Simpson drives into street pole, whistled for a charge
Now we know.
ANN ARBOR, MI - Zavier Simpson drove a vehicle into a street pole while driving hours after after Michigan’s loss to Illinois last month, police said.
Officers discovered the senior point guard outside of a vehicle that made contact with a pole on the corner of Hill Street and South Forest Avenue at 3:03 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26, Ann Arbor police said.
Officers asked Simpson if he was the driver, and he at first denied it, police said. He later owned up to the crash after further investigation, police said.

It's a good thing Simpson wasn't standing next to the street pole instead while another driver hit it, because a Big Ten ref would've popped up from behind the bushes and called a blocking foul.

This made me laugh.
February 6th, 2020 at 1:27 PM ^
Yeah, because this dude was dead sober at 3 am hitting a pole and telling the cops he wasn't the driver at first. And the police decline to comment on impaired driving. They gave him no preferential treatment at all (eye roll).
Tons of kids are out driving around at 3 am sober and would immediately deny they were the driver right?

I heard he was headed to the library.
February 6th, 2020 at 1:54 PM ^
I heard he was looking for the little point guards room.

The irony is quite strong here, thinking if it were EL or Columbus that Zavier would have had less of a punishment.

Michigan thinking!
* Simpson hits a pole at 3:00 am, obviously impaired.
* He lies to the officer about the accident.
* The police cover it up and refused to say if he was impaired, which means they knew he was drunk and didn't test him and gave him a ride home and cleaned the mess.
* What do you do? Divert onto Ohio State and MSU, which is basically how this entire board works.
All we need now are the comments about what it means to be a Michigan man!

Apologists will praise Howard for being a disciplinarian. This is very sketchy and far from the whole story.

Hope you enjoyed paying $5 for your 90 minutes of lame ass trolling.
February 6th, 2020 at 5:44 PM ^
Why do you think I'm trolling? A different viewpoint does not equal trolling.
February 6th, 2020 at 6:53 PM ^
He wasn't replying to you.
February 7th, 2020 at 1:47 PM ^
I love idiots who think simply pointing out a different point of view, or in this case, presenting the facts in the manner they don't want to see, is 'trolling'....
This is sketchy shit and this blog pounds all over everyone whenever something happens at a different school and literally ignores things Michigan. It's pathetic!

I once totaled a car on the side of the rode at 3 am. I fled the scene and rushed home. The cops came and insisted I admit I was the driver. I just kept saying I wasn’t until they got frustrated enough to leave LMAO

Gucci, you are the gift that keeps on giving.
February 6th, 2020 at 2:58 PM ^

The old Sean Miller tactic, I like it
February 6th, 2020 at 1:14 PM ^
I can't imagine the traffic ticket was the cause, but maybe a curfew thing as a team rule?
Police declined to comment on impaired driving. I would assume there'd be more consequences if that that was the case.
February 6th, 2020 at 1:32 PM ^
I think you are being a little naive.
February 6th, 2020 at 1:43 PM ^
Yeah, I mean, not trying to make a mountain out of a molehill here, but this is pretty damn sketchy. It is 3 AM, he hits a pole, makes a false statement to the police that he wasn't driving the car, and he is not even given a breath test? Issued a citation for "speeding" that was not even observed, and suspended for a violation of team rules (what rule?)
Not a great look.
February 6th, 2020 at 1:58 PM ^
It seems like small fries to me: A benign, irresponsible act.
February 6th, 2020 at 4:07 PM ^
The article says they cited him for driving too fast for conditions. I don't recall the weather on that particular night, but if there was snow/ice, they could easily make a determination on speed. Obviously not the exact mph, but at least that he was driving dangerously or recklessly given the state of the roads.
I'm not so naive to say that he wasn't under any influence, but I could also see a kid in his position, with his notoriety very much NOT want to get in trouble for any driving infraction, intoxicated or no.
February 6th, 2020 at 1:48 PM ^
It wasn't his car.

If all you former students don’t remember S. Forest and Hill is one of the worst 4 way stops on campus even on a sunny afternoon. Traffic island that makes some left turns illegal and others just cumbersome. I’m sure AAPD are called there often.

YES, i like this guy!! naive like a 5 year old. we need more of this. i did nothing wrong, this is a terrible intersection. bumped my head and forgot my name for a minute there.
February 7th, 2020 at 8:27 PM ^
You be this naive. If he wasn't impaired, the would have clearly stated it.
He was drinking and they called him a ride and intentionally test him. Jesus... You can't that dumb.
February 6th, 2020 at 1:15 PM ^
Declined to comment if alcohol was involved... uhh... I feel like if he was over the limit it would warrant much more than just 1 game.
Maybe he hit that sweet spot where he’s in between the limit and 0.00
February 6th, 2020 at 1:21 PM ^
Well, they should not have put the pole where he was driving.
February 6th, 2020 at 1:27 PM ^
Agreed, this is BS -- and also the pole hadn't established its position when he ran into it.
February 6th, 2020 at 1:34 PM ^
I dunno, I looked at the replay and the pole had been stationary for quite some time prior to the contact. It also stood straight up.
February 6th, 2020 at 1:55 PM ^
Teske to be replaced by street pole for Saturdays game.
February 6th, 2020 at 4:09 PM ^
Why the hell isn't the pole getting called for 3 seconds then???
February 6th, 2020 at 4:10 PM ^
Say what you will, but the pole was clearly in the circle.
February 6th, 2020 at 2:34 PM ^
Was a citation issued for ripping the pole’s jersey?
February 6th, 2020 at 1:30 PM ^
Must have broken curfew
February 6th, 2020 at 1:33 PM ^
You don't typically have curfew after a home game. They are young adults. night before game, yes, night after the game, no.
February 6th, 2020 at 2:36 PM ^
It’s obviously curfew bc the Secret Service tailing Sasha Obama would’ve arrested Simpson on the spot if he were truly drunk driving.

February 6th, 2020 at 1:46 PM ^
I have no sympathy for someone driving while intoxicated. I assume he was in that zone where he didn't blow legally drunk but was impaired/wasn't responding properly.
We'll probably never find out what officially happened but it was a dumb thing he did.
February 6th, 2020 at 1:48 PM ^
"False statement to police"....... So he lied to police as determined after they were forced to investigate........ I'm sure he told the truth in regards to others more specific questions asked.....
