All hail the Jimmy Kimmel Bowl!
The future is ripe with celebrity bowl possibilities! I'll refrain from my recommendations.
Mountain West #1 vs. PAC-12 #5.
Will be played December 18th.
You mean against PAC-12 #15, correct?
If this indeed is not satire, then I don't see the problem with expanding the playoffs and getting rid of the majority of these bowls. Why? Because they've become a joke. I still think you can integrate the traditional, higher echelon bowls into the expanded playoffs.
McMurphy reported that 4-10 bowls will be eliminated and I hope the Motor City Bowl isn't one of them. I like going to that one every year regardless of who plays.
Your Mayo Bowls and Kimmel bowls? Piss on em.
How is this worse than the other 500 dumb brand names bowls we've had?
There's nothing different. At all. "They're becoming a joke." Is laughable. And the idea that the alternative is to expand the playoff further in response? Is, well, less than thought out. I do like the other reply where we should get rid of the minor bowls that he doesn't personally attend himself. Simple argument. Easy to get behind.
Here's some actual bowl names, when it apparently wasn't a joke.
Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl
Bitcoin St. Petersburg Bowl
Beef O'Brady's Bowl
Franklin American Mortgage Company Music City Bowl
GoDaddy Bowl
Duck Commander Independence Bowl
Diamond Walnut San Francisco Bowl
I miss the Grandaddy of 'Em All, the Poulan Weed Eater Bowl.
I prefer a good Soo City Gasparilla.
It isn't worse. It's actually better because at least it's funny in a stupid kind of way.
At this point, anything “traditional” can piss off.
Let’s just start over.
They've "become" a joke?
You miss the dignity of the Poulan Weed-Eater Independence Bowl?
Or do you miss the Meineke Car Care Bowl -- now with the much more traditional, meaningful name of Duke's Mayo Bowl?
I can't remember many galleryfurniture.com Bowls, but I still have the armoire I purchased from there over a decade ago -- I got a great deal for a quality product.
Not to mention the more important fact that the traditional, "classy" bowls like the Orange, Fiesta, etc are filled with overpaid cronies who funnel millions of dollars to their friends & families as they do "non-profit" work.
All the bowls are ridiculous and adding a comedian's name to one is recognizing that reality, not sullying it.
it may be the best joke kimmel has had in years
Or ever
Fun Fact: Jimmy Kimmel attended both UNLV (MWC) and Arizona State. The bowl game could theoretically feature a matchup between both his alma maters (almas mater? no? alrighty then, moving on...) while it is named for him. That would be kind of awesome.
EDIT: I don't really care about comedians/entertainers/celebrities and their political leanings or causes (or lives in general, for that matter). . He has some funny bits and that's all I know about that.
Almae Matres
I think the plural of mater is just mater. So it'd be almae mater. Source: took 4 years of Latin in high school (Mr. Rossi was the shit) but haven't touched it in 19 years.
14200 Breakfast Dr?
Mater is 3rd declension feminine noun(nominative). The plural nominative ending for 3rd dec. fem. is -es.
ETA: The adjective and noun need the same endings to make it clear they go together. I'm 99% sure I'm correct, but could be wrong (4 years of latin, 4th year at University, but that was also a long while ago.)
3rd declension plural matres is confirmed by my Bantam Latin & English Dictionary.
First time in history the sentences "The plural nominative ending for 3rd dec. fem. is -es." and "3rd declension plural matres is confirmed by my Bantam Latin & English Dictionary" have ever been uttered on a sports blog.
Alba Michigan
Well, he's come a long way since "The Man Show."
I wonder what the Man Show Boy is up to these days....
And Karl Malone.
Ouch....forgot about that one
Yeah, he used to be funny. I don't know what happened. The same kind of lame comedian as Jimmy Fallon. Can we not get comedians like Bill Burr to replace these guys?
Sorry for your downvotes. +1 from me in our collective unpopular opinion
The motto for late night TV, like most everything in programming is to have the least-offensive programming, and marginally appealing to everyone, while also making your show able to be segmented into 5 minute YouTube clips.
Doesnt matter, though. Late night TV dies next week for me when Conan leaves the format and moves to HBO.
Conan. The exception that proves the rule.
The problem is the good comedians don’t want the job, and are good at comedy because that’s all they do.
The licensing aspect is interesting here. Bowl games normally sell licensing rights to brands which pay millions for the exposure. In this case you have a brand new bowl game that needs exposure and they would likely be paying Kimmel. I bet most stars turned them down.
