Meta: Autoplay ads for Realtor.com
This week, I started to get autoplay video ads for Realtor.com that start every time I open a thread. Sometimes there are two playing simultaneously. Sometimes I can't even find them to stop them. I don't mind ads that subsidize the free content, but I really don't like the autoplay videos.
The ads here are starting to resemble The Daily Mail in their obtrusiveness. It's a fight just to read content anymore.
If I run ad-blocker I shut down their revenue stream I generate being an obsessive site visitor but if I don't it's not a very pleasant user experience anymore.
There's GOT to be a middle ground.
There is. It's called beveled guilt.
That doesn't get you an ad-free site here.
Ad blocker + beveled guilt, so they still get money while you have ad blocker on.
Over a year ago I ran the Fair Adblocker extension. Has worked great, only problem I have has was M Live. Never had a problem with the Daily Mail.
We have to play hurt sometimes. If you love M content, it's worth the sacrifice. Any good deals on Realtor.com?
I hear if you buy a $1 million property, the ads stop.
Another way to stifle the ads is to make a $1 million or more contribution to MGoBlog in Bitcoin.
According to my realtor, it's never been a better time to buy. Also sell. I don't entirely understand how that works but I suspect that it is about her commission.
Looking for a house?
I am getting ads for Hebrew energy bars,
L'chaim!
That sounds like a set-up for a Mel Brooks' joke.
Safari with ad block are your best friends on this site.
I have a home to sell you. In this market, I think it's a fair price...
I see you bought Tom Izzo's summer place.
I mean, basically. I bought my house in 2004 for $100,000 and it is roughly that size. Just around the corner, a similar home (the same model, just a mirror image - you know, 1960s subdivision hell style) is currently on the market for just north of $200,000.
Not autoplay, but every once and a while I'll get ads in the middle of posts. This has happened in both OPs and replies, not just on the board but in front page content too...
We tracked those down and they should be stopping soon.
We are not running any autoplay ads. I've notified our providers but usually what this means is somebody managed to slip past the defenses set up by our ad networks.
The Maginot Line failed again!
I don't see any ads from my laptop. I use Chrome on a Macbook. If there's an ad blocker I never downloaded it. What am I missing?
Nothing important. Just one more thing to complain about.
Worse yet, when that realtor.com ad starts, it often repeats at least a few times, sometimes indefinitely.
Just now, it ran back to back four times, then showed a Bernstein advantage ad for a minute, then went back to those damn talking cacti!
