Big Ten to Nebraska: Go pound sand
Commissioner Kevin Warren addresses Scott Frost's bullshit threats with admirable bluntness.
August 11th, 2020 at 11:13 PM ^
They never should have left the Big 12. I know they felt disrespected with UT running the show, but their natural rivals, geography and culture are there. Oklahoma, Nebraska and UT was the Big 12 like UM and OSU are the B1G. I always felt it was a bad fit. Rutgers and Maryland never made sense to me either, but I get the thought process of adding East Coast viewership and recruiting.
August 11th, 2020 at 11:54 PM ^
Exactly. As clunky a fit as Rutgers seems to be, Nebraska football and Maryland basketball/lacrosse were semi-royalty in their original conferences. It's a shame that programs with that kind of history are mere afterthoughts in their new home.
August 11th, 2020 at 11:15 PM ^
Probably the right response in this situation. That said, this is the first in a long line of problems this decision will bring to B1G football programs. If the Big 12, ACC and SEC all play and it goes relatively smoothly for those schools they're going to shove it up our ass in recruiting.
August 11th, 2020 at 11:19 PM ^
The memes will be glorious.
August 11th, 2020 at 11:21 PM ^
Would we be coked up urban? Or the naked guy in the background in these memes?
August 11th, 2020 at 11:20 PM ^
They're not going to play. And even if they do, they won't finish.
August 11th, 2020 at 11:21 PM ^
Doesn't this go both ways? Like if it goes poorly and many players and coaches get unnecessarily sick, the big ten and pac 12 could easily say, we care about your safety and healthy and don't want to exploit you for money
August 11th, 2020 at 11:27 PM ^
Yes. Precisely. There's virtually no way to play football -- contact sport, tons of players, no bubble --during a pandemic without outbreaks. It's the exact OPPOSITE of what you're supposed to do.
August 11th, 2020 at 11:42 PM ^
Or we may read about a lot of Michigan football players getting COVID because they are not playing football and are all at house parties watching SEC/ACC/Big 12 football.
August 12th, 2020 at 9:19 AM ^
I think it's even more than that. If a staffer, coach, or god forbid a player dies from this, I don't know how you can't spend the next decade excoriating those schools on the recruiting trail. It's not even negative recruiting, it would just be factual.
It's really hard to reconcile dead teenagers with "caring about the kids," particularly when this is all being played out in the public eye.
August 11th, 2020 at 11:27 PM ^
Maryland is a good fit academically, geographically, and in almost every other sport but football. Agree on Rutgers. Never got the Maryland hate.
August 11th, 2020 at 11:45 PM ^
Only because of Penn State.
August 11th, 2020 at 11:25 PM ^
Good for the new commish!
Warren has some moxie; I like the way he didn't hesitate to stand up to Nebraska and Frost.
Go ahead and call his bluff, Nebraska. If you do...bye, Felicia!
August 12th, 2020 at 12:02 AM ^
Bend the knee, NEB.
August 11th, 2020 at 11:26 PM ^
Hey scott and mama frost....
August 11th, 2020 at 11:36 PM ^
The big 12 is still planning to go on with their season. They will have 9 conference games plus one out of conference game. Depending on infection rates they may delay the season by 2 weeks. KSU said they will allow 30 to 40 percent fans in the stadium to watch the games. May be I'll have to go to a KSU game since my wife is a KSU fan and alum.
August 12th, 2020 at 9:14 AM ^
Pics or it never happened
August 11th, 2020 at 11:48 PM ^
I have neither problem with Nebraska trying to play without the BIG, nor do I have a problem with the BIG telling them to kicks rocks.
My unfounded take is Warren address frosts point through the media as a public warning to Nebraska, as they may have been difficult and non cooperative during these talks.
August 11th, 2020 at 11:49 PM ^
Well Scott’s claim to be #1 back in 1997 was true.
When it comes to being a dumb dumb, he is #1!
9-15...Shutey Upey Scotty!
August 11th, 2020 at 11:52 PM ^
Good for them. If Nebraska wants to play football and have students on campus it makes a lot more sense than having students on campus but no football. They never belonged in the B10 but here they are making a claim that one can't refute unless they say no in-person classes.
August 12th, 2020 at 12:16 AM ^
You do know what a school is, right? Believe it or not, plenty of colleges and universities don't have football at all, shocking I know
August 12th, 2020 at 8:04 AM ^
Unfortunately you have about 10,000 other users to explain this to
August 12th, 2020 at 12:20 AM ^
I never get the comparing of allowing in-person classes on a college campus vs. playing football. Classes are in an environment where everything can be distanced, sanitized and controlled. Football games are 3+ hours of yelling, sweating, hitting, pushing, heavy-breathing and constant contact.
WTF does one have to do with the other? Now if you said it's not safe enough to have students back on campus, then inherently I would assume it's not safe enough to play football. It doesn't work the other way around.
August 12th, 2020 at 2:21 AM ^
Because college kids spend all their time in classrooms?