Will his personal "Lex Luthor" a/k/a Matt Damon attend?
Man, fuck Matt Damon.
I'd rather Kimmel would have named it the Guillermo Bowl.
He's funnier than Kimmel.
It's a low bar.
Another +1
And to you as well, good sir.
Or failing that, the Jimmy Kim-Bowl is just hanging out, waiting for a call.
Maybe I'm taking this too seriously, but I find this to be a whole lot of hubris on Kimmel's part. I find it obnoxious that he is a part of this.
For various players, the 2021 Los Angeles Bowl will be the last college football and last competitive football game they play in their lives. All those players will have worked hard to get there. The "capping moment" on their football career will be some game named after some celebrity with an ego issue.
Yeah, I know about all the corporate sponsored games, but this strikes me as much dumber.
Now get off my lawn.
*shrugs*
Would you feel better if it was named after orange juice or a fast-casual restaurant?
The celebrity with an alleged ego issue is so much worse than the corporation with said ego issue?!
How is Jimmy Kimmel worse than Meineke Car or Nokia plastering their name on one of the oldest bowls for 15 years?
This seems like a forced, made up rant, honestly.
How is he worse? Hmmm....

But yeah, on a more 'thoughtful' response note, I think you are probably taking this a little too seriously. For starters, whether its the Poulan Weed Eater Independence Bowl or the galleryfurniture.com Bowl or the San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl (all real bowls) nobody cares. I guarantee you the 'what about the children' moment you're having, they're not having. They care about the game they're playing in, the swag bag, a week's paid vacation during the holidays, and for a small few, their upcoming pro-prospects.
Why do this? It's not the reductive 'some celebrity with an ego issue' you're portending. What is the purpose of naming rights to any building or bowl, etc.? Promotion. So, already, the Jimmy Kimmel Show wins. They win a day's worth of sports conversation about a minor December bowl in June, and probably a few days in the leadup in December. They win probably 10x the amount of conversation about this bowl that would have ever happened if it were the Three Musketeers Bar Bowl or whatever.
It's not dumb. And they already won. Whether or not people like it, or Jimmy Kimmel and/or his show, now that's a different conversation.
My suspicion (and I don't know if this is true for you or not, but based on the 'ego' shot I'm guessing so) there's probably a direct correlation to the people who really don't like this, to the people who really don't like Jimmy Kimmel.
Fair enough. That is the media world, ---- frequently promoting an event in the future, rarely acknowledging the here and present moment.
ABC's broadcast of the 2021 Los Angeles Bowl will be what it is:
1. A 15-minute in-booth interview of Kimmel during the 2nd quarter, with Rece & Kirk laughing it up with Jimmy.
2. They'll then spend most of the 3rd quarter previewing the upcoming CFB semifinal games.
3. The 4th quarter will be urging viewers to switch to ESPN SportsCenter post-game, where they'll also have analysis of that day's NFL games.
4. They'll stop only occasionally to acknowledge the game in front of them.
I mean, again, I think you're falling a little off the deep end with this.. but sure, you're not wrong.
You just described every sports broadcast on every channel for the last 35 years I've been old enough to watch sports. This is how the sausage is made. You're also going to have to sit through a disproportionate amount of commercials as well. I hope I'm not spoiling anything for you with that tidbit.
As for the game in front of them, they are going to spend 4 hours broadcasting a game that will feature the 5th best team from the 12-team Pac 12 conference facing off against the first best team from the Mountain West Conference. It's an early December no-consequence Bowl Game. The Jimmy Kimmel Show/Jimmy Kimmel bought a sponsorship. Eat a sandwich, hang out if the matchup is interesting, gamble on it if you want some stakes... otherwise, what else are we really expecting here?
I think the best we can hope for is that the team's don't play some obnoxious techno song from the early aughts and keep yelling at each other what team they root for, as if anyone forgot the 300 times they yelled "We are"? Am I right? :)
Yes, but if you're watching a game, and Penn State fans are singing some obnoxious techno song all game long ......... at least all of that noise has something to do with the game itself.
As I said before ---- I acknowledge I'm acting like a 30-years-older-than-I-actually-am "get off my lawn" guy here.
Am I the only one who saw this thread and thought it must be a new menu item at Chipotle?
"I'd like a Jimmy Kimmel bowl please with chicken and extra black beans"
The Guillermo sauce is an extra buck -- and so not worth it.
I’m all for more December college football. This will likely beat most of my other viewing options on a Saturday night.
