You are ignoring the part of the article that states how young this team is.  At the end of the day, when the team hits shots they win.  When they don’t they lose.  One of those first round picks had SEVEN turnovers by himself.  That is not coaching.  People scream for him to get the ball, which he should, but you have to deal with the fact that he will make mistakes.  Once he gets a team full of juniors and seniors and they see the same results, then it may be time.

Seems to me like with more PT and NIL transfers than ever, roster management, and minimizing turnover, is going to be the hardest and most critical thing for coaches to do going forward. Possibly a bigger part of success/failure than X&Os, player development, and more traditional parts of coaching.

My conjecture is that this adds a ton of randomness to the sport, particularly now as programs still are adjusting. There is less program-building the traditional way, the way Beilein and many before him took years to figure things out and change culture. A new coach can come in and have immediate success (Arizona) and have that come and go in a year (UNC). The traditional powerhouse programs aren't really doing too well this year: UCLA is a projected 1 seed, yes, but Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, UNC, MSU and Villanova currently rank from 12 to 63 in Torvik's rankings.

Half the top 10 in those rankings are non-Power 5 schools. I understand Houston, UConn, and Gonzaga are all special cases in their own ways, but it's still pretty remarkable that they, plus St. Mary's and SDSU, can put up great numbers while Michigan and the aforementioned "big" schools with all the resources aren't as good this year. I can't help but think portal and NIL have something to do with it. More than ever before, I think the top teams will fluctuate from year to year as they pop up with the right combo of players recruited through the program and through the portal, and fall when it doesn't work out, like Michigan this season.

You realize Kansas is probably going to be a #1 seed this year, if not the overall #1 seed?

I wouldn't say Villanova is traditional powerhouse. Before Nova won it in '85 they'd been to 2 Final Fours, and one of those was in the 30s when the NIT was the premier post season tourney.  After they won it in '85 they didn't make an appearance in the sweet 16 for 20 years.

This is why I've soured on college basketball the past few years.  The quality of play is getting worse as the fewer talented players bolt to the NBA /G league earlier, and others hit the transfer portal at the drop of a hat looking for more playing time.  Building a stable roster has become almost impossible to manage.  At least with CFB, the coaches can get 3 years out of a guy.  Every year is going to be a big unknown.

They were on par with every other "good" Big Ten team except Purdue in conference play. He had to reconfigure the team after Frankie/Diabate/Houstan left, then had to reconfigure again after Shannon got blocked, then had to reconfigure again after Llewellyn got hurt. From the time he finally had his main 5 figured out, they improved in my opinion. Doing that with a freshman PG is no easy task.

Kentucky has had young teams every year. With more 5 stars on each roster than we've had at Michigan in 25 years combined. They haven't made a Sweet 16 since 2019. Juwan's been to 2. I don't care what players were on the team or who recruited them, they weren't more talented than what Kentucky had. Point being, it's hard to win with a team of young guys, no matter how good they are.

I agree with your overall point, however, Kentucky is no longer the one-and-done factory they were several years ago. Looks like 4 of their top 7 players (by minutes) are seniors, plus a junior. The other two are 5-star freshmen. I'm not an expert on UK beyond what I can read in the box score, but I imagine they're having issues, as you say, with bringing together a team with a freshman and transfer as the top PG options.

Michigan is in the 300s in age/experience and in the 300s in luck. Unfortunately you need a subscription to look at experience but somehow i doubt there are many, if any, tournament teams with our combination of youth and luck. Probably not many when just looking at experience.