August 12th, 2020 at 9:26 AM ^
Exactly. Plus, let's all remember that educating students is the actual purpose of a university. Sports are extracurricular. It makes sense that the administration would be willing to take on a little more risk to educate their students while having social distancing and mask requirements than they would to allow players to play a game (seriously people, it's a game) while breathing into each others faces and tackling each other for 3 hours.
August 13th, 2020 at 12:21 AM ^
3+ hours of yelling, sweating, hitting, pushing, heavy-breathing and constant contact
Wifey and I can't go 3+ hours anymore like that
August 12th, 2020 at 12:17 AM ^
I haven't developed a hatred of Nebraska yet, just Frost, He isn't even that high on the list. They seem irrelevant to me. When they joined I thought it was a good add to add another powerhouse.
August 12th, 2020 at 8:05 AM ^
And then you researched the definition of powerhouse and realized you were wrong?
August 12th, 2020 at 12:24 AM ^
Nebraska in another 10 years will turn into another Minnesota. The 90's glory days are never coming back. To throw away the security of the B1G for 1 season of football would be shortsighted. Going back to being Texas' b*tch in the B12 is not going to be a pleasant long term experience for them.
August 12th, 2020 at 1:00 AM ^
Valid point but Minnesota does not like the analogy.
August 12th, 2020 at 8:07 AM ^
Sustaining that kind of success is necessary for dispelling the narrative suggested
August 12th, 2020 at 10:52 PM ^
Depends on your definition of sustaining. The Gophers have generally been the better team for the last 5 or 6 years now while Nebraska has been highly overated.
August 12th, 2020 at 12:28 AM ^
I’m curious what the Big Ten would do to Michigan or Ohio state if they decided to go play football. My guess is not a whole lot and definitely not kick them out. The big ten could say that Michigan needs them for all that revenue, but Michigan could say the same thing to them.
August 12th, 2020 at 8:51 AM ^
OSU and Michigan are the B1G. The thought to change that would never crossed those two institutions' mind.
People thinking this is going to hurt the B1G long term are hopefully ignorant. The B1G will continue to own the large Midwest/Northern TV market when they continue to playing sports.
August 12th, 2020 at 1:46 PM ^
I'm talking about a hypothetical situation where Michigan does what it wants and says fuck you to the B1G. My comment isn't the first time on this board that someone has asked about Michigan flexing it's muscles on the conference. I'm just curious what people think the conference could actually do to Michigan or Ohio State while still remaining a major player in the college sports industry? Kick them out and is Illinois going to step up and say "don't worry guys, we've got this".
August 12th, 2020 at 12:49 AM ^
Warren's confidence and firmness here suggest he has institutions such as Michigan, Ohio State, and Wisconsin on his side--the big dogs of the conference. If the Huskers want a cut of a significantly dinkier conference like the Big 12, happy trails.
August 12th, 2020 at 1:04 AM ^
Good. Let them play football and I hope we kick them out. They were a poor fit culturally and academically.
Who do we get to take their place? (that isn't ND)
A lot of ACC schools feel like a better fit
- VaTech (my #1), UVA, Syracuse, Pitt, NCST, UNC or Duke (both not likely), GaTech (getting too far south)
August 12th, 2020 at 7:33 AM ^
Here’s a better idea: which team do with pair with them and kick out so we have an even number? I am guessing there wouldn’t be much debate about that.
August 12th, 2020 at 8:08 AM ^
OSU? What do I win?
August 12th, 2020 at 1:05 AM ^
The B12 ran Nebraska, Tamu, and others away because of Texas. LMFAO
August 12th, 2020 at 1:33 AM ^
Good for Warren. Pretty funny, made me smile.
August 12th, 2020 at 3:38 AM ^
Warren is a pompous puppet.
August 12th, 2020 at 8:55 AM ^
Yes he is. He's a conference commissioner. A commissioner that works for a powerful conglomerate. Pompous puppet is a prime requisite for the job.
August 12th, 2020 at 7:27 AM ^
Never forget Dantini lost to Scott Frost.
August 12th, 2020 at 7:31 AM ^
If you want to be part of a league, and the league makes a decision, you live with it even if you don’t like it. If you can’t do that, just get pick up your footballs and leave and join another league more to your liking.
August 12th, 2020 at 8:09 AM ^
Or strap on your golden dome and head off to worship your lord. But yes, probably more likely to join a conference
August 12th, 2020 at 7:37 AM ^
If they want to play......let them play.
August 12th, 2020 at 7:51 AM ^
Hated Frost then - but don't now. He was sticking up for his team. 97 Mich v Neb would have been an epic matchup. Sir Charles would have took the game winner to the house from Frost also...
Fuck the B10. They always fuck Mich over anyway. From the 2016 Osu fan boi ref deal - to the scheduling.
August 12th, 2020 at 8:20 AM ^
I believe this is the end of the NCAA....and the beginning of more realignment with a new Organization of the P5 conferences once its safe to play sports again which apparently wont be any time soon...
August 12th, 2020 at 8:22 AM ^
I might be alone in this perhaps, but I've been a fan of making Nebraska pound sand since they arrived in the conference. As I have mentioned in another thread, I do not understand why they are here other than perhaps the money. Well, the money MOST years....
