan football recently, star player who didnt execute like star players

Ehh, Braylon dropped A LOT of passes. He also made a lot of awesome grabs at key moments. He had a higher percentage to catch a 30 yard fade than he did a 5 yard hitch.
December 9th, 2014 at 10:04 PM ^
He is not that slow,as you will see at the combine.Doesn't play fast, but supposedly ran a hand-timed 4.33 40 last summer.
December 10th, 2014 at 12:04 PM ^
General adjustment for hand timed 40 results is .25 to .35 seconds.
So that 4.33 is really like a laser timed 4.58-4.68.

I'd say decent hands and decent speed. He will probably be a TE in the way that Jimmy Graham is a TE. I'd say 3rd round. I'm one of the people who hasn't soured on him; I think his attitude needs a bit of a check, but with the right motivation on his behalf he can be really good.
At the end of the day, he is a 6'5" WR with good size. Not too many of those out there, regardless of development.
December 9th, 2014 at 3:53 PM ^
here's a good comparison
6'6 WR, graded round 3-4. went undrafted. granted it was a freak year for WR, but still if the only thing he has going for him is size then he's not a first round pick folks.

December 9th, 2014 at 4:03 PM ^
If people think he will be Jimmy Graham he probably will be a first rounder.
December 9th, 2014 at 4:08 PM ^
Opposing defenses seem to have neutralized Jimmy Graham so far this year. I can't imagine Funchess going higher than the third round and I think he may slip as low as the fifth. I don't fault him for going, but whoever is giving him "advice" is severely overestimating his market value.
December 9th, 2014 at 4:21 PM ^
He had three 80+ yard receiving games and three TDs in his first four games before his injury woes began. That's probably a contributing factor. Plus NO doesn't have the speed guys on the outside that used to open up the middle for him.
Funchess needs to go somewhere with good speed on the perimeter so he can cause havoc in the middle. If he played in Green Bay, he would be dominant.
December 9th, 2014 at 4:22 PM ^
I understand Graham is not having a year comparable to his most recent ones, but I just looked it up: he currently has 68 receptions and 9 Tds. That means he'll end up with 85 (or so) cataches and 11-12 TDs. That's still a big year.
Unless there is some background info we don't know about, Funchess will go in the first round. His body type and skills are what the NFL is looking for (see Ebron, Eric -- who went in RD1 last year with stats and a body type similar to Funchess).

A TE? In the NFL? Have you seen this kid's "blocking" and "assertiveness"?
December 9th, 2014 at 4:20 PM ^
Have you seen how often TEs in the NFL line up in the slot or outside?
Agree, though. His blocking on the line is non-existent.

everyone who needed WR got it last year...he's a 4th-6th rounder
December 9th, 2014 at 3:43 PM ^
Raiders, Chiefs, Panthers, Seahawks, 49ers, Titans, Jets, so many teams need good recievers
December 9th, 2014 at 3:46 PM ^
yeah well he's not a good reciever....
#81 in production this year

I agree. Once all the scouts take a deep dive into his film this year, all his 1st round projections will drop. He seems to be quite a boom or bust type prospect to me. I expect he either puts it together and is an impact player within two or three years or is out of the league within five.
December 9th, 2014 at 3:52 PM ^
Give a real prediction. You basically just said "In my opinion he will be good or he won't."
Is that your bet or a blade of grass?

I agree. I would be much more surprised to see him going in the 2nd round than to see him in the 4th round or even lower.
December 9th, 2014 at 9:38 PM ^
And if he'snot careful might not make opemimg day roster of 53,,,needed one more year.
Oh well. good luck
December 9th, 2014 at 3:41 PM ^
I'd say 5th or 6th round, tops.
