Klatt on Super Bowl Late Holding Call: Bad Call

He gives several good examples of bad officiating having too much of an impact determining the outcome of big games, including the overturned UM touchdown in the CFB Semi's.

The reason why the defensive holding call on the Eagles was bad was that it was the first defensive holding call or DPI called all game.  The strike zone had been set.  That wasn't the first tug on a receiver's jersey all game.  Be consistent.

It's just not that complicated.

Referees have a mili-second to make a decision about an infraction that itself takes a mili-second in a play going at full speed 20 yards away from them ... without slow motion or instant replay. It's really difficult, and sometimes they make mistakes. People calling them incompetent and suggesting that there is some source of "better" referees to choose from are kidding themselves.

It's like being outraged when Rafal Nadal hits a shot long. Why can't ge be more consistent! All we need him to do is be consistent! A poll of 30 coaches says that consistency is really important! Yeah, but ... getting every single shot right, factoring in everything going on at the time, at full speed, with no opportunity to review your choices before it's too late ... is freaking hard.

The DB actually held him 3 times during the process of the play. The WR would have likely been in catching distance of the pass if not for those holds. I really don't have a problem with the call.

What people should be talking about is the overturned KC defensive TD. That sure looked like a catch. A rule that makes it not a catch needs to be corrected.
