Coach Ryan Osborn takes a shot at State
Coach Oz took a shot at State over having no players drafted:
Ryan Osborn is an analyst, and DEs/OLBs coach. He was hired as analyst, but does coach on field. Shaun Nua is coaching only DTs.
According to redshirt junior defensive end Taylor Upshaw, his position group is working more with Osborn than with Nua at this juncture.
"The reality is Nua is more like a D-tackles coach right now,” Upshaw said. “Coach Osborn is really our main guy. But I’m happy (Nua) is back and I’m happy with the defensive coordinator and my coach – the younger guy. They understand what it’s like being in the position we’re in. It’s a blessing.”
With a switch to a more multiple front, that means that defensive ends aren’t necessarily going to be in the same spot as they had been under former defensive coordinator Don Brown, who had deployed a base 4-3 (or 4-2-5, depending on how you look at the VIPER position). With the expectation that the 3-4 will be the primary base defense, that means one of the defensive end positions would become more of a stand-up position, which appears to be the case.
Upshaw says that he’s among those who are standing up most of the time, as he highlights his role and those who are also working in the position group under new defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald.
“The people we have in that room: Aidan, myself, David Ojabo, Jaylen Harrell, Braiden McGregor, Noah Knight and – I think I got all of them. Those are the guys in our room, including myself. We call ourselves ‘The Reapers,'” Upshaw said. “This is a really important defense. The position we play allows us to make a lot of plays. I think it’s gonna come down to a lot of games. We’re gonna have to affect the game a lot.”
I like the saltiness in general, but he's just setting himself up for a lot of replies that say "27-24."
Agreed - be salty, hate your rivals, bring some passion back to the program. The holier than thou part of this fanbase is tiresome. Put your money where your mouth is and beat these assholes.
You act like nobody has been saying things before the MSU or OSU games in previous years. Does the Revenge Tour ring a bell? How about when asked if he guaranteed a win against OSU in 2018 Higdon said "Yep, I do"? Or how about Don Brown when asked about OSU in the offseason of 2019 saying they "better watch out"?
Michigan football is great at talking shit that they can't back up.
You really should stop being a fan of Michigan football. You obviously don’t like following them
If they played and acted like the basketball team then I would.
Lol, sure you would
The general population opinion of Michigan is usually that we believe we are and will always be better than you in life but not on the football field because reasons
I'm generally all for taking warranted shots at rivals; however, it seems Coach Osborn fails to grasp the absurdity of mocking a team for being so devoid of talent that not one player gets drafted when that team beat your team's ass on your field. This removes any element of schadenfreude, at least for me.
Am I missing something about the rules? I though a team could have 10 assistant coaches. Yet here is Osborn, an analyst, doing on the field coaching.
Also, given we lost to a talent bereft State a little humility seems in order.
Yeah - after we introspected our own belly buttons about what analysts do during stretchgate, while all the other big programs remained totally silent and hoped to hell the NCAA said analysts can’t interact with players - we didn’t allow analyst interaction for a few years, and then quietly went back to doing exactly what Bama and OSU do with analysts on field.
It’s apparently ok / above board so far as brown bags aren’t involved.
Not only that, but the question becomes, if your athletes are so superior, why did you lose? Bad coaching?
That's the short, correct explanation for Michigan's football struggles. We recruit well. Then everything goes downhill.
/end thread
I assume he actually does hate to see the fact that a team that beat your ass brings back all of its players. It is an "Oh shit, we have to play all of those guys again" equivalent. No other explanation makes sense.
Have you heard of the transfer portal? MSU does not “bring back all of it’s players” so not sure that’s what he was going for.
I don't disagree with your statement, but you took my comment too literally. It was a roundabout way of saying STFU until you prove something on the field.
All he did was sarcastically express pleasure in a rival’s streak coming to an end. NBD in my opinion.
Say less. Do more.
Beat State. Beat Wisconsin. Beat Penn St. Upset Ohio St.
Beat Western.
Beat anyone.
Beat enough teams for a bowl game.
That's it. That's my only hopes for this season. Get to a bowl game at least. We need the extra practice.
Do less. Say More. - Michigan football going on 2 decades.
Are you gonna bark all day, little doggy, or are you gonna bite?
- Mr. Pink sounds like Mr. Pussy. How ‘bout if I’m Mr. Purple? That sounds good to me I’ll be Mr. Purple.
You're not Mr. Purple. Some guy on some other job is Mr. Purple. You're Mr. Pink!
If I was running the program he would’ve no longer been on my staff within 2 hours of that going up. Michigan went 2-4 - why is anyone running their mouth?
Yup, and it kinda goes unspoken but we should have lost to Rutgers. Props to the guys for gutting out that win, but I don't want to hear any shit talk from this team or coaches.
Laughing at MSU for their 80 year streak ending is running your mouth? No one really needs a reason to laugh at Sparty, and it is always warranted.
Honest question - what gives our current staff members the higher ground to pop off about any other contemporary program in the country right now? Did Beilein and his staff feel the need to do this year after year after year?
I don't disagree with the shut up and win sentiment but in the age of social media and the fact that young players enjoy this type of communication, it might be perceived as an effort toward getting a greater edge in recruiting. In state kids are told they can get the the league if they go to this school or that. This is one less arrow in the MSU quiver. Beating them is a better method but...But, yeah, it smells bad after losing last year. Now was the opportunity.
They had an 80 year streak, which is far longer than almost everyone else....so the arrow is probably still in the quiver (whatever that means).
It is an idiom: An arrow in the quiver is a strategy or option that could be used to achieve your objective.
Well, Michigan still has that streak, as does two other schools, total. So, it really loses its muster with, Hey we will get you to the League, we have like a two year streak of doing so.
Pointing out that they had an 80 year draft streak takes a bit of wind out of the sails, not to mention that their draftless team whipped our butts.
Please stop with the "whipped our butts" talk. We narrowly lost to a bad team. We also narrowly outgained them in yardage, but had a DC that had no answer for their Rex-Grossman-like approach to the game, and we had a QB that couldn't threaten anything downfield. The DC got fired and the QB has moved on and seems to have been replaced by more capable QBs. And MSU has become the poster child for the portal. We don't know much about either team going into this year, but neither will probably be great.
The only reason that last season was seen as a huge upset was that nobody knew that Minnesota would be so bad, or that Rutgers would show flashes of competence. It was a stupid year, with a stupid plan by the B1G. Two bad teams played a bad football game, and MSU's arm punts won the day. It was not a whipping, other than for Vegas, which had no clue what teams were any good with no data points going into B1G competition.
You are so desperate for an argument you used total yardage? If you and I race from point A to B and I win by a couple steps do you brag that you actually are better for ignoring defined rules of how to win a contest and instead running from A to C then to B?
Quick--how many total yards did Bama have last season? Who gives a crap, they have a shiny trophy
Ryan Osborn wasn't even on staff when Michigan went 2-4 and lost to MSU. You want to fire the guy because he showed up in January and immediately brought some saltiness to the rivaly with MSU?
Actually that sounds a lot like some "leaders" that I know.
While it certainly wasn't the wittiest or most original thing to say, never shirk a small jab at a rival, even if at the moment you are currently playing a bit below your desired station in college football. Yes, yes, "say it on the field", "win the games" and all the usual self-flagellation will abound in this thread, and I agree that ultimately, that's where you make your statement, but at least let them know that, even if a bit down, you certainly aren't broken. If my grandparents could make it through the Blitz poking fun at the Germans the whole time, we can make it through this
"If my grandparents could make it through the Blitz poking fun at the Germans the whole time, we can make it through this"
Agreed. After last season, in particular after the aerial bombing that we sustained at the hands of the pathetically talentless and deservedly-mocked MSU, this should be the symbol of Michigan football:
They beat us last year. How is that not broken?
Typical off-season, smack talking a rival. Next will be the hype train.
Hearing Johnny Sears is having a great spring.
I heard Speight is having secret practices with the wideouts.
And yet they beat UM last season. In a way that's sort of a compliment to their coaching and/or scheme and an indirect insult of our own. Personally I'd rather not give them any bulletin board material.
The "down in front" crowd is going to be upset coach.
Michigan football. All talk, no walk for almost two decades.
Try not talking shit about a rival who beat your ass in your own house with a decimated roster just six months ago.
It's almost like the football program doesn't understand
Shut your (virtual) mouth and win some games
If we can't make fun of MSU, I'm not sure what we've become. Have at it and back it up, etc.
